INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-1
IDENTIFY NETWORK MATERIAL, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND CABLE
ROUTE

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Understand Network materials, tools, and Equipment and its
function
2. Plan cable route of a network

A computer network is a group of computer systems and other

computing hardware devices that are linked together through communication
channels to facilitate communication and resource-sharing among a wide
range of users. Networks are commonly categorized based on their
characteristics.

NETWORK MATERIALS

1. UTP Cable- Unshielded twisted pair (UTP)

cables are widely used in the computer and
telecommunications industry as Ethernet cables
and telephone wires.

2. RJ45- is a standard type of physical connector for

network cables. RJ45 connectors are most commonly
seen with Ethernet cables and networks.

Network Tools
1. Crimping Tool- A crimping tool is a device used to
conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one or both
of them in a way that causes them to hold each
other. The result of the tool's work is called a crimp.
A good example of crimping is the process of affixing
a connector to the end of a cable. For instance,
network cables and phone cables are created using a crimping tool (shown
below) to join the RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors to the both ends of either
phone or CAT5 cable

2. Punch down tool- A punch down tool, also called

a krone tool, is a hand tool used to connect
telecommunications and network wires to a patch
panel, punch down block, keystone module, or
surface mount box. The "punch down" part of the
name comes from punching a wire into place using
an impact action.

Network Equipment

1. Lan Cable Tester- A cable tester is a device that is

used to test the strength and connectivity of a
particular type of cable or other wired assemblies.
There are a number of different types of cable testers,
each able to test a specific type of cable or wire (some
may be able to test different types of cables or wires).
A cable tester can test whether a cable or wire is set
up properly, connected correctly, and the
communication strength between the source and
destination.

2. Router- A router is hardware device designed to receive,

analyze and move incoming packets to another network. It
may also be used to convert the packets to another network
interface, drop them, and perform other actions relating to a
network. The picture shows the Linksys BEFSR11 wireless
router and is what many home routers resemble.

4. HUB- a hub is the most basic networking device that connects multiple
computers or other network devices together. Unlike a network switch or
router, a network hub has no routing tables or intelligence on where to send
information and broadcasts all network data across each connection
5. Patch Panel- A panel that allows multiple devices to be connected and
managed in a more efficient manner. Computer networks, sound studios,
television stations, and a number of other systems use patch panels to deal
with components of their electronic systems. The picture is an example of a
Cat5 patch panel.

6. Modular Box/Connector- A modular connector is an electrical connector

that was originally designed for use in telephone wiring, but has since been
used for many other purposes. Many applications that originally used a
bulkier, more expensive connector have converted to modular connectors.
Probably the most well known applications of modular connectors are for
telephone jacks and for Ethernet jacks, both of which are nearly always
modular connectors.

INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-2
PERFORM CABLE SPLICING CONSTRUCT NETWORK CABLE

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Know the parts of Crimping Tool
2. Know how to install network cable

Ethernet cables are used to connect two or more computers together

in a wired network. While these cables are available in different lengths,
situations may arise where the Ethernet cables that you have on hand aren't
long enough to connect your computers. Should this occur, two cables can
be spliced to create a longer Ethernet cable without fear of data loss. The
splicing should only take a few minutes, after which the new cable should
carry data across the network just as easily as either of the cables it was
made from did previously.

PARTS OF CRIMPING TOOL

How to splice UTP cable in proffer way:

1. Purchase your cable. Most ethernet cable is sold on spools of varying

lengths, so you might have to measure and cut the amount you need.

2. Striping-Strip 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.1

cm) of the outer skin at the end of the
cable wire by making a shallow cut in the
skin with a utility knife. Run the knife
around the cable, and the jacket should
slide off easily. There will be 4 pairs of
twisted wires exposed, each of them a
different color or color combination

3. Arranging-Arrange the untwisted wires

in a row, placing them into the position,
running from right to left, in which they will
go into the RJ-45 connector

4. Trimming-Trim the untwisted wires to

a suitable length by holding the RJ-45
connector next to the wires. The insulation
on the cable should be just inside the
bottom of the RJ-45 connector. The wires
should be trimmed so that they line up
evenly with the top of the RJ-45 connector.

5. better to cut the untwisted wires a few

times than have to go back and start all
over again because you trimmed off too
much.

INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-3
CONSTRUCT NETWORK CABLE

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Kwon what is the used of Ethernet Cable
2. Construct Network Cable ( Straight throu cable, Cross over cable)

RJ-45 connectors are normally used in

telephone and network cables. Occasionally
they are used for serial network connections.
When the RJ-45 connectors first came into
use, they were primarily used for telephones.
The great advances in technology created a
need for another size connector and the RJ-45
was adapted to fit. Today there are 2 different
RJ-45 connector sizes available, 1 for Cat 5
cable and 1 for Cat 6 cable. The user has to
make sure they have the one suited to their job. The easiest way to tell them
apart is to compare them side by side. The Cat 6 connector is larger than the
Cat 5 connector. Below are instructions for crimping RJ-45 connectors to a
cable.

What an Ethernet Cable Looks Like

There's a picture of a few Ethernet cable
ends on this page. It resembles a phone
cable but is larger and has more wires.
Both cables share a similar shape and
plug but an Ethernet cable has eight wires
and a larger plug than the four wires
found in phone cables.
Ethernet cables of course plug into
Ethernet ports, which again, are larger than phone cable ports. An Ethernet
port on a computer is accessible through the Ethernet card on the
motherboard.
Ethernet cables come in different colors but phone cables are usually just
grey

Types of Ethernet Cables

Ethernet cables normally support one or more industry standards including
Category 5 (CAT5) and Category 6 (CAT6).
CAT 5 Cable – Ethernet and Fast Ethernet. CAT5 is rated at a speed of 100
Megabits per second.
CAT 5e Cable- Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet. CAT5e is rated
at a speed of 350 Megabits per second but may reach speeds up to a Gigabit.
CAT 6 Cable – Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet. CAT6 is rated at a
speed of a Gigabit but may reach speeds up to 10 Gigabits

RJ45- is a standard type of physical connector for

network cables. RJ45 connectors are most commonly
seen with Ethernet cables and networks.

Color coding
Install Network Cable

1. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector,

making sure that they stay aligned and each
color goes into its appropriate channel. Make
sure that each wire goes all the way to the
top of the RJ-45 connector. If you don't make
these checks, you will find that your newly
crimped RJ-45 connector is useless.

2. Use the crimping tool to crimp the RJ-45

connector to the cable by pressing the jacket
and cable into the connector so that the
wedge at the bottom of the connector is
pressed into the jacket. Recrimp the cable
once more to ensure proper connection.

3. Follow the instructions above to crimp an

RJ-45 connector to the opposite end of the
cable.

2 types of Network Cable

1. Straight thru cable/Patch Cable- A

cable used the same color coding in its two-
end ex. (T568A-T568A, T568B-T568A).
Straight cable is commonly used in different
devices like PC to HUB/Switch.

2. Crossover Cable- A cable used different

color coding in its two-end ex. (T568A-
T568B, T568B-T568A). Crossover cable is
commonly used in the same devices like PC
to PC.

INFORMATION SHEET 2.1-4
CHECK INSTALLATION WORK BASED ON 5S AND 3RS

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. know what is LAN cable tester
2. how to check LAN cable/ Ethernet cable

The 5 Steps are as follows:

 Sort: Sort out & separate that which is needed & not needed in the area.
 Straighten: Arrange items that are needed so that they are ready & easy to
use. Clearly identify locations for all items so that anyone can find them &
return them once the task is completed.
 Shine: Clean the workplace & equipment on a regular basis in order to
maintain standards & identify defects.
 Standardize: Revisit the first three of the 5S on a frequent basis and confirm
the condition of the Gemba using standard procedures.
 Sustain: Keep to the rules to maintain the standard & continue to improve
every day.

Importance of the 3 R’s-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce: Reducing the amount of waste you produce is the best way to help the
environment. For instance, buying products with minimum packaging,
borrowing things which we do not use often, starting a compost bin, saving
energy and water by turning are ways to reduce. To reduce the environment
damage caused by cars, increase use of carpooling with friends, walking, taking
the bus, or riding your bike instead of driving are the necessary steps to be taken.
Same way salvage does for the environment. It helps to reduce the waste by
sorting out articles of use.
Reuse: Instead of throwing away articles try to find various efficient ways to
reuse it. For instance, replacing few things in our day to day life like using cloth
sacks in place of plastic bags, re-useable lunch bags without creating waste.
Donating old clothes, toys and furniture to the needy and poor. Use writing paper
on both sides etc.
Recycle: The process of changing the waste and non-useable materials into
potentially useful materials. It is the key component of modern waste reduction
procedure. There are some ISO standards related to recycling such as ISO
15270:2008 for plastics waste and ISO 14001:2004 for environmental
management control of recycling practice. Recycling reduces the consumption of
raw materials and energy usage.
Lan Cable Tester
A cable tester is an electronic device used
to verify the electrical connections in a
signal cable or other wired assembly. Basic
cable testers are continuity testers that
verify the existence of a conductive path
between ends of the cable, and verify the
correct wiring of connectors on the cable.
More advanced cable testers can measure
the signal transmission properties of the
cable such as its resistance, signal
attenuation, noise and interference.

Steps in checking Lan cable/Ethernet cable

STEP 1

Turn the testing unit on.

STEP 2

Plug the ends of your RJ45-terminated cable into the tester's two
ports … it doesn't matter what order you do this in.

STEP 3

Depending on which tester you use, the test function will be

either manual or automatic. If you're using the automatic test
mode, simply push the button and let the unit do its work. If you
need to use a manual mode, simply hit the test button repeatedly to
advance through all 8 wires.
STEP 4

You'll see two separate bars of indicators, each with 8 lights.

Watch these indicator lights as the test sequence is completed,
wire-by-wire. If both the “input” and “output” indicators for each
wire are brightly lit, then you know that optimum connection has
been made. A dim light indicates poor connection, and no light at
all lets you know that connection is not being made
