CAPRISA LANGUAGE FESTIVAL 2019

RULES AND CRITERIA

General Rules:

1. The competitions are open to all pupils/students from private elementary and
secondary schools.
2. A pupil/student can join only 2 contest categories to encourage and give
chance to others to develop their talent and skills.
3. Only the first-place winners in the school level can participate in the provincial
level.
4. First place winner/s in the provincial level will represent in the regional level.
5. Champion in the previous year cannot join anymore in the same contest this
year, however he/she can join in other contests.
6. Always follow the rules and mechanics of the different contests. Failure to
observe the said rules and mechanics is a ground for disqualification.
7. The decision of the Board of Judges in all contests will be final and unappealable.
8. In all events, RANKING SYSTEM shall be used to determine the winners. In case of
a tie, the MODAL SYSTEM shall be used. After the MODAL SYSTEM has been
adopted, the judges shall declare the winner.
9. Any person who served as trainer for Language Festival contestants is strictly not
allowed to be chosen as judge.
10. Only the official school education coordinator may file written complaints noted
by the school head.

Ground Rules:

1. The audience is requested to turn off all pagers, cellular phones and other
gadgets /nuisance.
2. No applause is allowed in between the delivery. It is only allowed after the
delivery of each contestants in each event.
3. Trainers, coaches and coordinators should stay at the designated are provided
for them; such areas off limit to non-participants.
4. Only the education coordinator of the competing school is allowed to be with
the contestants at the backstage. Make-up artist/s and production assistant/s
are not allowed to be with the contestants.
5. Only the designated technical committee member is allowed to fix/arrange the
microphone before the contest proper.
6. Only the person in-charge is allowed to fix the audio before the contest starts.
7. Only the person in-charge is allowed to fix/arrange the mic and mic stand before
each performances.
I. SPELLING CONTEST (Elementary and Secondary)

1. Regional/Division Management will form a committee to prepare the spelling list to


be used for the contest.
2. For reference, Merriam Webster Dictionary (old and new edition will be used).
3. Mechanics:
3.1 All contestants will spell same set of words in writing. Before the word is read the
contestants will raise their marking pen first.
3.2 The word will be read twice by the pronouncer. After the first reading, he/she will
give the meaning of the word and use it in a sentence. Then, she will read the word
again. After the second reading, the quiz master will say “Go”. Only then, the
contestant be allowed to write the answer. Automatically, the ten-second time limit
will begin with the word “Go” by the pronouncer.
3.3 After the time limit, the bell rings. The contestant should stop writing and show
their strips of paper with their answer to the judges.
3.4 Judges declare the correct answer.
3.5 Point system shall be used. Scores will be reflected in the tally board.
3.6 There will be four (4) rounds: easy, average, difficult, and clincher. Note: Clincher
round will take place only if there is a tie.
3.7 Five (5) words will be spelled for each round, except in the clincher round. There
will be as many words to be spelled until the tie is broken.
3.8 Points are assigned for each category.
Easy 1 point
Average 2 points
Difficult 3 points
Clincher 5 points
3.9 A contestant who will get the highest points will be declared the winner.
4. American pronunciation will be used but American or British spelling will be
accepted.
5. Only the education coordinator can file protest immediately after the declaration of
the correct spelling by the judges.

II. ON-THE-SPOT POEM WRITING CONTEST (Elementary and Secondary)

1. The topic will be announced on the spot, a few minutes before the contest starts.
2. Poem can be free-verse style.
3. The participant should provide a title for his/her work.
4. The time-limit of one (1) hour is given.
5. Criteria:
a. Adherence to the Elements of Poetry 50%
(Imagery, Symbolism and Structure)
b. Content/Message 30%
c. Originality 20%

III. ON-THE-SPOT ESSAY WRITING CONTEST (Elementary and Secondary)

1. The topic will be announced on the spot, a few minutes before the contest starts.
2. The essay must be written in English, must not be less than two hundred (200)
words and not to exceed four hundred (400) words.
3. The participant should provide a title for his/her work.
4. The time limit of one hour (1) hour is given.
5. Criteria:

a. Content/Message (Originality) 50%


b. Command of Language) 50%

IV. NEWS WRITING, FEATURE WRITING, and EDITORIAL WRITING (Elem. & Sec.)

1. The topic shall be announced one (1) hour before the contest starts.
2. The write-up must be written in English and must not be less than three hundred
(300) words and not to exceed five hundred (500) words for Feature and Editorial
Writing and a minimum of ninety (90) words for the News Writing.
3. The participant should provide a title for feature and editorial writing, and a
headline for news writing.
4. Write-ups must adhere to the technically used in journalistic writing.
5. A time limit of one (1) hour is strictly imposed.
6. Criteria:
a. Content/Message (Originality) 30%
b. Adherence to Journalistic Writing 30%
c. Language Use 20%
d. Diction (Choice of Words) 15%
e. Overall Impact 5%

V. FILIPINO AND ENGLISH DECLAMATION (Elementary and Secondary)

1. Contest pieces must be on any topic suited for a declamation. It can be either
be in poetry or in prose.
2. 3 Stand microphones should be used.
3. Props are strictly not allowed.
4. The delivery must not exceed six (6) minutes. The timer will ring the bell once, thirty
(30) seconds before the time ends and it will ring again twice at the end of six (6)
minutes time limit. One point will be deducted from the total score for every thirty
(30) seconds exceeded.
5. Interpretation of the piece must focus on the eye and facial expressions. No other
parts of the body must touch the floor except the feet.
6. Declamation pieces which portray vulgarity and violence such as rape, terrorism,
murder, sexual harassment, incestuous relationship and other immoral and
criminal acts are strictly not allowed.
7. Criteria:
a. Interpretation 35%
b. Language Use 35%
c. Suitability of the Piece 15%
c.1 Stress and Accent 15%
c.2 Pronunciation 10%
C.3 Enunciation 10%
d. Mastery of the Piece 10%
e. Stage Presence 5%

VI. CHARACTER IMPERSONATION (Elementary and Secondary)

1. Characters MUST be taken from children’s literature like fairy tales, fables, or
biblical stories & Greek mythologies.
2. Contestants may provide background music, (it should be in the BEGINNING or
END and only for a maximum of 1 minute) costume and make-up. PROPS are not
allowed.
3. Impersonation of political figures is discouraged.
4. The time limit is from three (3) minutes to six (6) minutes. The timer will ring the bell
once, thirty (30) seconds before the time ends and it will ring again twice at the
end of six (6) minutes. One point will be deducted from the total score (from
every judge’s total score) for every thirty (30) seconds exceeded.

5. Criteria:
a. Characterization 40%
b. Language Use 40%
c. Stage Presence 10%
d. Mastery 10%

VII. ORATION (Secondary)

1. Pieces must focus on the theme.


2. The piece must be in English, original, never been published.
3. The piece must be delivered from four (4) minutes and not exceed six (6) minutes.
The timer will ring the bell once thirty (30) seconds before the time end and it will
ring again twice at the end of six (6) minutes. One (1) point will be deducted from
the total score (from every judges total score) for every thirty (30) seconds
exceeded.
4. Stand microphone should be used.
5. Criteria:
a. Content (Relevance to the Theme) 30%
b. Diction (Pronunciation/Enunciation/Intonation) 35%
c. Delivery (Gestures/Voice Projection/Modulation) 10%
d. Mastery 10%
e. Stage Presence 5%
