RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FACEBOOK AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCES OF

GRADE 12 HUMSS STUDENT S.Y 2019 2020

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social media is dominantly known as an online discourse where people tend to utilize

in fast changing of a message. Because of its ease to use, a lot of people engage themselves in

social media particularly in Facebook. The popularity of Facebook to socialize through

Facebook has grown significantly, as memberships nearly reached one billion users and more

than eight billion minutes hale been spent on Facebook daily (Barnett, 2012; Kirschner and

Karpinski, 2012).u to stay connected with friends, classmate, and old friends. It was originally

created for college students, but people of all ages all over the world have now become part of

the social network.

“According to a 2008 Kaplan study, in 10 college admissions officers routinely check

out college applicants Facebook and MySpace pages. And some thirty eight percent (38%) of

them found posts and pictures that reflected poorly on those prospective students”. A study

conducted at Ohio State University concluded that students who were Facebook user had and

GPA 5-10 points lower than Facebook users. San Miguel (2009), focused on the relationship

between times spent on Facebook in the academic performances of students. The overall

findings indicated “more time on Facebook equals slightly lower grades“. In his study, the

average Facebook user study for 1-5 hours per week, while the non-Facebook users would

study 11-15 hours per week Enriquez (2010), revealed that students who multi-task between

social networking sites and home work are likely to have twenty percent (20%) lower grades

than a students who does not have a social networking site. He believes even running in social

networking site on the background on a student’s PC while studying or doing homework

could lower a student’s grade. He believes that “The problem is that most people have

Facebook or other social networking sites, their emails and may be instant messaging

constantly running in the background while they are carrying out their tasks” Choney (2010),

in looking at the time spend on Facebook and its effect on academic performance said a user
of Facebook has an average “GPA of 3.06, while non-users have an average GPA of 3.82”

Furthermore, a study conducted by Karpinski and Duberstein (2009),of Ohio Dominican

university on college students who use social network have significantly lower grade point

(GPAs), than those who do not. They also mentioned that among various unique distractions

of every single generation, Facebook remains a major distraction of current generation.

According to Khan (2009), Facebook users often time experience poor performance

academically. Similarly, Englander et al, (2010), posit than social media is negatively

associated with academic performance of student and is a lot more momentous than its

advantages. Internet addiction consequently gave rise to internet usage within the last couple

decades. Nalwa and Anand (2008), recommendation that addicted users prefer using internet

setting back their personal and responsibilities which ultimately leads to poor academic

performances.

Higher education institutions have great fear that student academic performance might

affect adversely because students are paying more attention towards social network sites. This

study examined the relationship between Facebook practices on academic performances of the

students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March 2012 to March 2013 in Jimma

University and 490 postgraduate students were participated in this research. The data were

collected using a pre-tested structured self-administrated questionnaire. The result was

analyzed in terms of descriptive statistics followed by inferential statistics. The results

indicated that there is no significant relation between usage time and frequency of login

Facebook with student GPA.
