7th Grade Honors Science Curriculum

Honors Science will promote higher level thinking and demand more application
than memorization. Students will be receiving new, consumable textbooks this
year that are aligned to NGSS, Next Generation Science Standards. Each grade
level has a spiral curriculum that incorporates all branches on science. This
curriculum relies heavily on interactive computer resources. Students are
encouraged to keep textbooks in the classroom.

Supply List:
Green Duo-tang folder
Colored checking pens
Pencils
Dry erase markers
Coloring supplies (crayons/colored pencils)
Highlighter

Also needed for classroom use:

Kleenex (one box per student would be greatly appreciated)
Disinfectant wipes (for cleaning table tops)

Grading:
We will be using a weighted grading system this year as follows:

Classwork (bell ringers, daily assignments, labs, homework): 40%

Assessments (tests, quizzes, and projects): 60%

Homework:
Homework is approximately given three times per week. Class time is often
given to begin the assignment. We do realize there are other subject areas
assigning homework, so I generally try to keep the length of assignments
reasonable (15-20 minutes on average).

Homework (late) Policy

All middle school students are expected to do all assigned homework to be
submitted for full credit on the due date specified by their instructor. Assigned
homework will be accepted up to 5 days late, with a 10% reduction for each day
late.
Absent Work:
Students will have the same number of days as they were absent to turn in
missing work from their absence. For example, if a student is absent for one day,
they will get one day to make up all work. If you know of a prolonged absence
ahead of time, you can request homework to be sent home and will be due upon
return to school. There is a designated area set up in our classrooms where
students can locate assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to find out
what work they missed while absent.

Classroom Behavior System

We will be following the classroom behavior system that is outlined in the student
handbook for discipline procedures. Respect and positive engagement is
expected at all times.

Parent Communication:
As parents, we know that staying informed of our child’s progress is essential to
their success. The following tools are put in place to help keep your child
organized and to inform you of their progress:

Agendas:
All students are required to carry their agenda book with them to all of their
classes and fill out the agenda for the day when they arrive to each class. This is
a great tool to keep students organized and parents informed. Please review this
often.

Unified Classroom:
The parent portal provides parents with the privilege of accessing the student
information records of their children through a secure internet connection. If you
have not already signed the agreement and accessed parent portal, please see
our office staff for the necessary information.

Thank you in advance for all your cooperation and support this year. Supportive,
involved parents are crucial to a student’s academic success. We are looking
forward to a wonderful year filled with growth and learning.
