REVIEW
We will review from last class. Can anyone give me some methods of
target indication mentioned in the previous class?

WHAT
In this class, I will be going over some more examples of target
indications

WHERE
This is part of your lesson for Engaging Targets

WHY
You will be require to use what you have learned here in the field both
later on this course and in your future careers for those in the Army
Element.

APPROACHES
This lesson will be conducted in 3 stages Slide 2
In stage 1 we will discuss the Clock Ray Method
In stage 2 we will discuss the Auxiliary Reference Method
In stage 3 we will discuss the Hand Span Method

CONTROL STATEMENT
No class answers, if I have a question for you, raise your hand and I will
pick you. If you have a question, feel free to put up your hand and I will
answer it to the best of my ability.
Body
Stage 1
7minutes TP-2 Auxiliary Reference Point
QTC: Does anyone know how the Reference Point Method works?

ANS: This builds upon reference point method when the target it not
directly close to the reference point.

How Auxiliary Reference Point work is by indicating a prominent object, Slide 5

then from there indicate a less obvious reference point from the prominent
object. Then finally indicate where the target is from the less prominent
reference point. The less obvious object is your Auxiliary Reference Point

As a last resort, Successive Reference Points may be used, by using

several auxiliary reference points to finally reach the target. This is not
preferred as it may get confusing.

Auxiliary Reference Point Method in sequence

-Range to reference point
-Reference prominent object
-Indicate where the target would be relative to the reference on a clock
-Description of auxiliary reference point
-Where the target is situated from the auxiliary reference point
-description of target

Example: Two Fifty, Reference House, Two O'Clock, Two Trees, Right Chalkboard
Five Mils, Tank. Example

The reason why Auxiliary and Successive Reference Points may be

required is when the target is not clearly visible near any easily
identifiable reference points. This method allows the commander to very
quickly go from one prominent objective to less obvious ones where the
target may situation close to.

QTC: Any questions?

Slide 6
7minutes TP-3 Hand Span Method
QTC: Does anyone know the Hand Span method?
ANS

The method that will probably be used most frequently for making lateral
measurements. A person's hand extended at arm's length can be used to
measure angles.
Hand Span Method in sequence
-Range to reference point
-Reference prominent object Chalkboard
-Fully extend your arm with your finger(s) or hand covering the distance Example
between the reference point and the objective
-Description of the target

Example: Three Hundred, Reference Church, Three Fingers left, Tank

QTC: Any questions?

Today we have covered the proper use of different target indication
method. It is important that you remember to keep things simple when
you chose your reference points
