Objectives
The student should obtain advanced knowledge of practical and theoretical aspects of
Probability, inferential Statistics and Numerical Analysis that will be needed in an
Engineering course.

Contents

Basic probability. Random variables and distributions. Most important distributions.

Sampling theory. Point and interval estimation. Hypothesis testing.

Error theory. The solution of non-linear equations. Polynomial equations.

Interpolation by polynomials. Equally and not equally spaced points. Inverse
interpolation.
Systems of linear equations. Iterative methods. Systems of non-linear equations.
Approximation. Curve fitting.
Numerical integration.
The solution of differential equations. Numerical integration by Taylor series. Runge-
Kutta methods.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical and practical classes with application examples. On-line tutorial, including
e-mail, chat, forums and cooperative projects, for support, motivation and on-going
accompaniment through the learning process.

Assessment
Frequency with two/three tests, practical work and/or examination.
