TOPIC 1 = WORDS, PHRASES AND SENTENCES. DISCUSS THEIR

CHARACTERISTICS

WORDS
AINIEL ASHMIERA BINTI ZABIDI
In Miera’s opinion a word is a form of combination or compilation of alphabets. It is a
smallest form of text as the morphemes are also considered as a word. A word also can be
identified as it is commonly conveyed without a space between the alphabets.
LUQMANUL HAKIM BIN ZOLCEFLI
Luqman on the other hand thinks that words are like these gears which when put together,
they can carry out a meaning. Words play a huge role in creating a sentence or heck even
with clauses or phrases they are these main things that convey the message whether when
speaking and writing because words can stand on their own. For example, box. When
someone says box or write a box, you know they are referring to something that can hold
stuff in it so to say a [box].
My response
I agree with both the aforementioned opinions. To add to what they’ve said I strongly believe
that words are our most effective means of communication. Without them we’d be reduced to
being gormless oafs who rely on pointing and grunting to relay our thoughts. This invention
was a boon for all of mankind to relish and has evolved tremendously over last 1000 years.

PHRASES
LUKE TEOH RONG GUANG
In Luke’s opinion, according to Collins Online Dictionary phrases can be defined as a short
group of words that people often use as a way of saying something. In his opinion phrases are
small units of words that will eventually merge to form clauses. He states that there are 3
main types of phrases, noun phrases, verb phrases and prepositional phrases.
My Response
I couldn’t agree more, owing to the fact that his sources are credible and trustworthy. I am of
the opinion that a phrase is unique in the sense that it is the bridge between a sentence and a
word.

NUR AISHA SHAFINAZ BINTI AHMAD SIDEK

Aishah on the other hand firmly believes that a phrase is a small group of words standing
together as a conceptual unit, typically forming a component of a clause. Phrase also means
to put into a particular form of words. A phrase can be short or long and it never includes a
subject or verb. The most vital thing that must not be looked askance upon is that a phrase
must always consist of more than one word.

My Response
I thoroughly agree with Aishah’s sentiment. First of all, a phrase is obviously more complex
than a word but less complex than a sentence. I can attest to the veracity of her definition
seeing as how her sources are quite credible.

SENTENCES
MUHAMMAD SETIAWAN NST BIN NOMAN FURWANTO
My friend Setiawan is convinced that a sentence relies on smaller units namely clauses,
phrases and words. A sentence is, in a way an all-rounder of the smaller units which are
properly constructed using grammar rules to deliver the correct and precise message to
readers that cannot be achieved by using the lesser units.

My Response
I agree with Setiawan for the most part but what he said about sentences being used to
convey a more precise message rubs me the wrong way. By utilising the right words, you’d
be able to convey your thoughts clearly with a phrase. Having said that, I must concede that
under most circumstances it is better to use sentences instead of phrases to convey your
thoughts.

NUR AISHA SHAFINAZ BINTI AHMAD SIDEK

Aishah on the other hand is labouring under the impression that a sentence is the largest
grammatically independent unit. To the best of her knowledge, there is a myriad of sentences.
A sentence also has its own rules in writing. For example, every sentence must begin with a
capital letter. Sentences are strings of two or more words to convey one's thoughts in a clearer
way.

My Response
I agree with what Aishah says about a sentence being the largest grammatical unit. This fact
is often overlooked by language learners and speakers alike. Aside from that, punctuation is
very important in constructing sentences. A single exclamation mark can alter the tone and
message of the sentence completely.

FORUM 2
Topic 2: Discuss two ways how you learn grammar rules.

Muhammad Nurdin bin Noorjamri

From Nordin’s standpoint, two ways to learn grammar is to be aware of grammar. Notice the
aspects of English grammar that are the same as or very similar to those in your language,
also the way English expresses an idea differently to how it is done in your language. For
example, English uses the present perfect to express a period of time in the present (e.g we
have talked before). In addition, read books about grammar rules and English books. When
you’re reading novel (English books), you’re taking in models of correct grammar that will
help you in your own writing or speaking. Of course, it is better if you can read with the
grammatical awareness discussed before.
ABDUL FARHAN BIN ABD RAHIM
One of the methods I personally use to learn grammar rules is by understanding the basic
structures of the language. I often expose myself to difficult parts of the language, and then
after getting the gist of it, try to imitate what I have understood intuitively. I personally do not
like memorising things, so what I would do to circumvent my dislike of memorisation is to
repeat what I have understood multiple times through writing or communicating with others.
This helps in making sure that the knowledge I have gained stays in my head, and the more I
repeat it, the less likely it is for me to forget what I have learned, and the more likely it is for
me to understand how to apply my knowledge correctly whenever possible. The key is to not
just passively observe it, but to look for or create opportunities to use the knowledge. The
saying, “practice makes perfect” rings true when learning grammar rules, or just about
anything else, for that matter.
My Response
There are many ways to learn and master grammar therefore it is ultimately up to the learner
to choose a method that is more to his liking. In my opinion, the best way to master a craft is
by routinely practicing for as the saying goes practice makes perfect. Many learners lack the
impetus required to swiftly champion their chosen language. This has to change in order for
them to be effective learners. Aside from that, many learners struggle to speak without
making any grammatical errors. To that end, I'd advise speaking to people in English instead
of their mother tongue. This will most definitely galvanize their assertion when speaking in
English. If they keep that up, they'll be speaking flawless English in next to no time.
