Dau Dular Singh Mandraji

Dau Dular Singh Mandraji was born on 1 April 1911 in a prosperous zamindar family of
Raveli village. It was owned by four or five villages. You had a special love for song and
dance since childhood. In those days, there was a lot of speech in the village. This was
the transi on period of the Nachha performances performed with standing tools or
torches. This popular form developed and effec vely took the form of Gama-Nacha
and made it to the stage. You have contributed immensely in the journey of stage
development of Nacha.
Taking the ini a ve to refine this genre from distrac on, you started the stage with a
stage performance in Raveli village. His group, equipped with capable ar sts,
gradually started gaining popularity. The folk journey of Chha sgarhi Nacha began to
spread its fame in many small places from Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Jagdalpur,
Ambikapur, Raigad to Tatanagar. The dance of the Raveli party at Rajabandha Maidan
in Raipur is s ll remembered today.
You have the credit for exposing veterans like Madan Nishad, Lalu, Bhulavaram,
Fidabai Mercam, Jayanthi, Narada, Sukalu and Fagudas in the field of ac ng through
Nacha. Through the dance, he dedicated his body, mind and money to keep the folk
culture of Chha sgarh alive and for its proper conserva on. The last phase of life was
spent in oblivion and poverty, but by ignoring the desire for personal gain and
apprecia on, you considered the prosperity of life only the significance of life. He died
in 1984.
This personality, which keeps the demonstra ve folk genre alive, its restora on in the general public and
the support of folk ar sts, is inspiring for the new genera on. The Chha sgarh government has
ins tuted the Dau Mandraji honor for folk arts / cra s in his memory.
