5. Functions
The individual protection function of the SLR140 Over current and Earth Fault Relay
can independently of each other be enabled or disabled according to the requirements
of the application.
5.1. Principle of the Numerical Protection Technique
The SLR140 relay is designed using numerical technology. This means that all
signal filtering, protection and control functions are made by digital processing.
The numerical technology used in the relay is primarily based on an adapted fast
Fourier (FFT) analysis, in which case the no of calculations (multiplications &
additions) required to filter the measuring quantity remains reasonable.
By using synchronized sampling of the measured signal (phase or earth fault
current) and a sample rate according to the 2n series, the FFT technique leads to a
solution, which can be realized with just a 8 bit micro-controller without using a
separate DSP (Digital Signal Processor)
The synchronized sampling means an even number of 2n samples per period,
e.g.16 samples/ period. This means that the frequency must be measured and the
no of samples per period must be controlled accordingly, so that the no of samples
per period remains constant should the frequency change.

The three phase over current unit comprises adjustable over current stages,
i.e. I>, I>>
Stage I> can be configured for definite time or inverse time operation
characteristic.
Stage I>> have definite time characteristic.

When the over current exceeds the low-set I> setting value, the over current low-set
element starts and delivers a start signal to the display panel and a group of pre
assigned relay outputs. After a delay time, determined by the inverse time current
characteristics curve selected and the measured current, this over current element
operates and delivers trip signal to the display panel and a group of relay outputs that
are configured to link to the low-set over current tripping.
When the over current exceeds the high-set I>> setting value, the over current high-
set element starts and delivers a start signal to the display panel and a group of pre
assigned relay outputs. After a preset time determined by I>> delay, instantaneous
over current element operates and a group of relay outputs that are configured to link
to high-set over current tripping.
The low set stage (I>) of the over current unit can be confirmed for inverse current
characteristics. Seven sets of characteristics curves according to IEC 60255 are available
for the low set stage. i.e. ‘Normal Inverse’ (NI), ‘Very Inverse’ (VI), ‘Extremely Inverse’
(EI), ‘Long Time Inverse’ (LTI), ‘3S’ Curve, ‘1.3S’ Curve and ‘0.6S’ curve.
One earth fault current unit comprises adjustable earth fault current stages,
i.e. Io>, Io>>
Stage Io> can be configured for definite time or inverse time operation
characteristic.
Stage Io>> have definite time characteristic.
When the earth fault current exceeds the low-set Io> setting value, the earth fault
low-set element starts and delivers a start signal to the display panel and a group of
pre assigned relay outputs. After a delay time, determined by the inverse time
current characteristics curve selected and the measured current, this earth-fault
element operates and delivers trip signal to the display panel and a group of relay
outputs that are configured to link to the low-set earth-fault tripping.
When the earth fault current exceeds the high-set Io>> setting value, the earth fault
High-set element starts and delivers a start signal to the display panel and a group of
pre assigned relay outputs. After a preset time determined by Io>> delay,
instantaneous earth fault element operates and a group of relay outputs that are
configured to link to high-set earth fault tripping.
The operation of the circuit breaker failure protection is based on the supervision of
the operating time, from the pickup of the configured trip relay to the dropout of the
same relay.
If that time is longer than the operating time of the CBFP stage, the CBFP stage
activates another output relay, which will remain activated, until the primary trip
relay resets.
The CBFP stage functions also in earth fault situations, because its function is merely
based on supervision of the function of the output trip relay .
The CBFP blocking signal prevents the CBFP stage from operating, when the
Output relays or any other protection function is operated by forced control.
This protection feature allows the relay to trip the upstream circuit breaker when a
local breaker failure condition is detected.
The function of the micro controller and the associated circuitry as well as the program
execution is supervised by means of a separate watchdog circuit. Besides
supervising the relay the watchdog circuit attempts to restart the micro controller in a
fault situation. If the restarting fails, the watchdog issues a self-supervision alarm
because of a permanent relay fault.
When the RTC or EPROM fail is detected the Inservice LED is permanent ON and
any assign output relay for Self supervision will be high.
5.2.5. Auto-Recloser
Introduction
In electric power distribution, an auto reclosing is a circuit breaker equipped with a
mechanism that can automatically close the breaker after it has been opened due to a fault.
Auto reclosing are used in coordinated protection schemes for overhead line power
distribution circuits. These circuits are prone to transitory faults such as nearby lightning
strikes, wind-borne debris, animals climbing the insulators, and the likes. With a
conventional circuit breaker or fuse, a transient fault would open the breaker or blow the
fuse, disabling the line until a technician could manually close the circuit breaker or
replace the blown fuse. But an auto reclosing will make several pre-programmed attempts
to re-energize the line. If the transient fault has cleared, the auto reclosing circuit breaker
will remain closed and normal operation of the power line will resume. If the fault is
some sort of a permanent fault (downed wires, tree branches lying on the wires, etc.) the
auto reclosing will exhaust its pre-programmed attempts to re-energize the line and
remain tripped off until manually commanded to try again. 90% of faults on overhead
power lines are transient and can be cured by auto reclosing. [3] The result is increased
availability of supply.
Basic Requirements
5.2.6. Cold load pickup (CLP): Avoidance of Circuit Breaker tripping due to initial in-rush
currents at turn-on.
The relay monitors the status of 'NO' contact of CB and starts cold load time delay, 'CLP
delay'. During this time the relay uses 'CLP I Current setting’, and blocks one or more
stages of over current & earth fault protection function. In result the relay delays the
normal trip function setting for the duration set under 'CLP delay' setting, so as to avoid
CB tripping due to excessive in-rush current occurring upon CB turn-on. Upon
completion of the 'CLP delay' the relay would perform the protection functions as per its
normal OC + EF settings.
NOTE: Caution should be exercised while programming the 'CLP delay' and it should
be set at minimum possible value to avoid the persistent fault prevail on the line.
Condition:
As soon as D.I 1 or CB ON is made high, a timer starts and stops as per the set time in
CLP Delay settings.
I1/ I2/ I3/ E Phase current value < CLP I set range value
From the time of D.I.1 or CB ON goes high, if current in all the input is lower than the
CLP set range, then CLP would block the functions such as I>, I>>, Io> and Io>> until
the time delay expires.
If the same current persists after the timer has stopped, then actual fault functions will
take over. After timer has completed, the relay will work in normal mode as usual.
I1/ I2/ I3/E Phase current value > CLP I set range value.
From the time of D.I1 or CB ON goes high, if current in any of the input is higher than
the CLP set range then relay will trip with CLP Fault.
Settings:
System setting ↑ CLP Settings → CLP Range (For Min. % of load/ current setting 10%
to 3200%)
System setting ↑ CLP Settings → CLP Delay ( For setting delay in seconds for the timer
to be active )
System setting ↑ CLP Settings → CLP BLOCK ALL= Yes/ No (If No is selected there
will be option to block individual functions)
System setting ↑ Enable Stages → CLP Enable? = Yes/ No
Broken conductors in aerial lines are a type of fault some times very hard to detect in
distribution networks. Traditional approaches to detect broken conductors have been
based on some type of zero current based relaying, but the limitations of such a tradition
are well known. Because of that, in recent years and with the rise of modern
multifunction relays, some hope has been directed towards conventional protection
principles based not on zero currents, but on negative currents.
I1= Positive Phase Sequence
I2= Negative Phase Sequence
If there is any unbalance in the current input/ load and in % is greater than set BC>
range then after the set delay, assigned relay will trip and also LED9 will be glowing.
If there is any unbalance in the current input/ load and in % is greater than set BC>>
range then after the set delay, BC>> fault will occur and assigned relay will trip and also
LED9 & TRIP LED will be glowing.
