The Internet

How does it work?

By Natalie Ajemian

On the most basic level, the internet is just a set of rules, or

protocols, like Internet Protocol (IP), Hypertext Rules

Transmission Protocol (HTTP), or Transmission Control

Protocol (TCP).
You call on these rules every time you open a browser.

How the browsers Signifies that the The domain
and servers site owns a name
communicate digital certificate
You use an Internet Service
Provider (ISP) - like AT&T -to When you see a  green lock
open a browser and type in a URL on a web page, it proves
that you're safe with
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
or Transport Layer
Security (TLS).

Your device sends out packets of binary information

(1's and 0's) in THREE METHODS:

1. A signal goes out via radio waves to the Fun Fact

router and modem, which direct the bits Bandwidth determines

2. Electric signals on this wire lead to the travel, and is measured
in bit rate. The

*The more cable used means lots of reliability and redundancy.

Now you've moved from your LAN (Local Area Network) to

your WAN (Wide Area Network).

The LAN is like your home,

and the WAN is like a city!

The information is sent to and from IP addresses, which

is a group of numbers assigned to each device online.
Example of the hierarchy of an IPv4 (not IPv6) Address

The IP Address is translated

Sub-network numbers by a Domain Name
Device System (DNS) Server.
BEWARE!
Hackers can fake a website and fool users into sharing
personal information in a practice called DNS Spoofing.

After you connect to a site,

Information you share can be saved

on your device using cookies.

Finally, the
website, made
from HTML, is now
on your browser!
