Crackers over the Keyboard?
While the Buzz doesn’t necessarily recommend it
(Zac had “Coffee Over the Keyboard Day” once upon
a time), being celebrated today is Crackers Over The
Keyboard Day!
Thought up by perennial holiday creators, Thomas
and Ruth Roy of Wellcat Holidays and Herbs, the day
exists to show “you’re still a free thinker”, by taking
crackers or cookies to work and eating them right over
the top of your keyboard. In essence, it’s a day to stop
pretending you are trying to be careful when eating
over your keyboard, or doing anything else. It’s a day
to just let loose and eat crackers or do whatever else
you want with wild abandon.
But more importantly on this date of August
28th, however, is the historic speech that was a call
to end racism in the United States and was given in
front of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on
Washington D.C., a political rally organized by human
and political rights groups.
On August 28th, 1963, over 200,000 people
gathered at the U.S. Capitol to demand jobs and
equality for African-Americans. The “I Have a Dream”
speech by Dr. Martin Luther King became a symbol of
the American civil rights movement and is one of the
most recognizable speeches in recorded history.
His lengthy speech included the following:
“My country ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty,
of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land
of the Pilgrim’s pride, From every mountainside,
let freedom ring!”
