 Introduction

Background of the Study

Social media is computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas,

thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities.

Social media are works of user-created video, audio, text or multimedia that are

published and shared in a social environment, such as a blog, wiki or video hosting site

(Capilanou). In social media you can create whatever you want such like post, chat,

making friends and interact to other persons. Social media is a communication with easier

to connect than ever before. In a one click you communicate with anyone wherever you

are.

Using social media among students has affect their studies, socializing in other

people. The use of social media among students has reached high levels and has affected

their study time, poor grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as

well as diverting their attention from their studies (Ndaku, 2013). Student spend much

time in social media than making their academic works.

The researchers aim to determine the positive and negative effect of social media

to the Senior High School Students of Calayan Educational Foundation Inc. Researchers

also wants to determine the time they spend on social media with this study researchers

can come up with a useful recommendation to raise awareness to students who use social

media. The population of SHS students are 2000 and they are all be given a chance to be

part of the study.

Review Related Literature

The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook,

Youtube, Instagram, and Twitter has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some

time. Though it all started has been a hobby for several computer literates individual has

changed to become a social norm and existence-style for students around the world

(Nicole, 2007). Facebook users often experience poor academic performance. Also

Karpinski (2009) stated that social media has a negative association with students’

academic performance which is much greater than the advantages derived through the use

of social media platforms. People around the globe have been addicted to the internet

which has given rise to more students using social media more often than before. In

addition the majority of students feel that social platforms have positive impact on

academic growth (Oye, 2012). Nalwa & Anand (2003) advised and recommended that

those who are addicted users love to use the internet to set back their personal and

professional responsibilities in which the final outcome is poor academic performance.

Also Karpinski (2009) stated that social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter etc) users

usually devote lesser time to their studies has to compared to nonusers did and

subsequently has lower GPAs. It was also mentioned by Karpinski, & Duberstein (2009),

that among the major distraction of current generation that social media platform (such

Facebook, Twitter etc.) remains a major distractions.

Statement of the Problem

The world today is a global market in which internet is the most important sort of

information. Since the advent of social media sites in the 1990`s, it assumed in some

quarters that the behavior and academic performance of students is facing a lot of neglect

and challenges.

Significant of the Study

This study is significant to the teachers, parents, and students. This study

will help the teachers of the school to know the impact of social media has on

their students, so as to assist them to enlighten and create awareness to the

students on the possible impact it has on them. The study is of significant to

parents in the sense that they will know the possible effects these social media

usage has on their children.

The study will enable the students of the senior level so that they will be

aware that, apart from the social benefits of this social networking site, using the sites

more than necessary will pose possible dangers to their health. It will be relevant in

assisting students in understanding the diversity of social media. It will provide relevance

material for students and other researchers undertaking similar research. The study will

help researchers with more information on the impact of social media on Senior High

School students.
 The study that will be conducted by the researchers will be having more

significance that can benefit by the following:

a. The students who use social media.

b. Teacher of the students that use social media.

c. The parents of the students who use social media.

Scope of the Study

The focus of this research work is to primarily study the Influence of social media
on theacademic performance of students. The study will comprise students in University
ofLagos.
