EXAVER 2
GUIDE FOR CANDIDATES
GENERAL INFORMATION
EXAVER 2 is the second of the series of 3 proficiency examinations in General English designed by
Universidad Veracruzana. EXAVER 2 is not related to any particular course syllabus in any way. This
exam follows the general principles and standards of The Council of Europe’s Threshold 1990 document.
The standards of the exam coincide with ALTE Level 2 and are similar to those required by UCLES at
Preliminary English Test Level.
EXAVER 2 candidates are expected “to ask questions and to provide information, to elicit opinions,
views, preferences, and to express them, to refer to past, present and future events, to express reasons
why and conditions under which something may happen and to understand others doing so, etc. Also,
they will have to be famliar with certain social conventions and common assumptions inherent in manners
of expression in the English Language, and they will need to be aware of how cultural differences may be
reflected in communicative behaviour.”
(Waystage 1990, p,5. J.A.van Ek and J.L.M. Trim, Council of Europe1991, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge,
U.K.)
It is also expected that candidates at this level will be prepared for “exposure to a variety of situations
in which such features as participant roles, setting, communicative goal, etc., significantly affect the choice
of language forms.”
(Threshold 1990, p.8, J.A.van Ek and J.L.M. Trim, Council of Europe 1991, Cambridge University Press,
Cambridge, U.K.)
Candidates should also be able to interact effectively in the specified communicative activities with native
speakers of English and non-native speakers of English, who are using English as a common tool for every
day and professional communication, whether the situations are predictable or not. Candidates should
be able to communicate face-to-face, by telephone or through the written mode. If candidates have
already achieved the objectives of EXAVER Level 1, they will need, as a rough guide, a further 180 – 200
hrs of effective, systematic study to achieve the objectives of EXAVER Level 2.
