What is Architectural Design?

The Architectural design is a concept that unifies the different elements and components
of a structure into a functional whole; these are the different steps involved in an
Architectural Design.

 1. Schematic Design
The first step of the design phase. As an architect starts a design, information must
be gathered in order to create design options for the client; this includes needs,
style, and wants for the upcoming project.
 2. Design Development
The chosen design options given by the architect will be developed to an approved
design concept with the plans given more detailed description.
 3. Construction Documents
The architect will turn their sketches into documents that will be used by other
professionals such as contractors, engineers and landscape architects to ensure
that the project is fully functional to the client.
What is Design Approach?
Is a process on how the Architect approaches a proposed project; such as:

 Sustainable Approach
- This design approach seeks to minimize any factors involved in negative
environmental impact such as incorporating sustainable energy use and
building place; the structure must be as environmentally friendly as possible.
 The Experimental Approach
- This design strategy is about aesthetics and beauty; it takes into account the
end user’s experience, making the whole structure immersive to the end user.
 The Practical Approach
- Arguably the most used design in Architecture as it seems to be the most
compatible approach to the modern day structures. The project is cost-efficient,
uses practical materials, a traditionalist strategy, and an efficient design.
What is Design Concept?

A design concept is the back bone of the whole project; although it may start as an idea,
it slowly grows to become an idea for a project, it is where a project begins and it also
shows where and how the project continues. It dictates the outcome of the process of the
project including providing guidelines on what the project/client needs and wants.

What is Design Metaphors?

Design Metaphors are used to tackle problems in design; it can help in problem reflection
and explore different design alternatives.

There are different design metaphors such as “Form follows function” wherein the outside
appearance of a structure comes as a result of the building’s internal function. Another
design metaphor is “Less is more” which is decreasing architectural design and relying
on its minimal and simple nature, such as the Minimalistic lifestyle we know today.
