Unlimited Freedom and Power:

Its Implications to a Young Civilization
Lord of the Flies

On the first few glances, the work quite gave me an amusement as it opens along with the
use of several words I didn’t expect would be present in a critical paper filled with three
thousand words like boom and phew and so on and so forth. However, in reading the
introduction, the author sincerely carries the messages it wanted to tell its reader- the first few
pages already gave me an overview of what to expect on the entire six pages of his work. In
addition, through his understanding of being a child, free from all the toxic thoughts brought by
this world- the author approaches his reader’s of what it’s like to be young and fortunate that
during this day, none of us have to undergo what the characters of The Lord of the Flies had gone
through.

In this modern day, the problem that the youth faces is the control over the course of their
lives in the absence of their parents. There are countless of children outside who long for such
guidance, for a home to live at composed of a mother and a father, facing an everyday routine
without food and a roof to comfort their night. In this manner, the author pointed out the same
struggle faced by the young individuals in The Lord of The Flies- thinking that they had to
govern themselves with just little of their capabilities. On the wider aspect, these kids are left
with the choice of violence to cope up with their livings- very young yet already exposed with
the cruelty of this world.

On the other hand, the author presents the complement of governance to our society:
someone in charge to govern us. However, in the political structure of this system, there’s always
that person who thirst for the highest authority. Furthermore, the author presents multiple
counterparts of the characters in the modern world including the politicians and the current
citizens in which I would like to add one of my professor’s remarks; that the most corrupt
politicians we know have once been young whereas free from toxic and evil thoughts brought by
this cruel world- these politicians have started inside the corners of their school classrooms and
fueled with teachings of human values. Moreover, the views of the author regarding the
counterpart of the happenings in the book to our modern world is, I must say, a unique way to
find relevance to. Hence, the consecutive pages of the work had become more of a narrative
about the happenings of the book in the sense that it makes me want to read William Golding’s
The Lord of the Flies.

The work has successfully performed a well-written critique that merely tackled the main
issues presented in the novel which are freedom and power as they usually get along together.
More than that, the author leaves the notion of significance of guidance to youth. As being a part
of it, I carry with me the hope of this generation- the faith of our elders and a pride that someday
I will be in charge of our deep-rooted society.

Unlimited Freedom and Power: Its Implications to a Young Civilization, Lord of the Flies
nonetheless offers us the possibility of what could be a youth if it lacks guidance and is
completely surrounded by violence. Children could never have a capability of taking in charge
and in this critique, it was told how they had no choice but to do so that later on, had an
implication to their psychological aspect. Furthermore, I would have to agree that power is
another factor that drives a person to overlap one’s moral values that’s resulting to immoral
deeds. In relevance to the modern society, it brings chaos in wars, killings and corruption- all of
these are painful to imagine that the characters of the Lord of the Flies, young individuals as they
are, have already been through such cruelty of this world.

On the brighter side, after reading the overall critical paper, it has given me an
anticipation to dig deeper on each character’s perspective and how Golding demonstrates the
destruction of a certain civilization simply due to power-hunger and carelessness of one’s
definition of freedom.
