Welcome to Art Appreciation! This is a semester long course where students will be exploring various art skills,
mediums, and conceptual ideas. Each project will help students become more aware of their personal expression
and view of the world while learning how to be creative problem solvers and well rounded artists. This course will
cover multiple units involving drawing, painting, ceramics, collage, and photography.

-----------------------------------CLASSROOM CULTURE------------------------------------
When we make art, it is an expression of ourselves, which can mean many things for different people. This class will
encourage students to look deep within, and with that comes vulnerability. It is essential that every student feels
comfortable to share and talk about their artwork without fear of judgment. Therefore, it is pertinent that everyone
treats each other with the upmost respect and kindness always. I know you are all capable of creating personal and
meaningful artwork, and I will do my best to support you in any way I can. I look forward to exploring the world of art
with all of you!
-------------------------------------------GRADES----------------------------------------
STANDARDS BASED GRADING
Boltz Middle School uses the Standards-Based Grading Framework which was created to establish a teaching and
learning framework that serves all students. In Art, students are assessed and graded based on the four main art
standards; observe and learn to comprehend, envision and critique to reflect, invent and discover to create, and relate
and connect to transfer. Students grades are a cumulation of formative and summative assessments including but
not limited to; sketchbook checks, quizzes, critiques, artist statements, final projects, tickets out the door, pre-
assessments, gallery walks, etc. All formative and summative assessments are student driven and allow for students
to reflect on their own artistic practice and make personal goals for their learning. Every project will give students the
opportunity to reflect on their artistic growth through self-evaluation and artist statements.
------------------------------------ATTENDANCE--------------------------------
o Much of student’s artwork must be done in class due to material availability. Students need to be in class
and on time to be working on their projects, participating in critiques, etc. Students will be given adequate
class time to complete each project. If students do not use class time wisely, they may need to take their
project home or come in at lunch to make sure it gets completed on time. I am not available before or after
school.
o For any excused absence I will allow students up to two class periods to complete any work they may have
missed. For any unexcused absence students are still expected to complete and turn in any missed work on
time.
o Students at Boltz are expected to follow the school-wide tardy policy and will receive two “free” tardies,
because I understand that sometimes lockers get jammed and life happens. However, on the third tardy
students will be required to make a call home. Any tardies after that will follow the standard procedure of
the tardy and attendance policy.
o Please communicate with me regarding tardies and absences. I understand that my class is on the opposite
end of the school and everyone has many things going on during the day, if you communicate with me and
meet me halfway I will do my best to help you fix tardiness or attendance issues.
----------------------------------CELL PHONES--------------------------------
o Cell phones will not be allowed at any time during class, as is the school-wide policy. If a student has their
cell phone out they will be given a verbal warning to put it away. If it continues to be an issue I will
confiscate the phone and the student may pick it up at the office at the end of the day. Sometimes as a class
reward students may be allowed to listen their own music on their phones, but only at my discretion.
----------------------------CLASSROOM PROCEDURES-----------------------------
BATHROOM AND OTHER HALL PASSES
o Students may raise their hand and ask to use the restroom during work time only
o Only one student can be in the hallway at a time
o Students are expected to use this privilege responsibly
o School policy states that students must receive a written hall pass from me stating their reason for leaving
the room and the time they left (restroom, counselor, wellness center, locker.)
BEHAIVOR
oStudents are expected to be respectful, responsible, on task, and following the Phoenix Pride matrix at all
times. Students will be given a verbal warning if they are not demonstrating expected behaviors. A warning
is a gentle reminder to refocus and redirect their behavior. Everyone needs reminders at times, and a
warning is simply that. After two warnings the student will be asked to have a chat in the hallway, again this
is just a casual conversation for the teacher to understand why the student is having issues with behavior.
After the hallway conversation the teacher and student will re-enter the classroom and continue with class. If
the student continues to be disruptive, they will be sent to the office or the hallway to complete a problem
solving sheet.
o If a student’s behavior is out of control, the warning process will be skipped and the student will be sent
directly to the office.
MATERIALS
o Students are expected to come to class with their sketchbooks, a pencil, and laptop every day. All other art
materials will be provided. Please treat these materials with the utmost respect. These materials should
never leave the art room.
FOOD & DRINK
o Because this is an art room with messy materials, students are not allowed to have any food or drink.
Students are more than welcome bring water in a clear water bottle with a lid.
-------------PLEASE DETACH AND RETURN BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH--------------
