Date of conduction: / / 20….. Date of submission: / /20…....

AIM:
Study the relationship between the input signal and received signal of 650 nm Fiber Optic
Analog & digital link.

APPERATUS REQUIRED:

1. ST2501 Techbook with power supply cord .

2. Optical Fibre cable.

3. Cathode ray oscilloscope with necessary connecting probe.

THEORY:
A communication system transmits information from one place to another, whether separated by
a few kilometers or by transoceanic distances. Information is often carried by an electromagnetic
carrier wave whose frequency can vary from a few megahertz to several hundred terahertzes.
Optical communication systems use high carrier frequencies (∼100 THz) in the visible or near-
infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are sometimes called light wave systems
to distinguish them from microwave systems, whose carrier frequency is typically smaller by
five orders of magnitude (∼1 GHz). Fiber-optic communication systems are light wave systems
that employ optical fibers for information transmission.
Fiber-optic communications is the method of transmitting data from one point to another by
sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. Figure 1.0 shows a generic block diagram of an
optical communication system. It consists of a transmitter, a communication channel, and a
receiver, the three elements common to all communication systems. Optical communication
systems can be classified into two broad categories: Optical fiber is a waveguide made of very

thin tubes of glass whose diameter is of the order of a few micrometers. Here the optical fiber
works on the principle of ‘Total Internal Reflection’.

PROCEDURE:
1. Connect the power supply cord to the main power plug & to Techbook ST2501.
2. Ensure that all switched faults are OFF.
3. Make the connections as shown in connection diagram.
a. Connect the function generator 1 KHz sine wave output to emitter input.
b. Connect the fiber optic cable between emitter output and detector input.
c. Connect the detector output to AC amplifier input.
4. On the board, put switch SW1 emitter driver to Analog mode.
5. Switch ‘On’ the power supply of the Techbook and oscilloscope.
6. Observe the input to emitter (TP5) with the output from AC amplifier (TP19) on
CRO.
