INTRODUCTION TO TRANSPORTATION

Transport or Transportation is the movement of humans, animals and goods from one location to another. In
other words, the action of transport is defined as a particular movement of an organism or thing from a point A
to a Point B. Modes of transport include air, land (rail and road), water, cable, pipeline and space. The field can
be divided into infrastructure, vehicles and operations. Transport enables trade between people, which is
essential for the development of civilizations.
Transport infrastructure consists of the fixed installations,
including roads, railways, airways, waterways, canals and pipelines and terminals such as airports, railway
stations, bus stations, warehouses, trucking terminals, refueling depots (including fueling docks and fuel
stations) and seaports. Terminals may be used both for interchange of passengers and cargo and for
maintenance.
Vehicles traveling on these networks may
include automobiles, bicycles, buses, trains, trucks, helicopters, watercraft, spacecraft and aircraft.
Operations deal with the way the vehicles are operated, and the procedures set for this purpose, including
financing, legalities, and policies. In the transport industry, operations and ownership of infrastructure can be
either public or private, depending on the country and mode.
Passenger transport may be public, where operators provide scheduled services, or private. Freight transport has
become focused on containerization, although bulk transport is used for large volumes of durable items.
Transport plays an important part in economic growth and globalization, but most types cause air
pollution and use large amounts of land. While it is heavily subsidized by governments, good planning of
transport is essential to make traffic flow and restrain urban sprawl.

Humans' first means of transport involved walking, running and swimming. The domestication of animals
introduced a new way to lay the burden of transport on more powerful creatures, allowing the hauling of heavier
loads, or humans riding animals for greater speed and duration. Inventions such as the wheel and the sled helped
make animal transport more efficient through the introduction of vehicles. Water transport, including rowed and
sailed vessels, dates back to time immemorial, and was the only efficient way to transport large quantities or
over large distances prior to the Industrial Revolution.
The first forms of road transport involved animals, such as horses (domesticated in the 4th or the 3rd
millennium BCE), oxen (from about 8000 BCE) or humans carrying goods over dirt tracks that often
followed game trails. Many early civilizations, including those in Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley,
constructed paved roads. In classical antiquity, the Persian and Roman empires built stone-paved roads to allow
armies to travel quickly. Deep roadbeds of crushed stone underneath kept such roads dry. The
medieval Caliphate later built tar-paved roads. The first watercraft were canoes cut out from tree trunks. Early
water transport was accomplished with ships that were either rowed or used the wind for propulsion, or a
combination of the two. The importance of water has led to most cities that grew up as sites for trading being
located on rivers or on the sea-shore, often at the intersection of two bodies of water. Until the Industrial
Revolution, transport remained slow and costly, and production and consumption gravitated as close to each
other as feasible.

INDIAN TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

The Indian transportation industry is diligently creating at a CAGR of 15 per cent. With in excess of seven
million stock vehicles moving around the country, the freight volume has accomplished 1,325 billion ton-km, an
expectation that should two fold by 2025. We spend appropriate around 14 per cent of our GDP on transportation
and collaborations, however, in made countries, the spend is around 6–8 per cent. Regardless, the industry
remains seriously isolated, disordered and unforgiving in nature. In order to get a predominant appreciation of the
issues, we ought to grasp the ordinary exercises in the business and its key accomplices.

Synchronized Supply Systems Ltd

In the trucking business, spot grandstand or mandi accept a basic occupation, especially in the Indian setting.
Notwithstanding how immense or little a player is, one needs to contact the spot market to fulfil their step by step
transportation necessities. The infographic underneath evidently clears up the workings of the spot grandstand.
The key players in the market are -

• Shipper — The shipper is the fundamental proprietor of the items, who needs it to be transported from a
territory to the objective. Once in a while, the stock sent may have various stacking and exhausting core interests.
Shipper is a retailer, creator, trader or some other firm — any similarity to ITC, Asian Paints, Patanjali, Tata Steel
et cetera — that necessities to move stock constantly.

• Transporter — The transporter puts it all on the line (money related/credit) of conveyance the stock and it is
his obligation to put the vehicles at the stacking point, ensure that the vital written word is done, and pay the
improvement money to the vehicle supplier with the objective that the items can be dispatched. Transporters
generally need to pay 80–90 per cent of the charges early and the remaining on the receipt of the confirmation of
movement, and they can’t raise a receipt to the shipper with the exception of on the off chance that they get a
proof-of-movement, or, at the end of the day 3 weeks from the day the items are passed on. When the receipt is
exhibited, the shipper, consistently, takes 30–60 days to make the portion. So the activity of the transporter is
seriously capital-subordinate.

• Broker — As the name suggests the agent is a trusted in neighbourhood contact who heads the supply side. The
merchant exists so a vehicle can be re-coordinated back to its source. If anything turns out gravely with the
vehicle in the midst of the movement time period, it is the operator’s commitment to ensuring that the vehicle is
superseded and the items are dispatched. In India, this is normally a one-man shop that spots wherever someplace
in the scope of five and 100 vehicles on an ordinary introduce. The agent exists since it’s unfathomable for the
transporter or shipper to direct execute with the fleet proprietor as he is missing locally.

• A fleet proprietor or carrier– He is the proprietor of the vehicle and his basic goal is to ensure the most
outrageous utilization of the vehicle. For reliably the vehicle is ‘un-set’ he needs to hold up under the cost. Naval
force proprietors once in a while approach the transporter particularly. Regardless, in such cases, there is an
accreditation of a base load from the intrigue side and a strict KYC is done by the transporter. The naval force
proprietors are energetically separated in India, with more than 80 per cent of the fleets asserted by people having
under 10 vehicles, which delivers the representatives.

Designating a pile to a vehicle is anything but a basic methodology, as there are distinctive substances related
with the entire trade and various activities happen outside of anyone’s ability to see before the vehicle can be in-
travel. Spot promote is such it is vivaciously time-bound i.e., a shipper requires a vehicle frantically and
associates with the transporter who, subsequently, contacts the live spot grandstand (specialists and naval force
proprietors) to get the present rates, and since these trades are bound by time, this prompts colossal esteem
unconventionality.

In India, there are various techniques for assertions did by shippers to administer truck stack exercises. The
normal estimation essentially is that in India, lawfully restricting associations cover around 30–40 per cent of the
market, while spot involves whatever is left off. Shippers normally use a mix of various sorts of associations with
managing their truckload exercises.

How do spot markets function?

In a vehicle association drives start arranging toward the beginning of the day i.e., the shippers assert the essential
of truck stack advancement for the next day. Meanwhile, the vehicle suppliers get honest to goodness be careful
with a load of vehicles available as a huge segment of the vehicles are done with their discharging and are set up
for their next trip. Parallels can be drawn between the spot promote and the trading floor at currency markets i.e.,
they are both spoken to by the premium and supply. By 5 pm, the vehicle openness is made open by the suppliers
and the errand starts. Regardless, the suppliers keep their secret weapon close to the chest and the errand does not
happen until after a sensible round of course of action on the consistently evaluating happens. Something as safe
as different phone requires a specific course can drive the expense up certainly as it hurls a sign that the intrigue
is high.

All the above activities occur with moderate or no development and in light of the fact that the market is broad,
partitioned and tumultuous, the truck stack errand has been exposed to endless age procurement frameworks.

When the pile vehicle assignment is done, the transporters have the last check to ensure that the drivers fathom
the stacking point adequately and are on course. The vehicles are stacked, the documentation process is done, and
the, transporters pay out the advancement of money to the vehicle suppliers. In this trade 80–90 per cent of the
money is paid out to the vehicle supplier as improvement and the rest is paid out on the transport of the items.

By what strategy would innovation have the capacity to smoothen the working of spot feature?

There have been different undertakings made to develop an exchange that can recreate the spot publicize in the
online world. What’s more, a lot of the shippers have endeavoured to move to electronic techniques for managing
their truck stack assignments, in any case, a pack have had the ability to move successfully in India. A lot of
shippers have used pitching stages to select ways, courses, or volumes to transporters. In any case,
notwithstanding the way that the shippers have picked the online way, the transporters, dealers and naval force
proprietors need to come down to the spot market to fulfil the consistent stacks.

Advancement can expect a colossal activity in bringing the spot showcases on the web. In any case, the going
with points of view ought to be tended to definitely –

• Trust — The transportation business is obnoxious in nature and players ordinarily are not open to executing
with one another aside from on the off chance that they realize their character overseeing. There are issues, for
instance, pilferage of money or stock or both at various layers that can’t be settled ahead of time. What’s more,
the portion cycles are not outstandingly magnificent, joined by terrible commitments, which augment the money
related hazard and can incite players shutting shop.
• Ease of usage — We are not overseeing in fact learned people here. The exchanges ought to be fundamental,
with multi-vernacular support and should get straightforwardness of-cooperating and meanwhile should possibly
build up the business. A vehicle proprietor in Gujarat, for example, should have the ability to execute with a
shipper in Assam, without being accessible physically.

• Cut down centre individuals — There should be some cleaved down in the number of layers required between
the shipper and the beneficiary. By then simply the esteeming would hint at enhancement and the naval force
proprietors would get their real pay.

• Educate — The industry ought to be instructed about a lot of issues, for instance, task force enhancement, road
prosperity measures, propitious movements and making the best use of the system. The more a vehicle moves the
better it is for the economy.

INDIAN TRANSPORATION SYSTEM

Transportation plays a key role in the growth of a country’s economic system; in shaping overall productiveness,
quality of life of people, access to commodity and services.

An effective and well devised transportation system plays a significant role in the economic development of a
nation. In a country like India, that is of a size of a continent, where economic resources and commercial
markets are dotted across the length and breadth of the land, the projection and implementation of an efficient,
affordable, dependable and safe transport facilities and services presumes additional importance.

The transportation system in India consists of assorted modes of transportation, which include road transport,
civil aviation, rail transport, inland water transport, coastal shipping, and pipelines and so on. The transportation
system in our country has registered a great run and a solid growth over the years in terms of network spread
and transport system output. Various dedicated ministries, authorities, directorates and departments including
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, National Highways Authority of India, Ministry of Shipping,
Ministry of Civil Aviation are responsible for the establishment and execution of policies and programs for the
development of system of transportation in the country.

Traditional Transport System of India

The world we live today is a place that is driven by innovation and technology. Transportation is made easy with
diverse means of transport options that come with a wide range of facilities and offer high class services to
people. For instance, even small sized cars in the market today come packed with a long list of interior and
exterior feature which include power-assisted steering, power windows, airbags, tilt adjustable steering, GPS
and navigation systems and so on. Keeping the luxury factory aside, most of the cutting-edge features
introduced are primarily for the purpose of making the travel experience easier!

In ancient times, there were no automobiles and there were no roads either! But then, people those days had
many modes of transport to move around! Not just many modes, people those days used transportation system
that was absolutely non-motorized and 100% Eco-friendly. Well, the first transport form of Indians was Shanks
pony (walking; your own legs for walking as a means of transport). Those days, people preferred walking as the
most important mode of transport even for covering long distances.

The earliest mode of transportation has not lost its sheen that even today; walking is considered as one of the
most common mode of transport in India. Then came a time where the luxury tag entered the transport system
of India, for the first time, in the name of Palanquins. Popularly known as Palkis, Palanquins basically are wheel
less conveyance consisting of a chair or bed carried on two poles by bearers. Today, the usage of Palanquins is
limited to special occasions like wedding ceremonies.
Subsequently, people those days picked up the art of training and using the animals for the purpose of transport,
sooner or later. Bullock carts and horse carriages came into existence in India. As a matter of fact, bullock carts
were a huge hit and became the most leisurely mode of transportation in the rural parts of our country. The
commencement of the British rule in the Indian subcontinent furthered the usage of horse carriages in the
country. Today, bullock carts and horse carriages are mostly banned in the urban centers and are seen as a rare
mode of transport, that children today are jaw dropping when spotting one!

The subsequent years witnessed the introduction of hand pulled rickshaws and cycle rickshaws which are
operated even today in some parts of the country. Most of the urban centers in India banned the movement of
hand pulled rickshaws and cycle rickshaws in city limits due to their slow moving nature which potentially
create traffic congestion. However, both hand pulled rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are regarded as the most
uncomplicated, non-motorized mode of transport in India.

Road Transport in India

As of 2013, India has a whopping network of road of about 2,914,133 mi (4,689,842 km), which indicates the
fact that road transport is the most predominant mode of transport in India. At 660 meters of roads per square
kilometer of solid ground, the quantitative compactness of our country's network of road is much more eminent
than that of People's Republic of China and Federative Republic of Brazil. The official records from
the Government of India indicates that as of 2011, about 25,30,000 kilometers of roads were completed.

India's road network is the second largest network in the world

Major road development projects are being carried out under the National Highways Development Project, a
government initiative implemented in the year 1998. Besides, highway operators and private entities are
carrying out many important road development projects. For instance, the Yamuna Expressway - a six lane
(extendable to eight lanes), 102.52 miles (165 km) long, expressway exclusively designed for high-speed
vehicle traffic, linking Greater Noida with Agra in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, was implemented by the
Jaypee Group of Noida.

At present, the Government of India is seeking to boost investments from foreign countries in road projects.
Foreign involvement in the Indian road network expansion has appealed to several international contractors and
engineering consultants, with Malaysia, Republic of Korea, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland and United States of America being the most prominent participants.

India's extensive network of road holds over 65 % of its cargo and about 85 % of vehicular traffic

India's massive network of road is administrated by assorted government agencies. Find below the information

BUS TRANSPORT IN INDIA :

Bus Transport in India - A Boon to Common Man

Buses are considered as the most affordable and handy mode of transport for all economic classes of society in
India.

Buses take over 90% of public transport across the cities in India.

Typically, state government run corporations like Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC),
Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC), Nagaland State Transport (NST), Andhra
Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) and
so on. It is important to mention that most of the state government owned transport corporations innovated the
bus transport services by bringing air conditioned buses, low floor buses, WiFi enabled buses, LCD television
installed buses and so on, on roads.

Across the Indian cities, an interesting initiative, popularly known as BRTS, that is, Bus Rapid Transit systems
have been implemented by many state governments to amend the existing public transport facilities and services
in systems in cities. BRTS is all about prioritizing bus commuters with forward-looking facilities and features
which include smart ticketing system, lenient boarding system, announcements for passengers, apportioning
exclusive space for BRTS and so on. Some of the cities which already have the BRTS in the country
include Mumbai, Delhi, Surat, Pune, Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Jaipur.
Furthermore, many Indian cities operate dedicated bus services (sightseeing buses) for visitors like HOHO
buses in the Indian capital Delhi.

INTERESTING FACTS:

Chennai, the Detroit of India, is the home of Asia's largest bus terminus, namely, the Chennai Mofussil Bus
Terminus also known as CMBT

INTRODUCTION TO MARKET RESEARCH ON BRAND AWARENESS

INTRODUCTION TO MARKET RESEARCH

Good instincts and intuition certainly play important roles in business. But gut feelings about your customers’
needs and preferences aren’t enough. If you want to minimize risk and improve your chances of success, you
need sound and objective data. That’s where market research comes in.

Market research is the process of collecting and analyzing information about the customers you want to reach,
called your target market. This information provides you with the business intelligence you need to make
informed decisions. Market research can help you create a business plan, launch a new product or service, fine
tune your existing products and services, expand into new markets, develop an advertising campaign, set prices,
and/or select a business location.

TYPES OF MARKET RESEARCH

Market research methods fall into two basic categories: primary and secondary. Your research might involve one
or both, depending on your company’s needs.

Primary research involves collecting original data about the preferences, buying habits, opinions, and attitudes
of current or prospective customers. This data can be gathered in focus groups, surveys, and field tests.
Secondary research is based on existing data from reference books, magazines and newspapers, industry
publications, chambers of commerce, government agencies, or trade associations. It yields information about
industry sales trends and growth rates, demographic profiles, and regional business statistics.

The bulk of your secondary research now is available on the Internet thanks to the proliferation of sites that
provide or sell data about individuals and companies and because most publications now are available online.

USING MARKET RESEARCH

Market research allows you to pinpoint a host of key business factors about your market. It can help you
identify:

 Growth trends in your business sector

 Size of your target market

 Best location for your business

 How your business stacks up against the competition

 Factors that influence buying decisions

 Degree of demand for your product or service

It also can reveal key information about your customers and prospects, including:

 Their demographic profile

 The types of features or special services they want

 What they like and dislike about your product or service

 How they use your product or service

 How often they buy and how much they will pay for your product or service

Once you analyze the results of your market research, you’ll be in a better position to create a focused business
plan, develop a targeted advertising campaign, set competitive prices, select a new business location, or take
other steps to grow your company.

BRAND AWARENESS :

Brand awareness refers to the extent to which customers are able to recall or recognise a brand.

Brand awareness is a key consideration in consumer behavior, advertising management, brand management and
strategy development. The consumer's ability to recognise or recall a brand is central to purchasing decision-
making. Purchasing cannot proceed unless a consumer is first aware of a product category and a brand within
that category. Awareness does not necessarily mean that the consumer must be able to recall a specific brand
name, but he or she must be able to recall sufficient distinguishing features for purchasing to proceed. For
instance, if a consumer asks her friend to buy her some gum in a "blue pack", the friend would be expected to
know which gum to buy, even though neither friend can recall the precise brand name at the time.

Different types of brand awareness have been identified, namely brand recall and brand recognition. Key
researchers argue that these different types of awareness operate in fundamentally different ways and that this
has important implications for the purchase decision process and for marketing communications. Brand
awareness is closely related to concepts such as the evoked set and consideration set which describe specific
aspects of the consumer's purchase decision. Consumers are believed to hold between three and seven brands in
their consideration set across a broad range of product categories.

Consumers will normally purchase one of the top three brands in their consideration set.

Brand awareness is a key indicator of a brand's competitive market performance. Given the importance of brand
awareness in consumer purchasing decisions, marketers have developed a number of metrics designed to
measure brand awareness and other measures of brand health. These metrics are collectively known
as Awareness, Attitudes and Usage (AAU) metrics.

To ensure a product or brand's market success, awareness levels must be managed across the entire product life-
cycle - from product launch through to market decline. Many marketers regularly monitor brand awareness
levels, and if they fall below a predetermined threshold, the advertising and promotional effort is intensified
until awareness returns to the desired level.
IMPORTANCE OF BRAND AWARENESS :

Brand awareness is related to the functions of brand identities in consumers’ memory and can be measured by
how well the consumers can identify the brand under various conditions.
Brand awareness is also central to understanding the consumer purchase decision process. Strong brand
awareness can be a predictor of brand success.
It is an important measure of brand strength or brand equity and is also involved in customer satisfaction, brand
loyalty and the customer's brand relationships.
Brand awareness is a key indicator of a brand's market performance. Every year advertisers invest substantial
sums of money attempting to improve a brand's overall awareness levels. Many marketers regularly monitor
brand awareness levels, and if they fall below a predetermined threshold, the advertising and promotional effort
is intensified until awareness returns to the desired level. Setting brand awareness goals/ objectives is a key
decision in marketing planning and strategy development.
Brand awareness is one of major brand assets that adds value to the product, service or company.
Investments in building brand awareness can lead to sustainable competitive advantages, thus, leading to long-
term value

TYPES OF BRAND AWARENESS:

Marketers typically identify two distinct types of brand awareness; namely brand recall (also known as unaided
recall or occasionally spontaneous recall) and brand recognition (also known as aided brand recall).

These types of awareness operate in entirely different ways with important implications for marketing strategy
and advertising.

BRAND RECALL :

Brand recall is also known as unaided recall or spontaneous recall and refers to the ability of the consumers to
correctly elicit a brand name from memory when prompted by a product category.

Brand recall indicates a relatively strong link between a category and a brand while brand recognition indicates
a weaker link. When prompted by a product category, most consumers can only recall a relatively small set of
brands, typically around 3–5 brand names. In consumer tests, few consumers can recall more than seven brand
names within a given category and for low-interest product categories, most consumers can only recall one or
two brand names.

Research suggests that the number of brands that consumers can recall is affected by both individual and
product factors including; brand loyalty, awareness set size, situational, usage factors and education level. For
instance, consumers who are involved with a category, such as heavy users or product enthusiasts, may be able
to recall a slightly larger set of brand names than those who are less involved.

BRAND RECOGNITION

Brand recognition is also known as aided recall and refers to the ability of the consumers to correctly
differentiate the brand when they come into contact with it. This does not necessarily require that the consumers
identify the brand name. Instead, it means that consumers can recognise the brand when presented with it at the
point-of-sale or after viewing its visual packaging. In contrast to brand recall, where few consumers are able to
spontaneously recall brand names within a given category, when prompted with a brand name, a larger number
of consumers are typically able to recognise it.

TOP-OF-MIND AWARENESS

Consumers will normally purchase one of the top three brands in their consideration set. This is known as top-
of-mind awareness. Consequently, one of the goals for most marketing communications is to increase the
probability that consumers will include the brand in their consideration sets.

By definition, top-of-mind awareness is "the first brand that comes to mind when a customer is asked an
unprompted question about a category." When discussing top-of-mind awareness among larger groups of
consumers (as opposed to a single consumer), it is more often defined as the "most remembered" or "most
recalled" brand name(s).

A brand that enjoys top-of-mind awareness will generally be considered as a genuine purchase option, provided
that the consumer is favourably disposed to the brand name. Top-of-mind awareness is relevant when consumers
make a quick choice between competing brands in low-involvement categories or for impulse type purchases.

Literature Review
Literature Reviews How to Put It All Together PATRICK CASEY GREG LANDGRAF CTC & Associates LLC espite its
importance, the literature review is a relatively poorly understood component of research, and many authors in a
number of fields have lamented the poor quality of literature reviews submitted for publication (1–3). Research agencies,
professors, and others with research administration responsibilities often expect that researchers understand the
importance and expectations for a literature review when, in fact, there is often little focus on it or dialogue about its
intended contribution in a given research project. This document, drawing from the literature surrounding the topic, aims
to summarize the characteristics of effective literature reviews and approaches for writing them. The intended audience
is principal investigators and their teams who conduct research for transportation agencies and who are expected to
deliver a literature review as part of each research project. The literature search and literature resources are treated in
Part I and Appendix E, respectively, of this e-circular. DEFINITION AND PURPOSE OF A LITERATURE REVIEW The literature
review is a critical portion of the research process in any field of inquiry and an important component of the final
research report. For the researcher, a literature review helps to clarify the scope of the research project by creating a
narrative of what is and is not known in the field and where there are areas of dispute. For the customer of the research
and other readers, the review also provides valuable context, establishes the researcher’s expertise and relates the
findings of the project to what is already known. In the case of transportation research, identifying the hallmarks of a
good literature review is complicated by the wide range of business functions and research subject areas falling under
the jurisdiction of federal and state transportation agencies. What might be a good approach for a literature review in
pavement research and related materials sciences may be inappropriate for a literature review related to psychology and
human factors in safety research. In addition, the applied nature of most state-sponsored research often means the
project scope is already well-defined by the customer and not as open-ended as some academic research. It is important
to remember what a literature review is not (4). A bibliography, for example, is merely a list of published works with
author, publisher, date, etc. An annotated bibliography includes a summary or evaluation with each work, but it is still not
a literature review, though it may be a useful step and a separate product of value for both the author and reader. A
literature review is not a list but rather a narrative, organized by topic, with connections between papers made as
appropriate. Within each topic of the literature re works should be given prominence according to their importance and
relevance rather than being presented equally (5): A good literature review comprises a flowing, easy-to-understand
narrative, written in the author’s own style. Each topic should be discussed in turn and, while it is often appropriate to
discuss the literature on each topic in chronological order, this should not be done slavishly. The topics are then
combined in a chapter that should be well organized, and gives the reader a brief, yet reasonably complete picture of the
status of the research in the subject area reviewed (5, p. 55). A properly researched and written literature review
performs many important functions for a research project. Several sources have outlined the value that a literature
review provides to both the researcher and the reader: view, cited

Industry & Company Profile

History of Prasanna Purple Mobility Solution Private Limited
Prasanna Patwardhan, Chairman & Managing Director of Prasanna Purple, was once a sportsman – he was captain of
the Maharashtra basketball team and represented the country as well - and this reflects in his stately persona even
today.
The company was named after him by his father and today Prasanna runs three companies: The parent company
Prasanna Purple Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (Intercity & City Bus Passenger Transport, Corporate & School
Mobility, Domestic & International Holiday Packages), and two sister concerns, Prasanna Transport Network Pvt.
Ltd. (Goods Transport) and Smilestone Motels Pvt. Ltd.
Prasanna Purple’s partner in all this is Ambit Pragma, a private equity firm that invested in it in 2009 and owns 64%
of the parent company.
In 2010, Prasanna Travels, which was the name of the small company that started back in 1964, changed its name to
Prasanna Purple for a more modern makeover.
Prasanna Patwardhan’s story will be inspiring for those who are looking to not only take their family business
forward but also make it expand and multiply successfully.
Born in 1962 in Pune into a joint family, Prasanna grew up with 24 people under one roof. His upbringing was like
any typical middle-class Maharashtrian family and, after studying in Nutan Marathi School and graduating in science
from Fergusson, he did his post-graduation in management from Symbiosis.
“My uncles had a restaurant and dairy business,” says Prasanna. “Their restaurant Wadeshwar has many branches
now but when I was young there was only one.”
His father used to run a taxi service and his only client was the Pune University that would use the taxis for its
professors and visiting faculty. “We made a decent earning out of that,” says Prasanna.
Keshav Waman Patwardhan, his father, was in turn the sole contractor of Pune University so all the business went to
him.
"In 1985, the University’s Vice Chancellor told the professors to carpool instead of using taxis,” recalls Prasanna,
“and said they would call for our taxis only when they really needed it. This really affected our business. We had no
other client.”
This was a bad time for Prasanna Travels and they were on the verge of shutting down. The sudden drop in business
meant a sharp decline in the family income.
“This is when I realized I needed to step in to help,” says Prasanna, who completed his management degree that year.
From December 1985, he started working at Prasanna Travels to help his father plan the way ahead.
This was not what Prasanna had planned for in life. He had wanted to become a sportsman – he had represented India
in basketball and was the captain, and later coach, of the Maharashtra team. A knee injury, however, kept him away
from a future in sports.
“If I would have continued as a sportsperson then all this wouldn’t have happened and I would’ve probably have
become a TC (ticket collector) in the railways at the end of my career,” laughs Prasanna, calling the injury a blessing
in disguise.
As Prasanna entered his father’s business, the first thing he did was renovate the office and spruce up the Fiat and
Ambassador cars they had.
"It took six months to rebuild everything and I spent around Rs 5,000 per car to include things like air conditioner,
curtains, music system, uniform for the drivers plus water and newspaper in every car,” remembers Prasanna about
his first year. “Earlier only university professors used our cars but now we were looking for corporate clients.”
With the revamped cars and a new client-base that Prasanna built one by one, the turnover for Prasanna Travels
doubled and tripled – it went from Rs 3 lakh per annum in 1985 to Rs 10 crore in the next 10 years, by 1995.
“I was a management student so I had knowledge about the business aspect but to build clients was the difficult
part,” says Prasanna about the struggles of the early days. “I used to walk into any office and ask them if they wanted
our taxi service, or I would give my card to the watchman of a company hoping that he would give it to the right
person.”
His first client was Philips, and then Telco, and then the business started snowballing and many respectable names
joined the client list. Every year the turnover would double and he would buy new cars and tempos.
In 1988, Prasanna started his first bus service, investing Rs 10 lakh in an air-conditioned bus. He sold four cars and
two tempos out of the 25 taxis and six tempos Prasanna Travels had acquired by this time.
"We started a Mahabaleshwar to Pune bus service but it failed,” recalls Prasanna. “Then I entered into a partnership
with Jalgaon's Sangitam Travels and we started a Pune-Jalgaon service – we had one bus from our side (Pune) and
one from Sangitam (Jalgaon) – and this arrangement worked. We earned a good profit.”
In the next four years, Prasanna started other routes like Kolhapur-Pune, Akola-Pune, and Bangalore-Pune. Soon the
bus service became the main business for Prasanna Travels, and in 2009 they got investment from Ambit Pragma.
That year Prasanna also entered into a public-private partnership (PPP) with civic authorities in Jalgaon
(Maharashtra) and Indore (Madhya Pradesh) to run intercity bus services.
Soon, Prasanna Travels spread their business to 10 cities including Pune, Ludhiana, Delhi and Ahmednagar under the
Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission that allows private-public sector partnerships.
These days, the majority of his revenue comes from shorter, intercity bus services, as for longer routes people prefer
to fly.
“With intercity, we provide the driver and the conductor is provided by the state government and the business is
profitable,” says Prasanna. “But now with toll taxes and rising petrol/diesel prices, the profit is taking a hit.”
What shines through his story is Prasanna’s spirit. He never treated any work as too low for himself and always took
initiative and ownership of the task at hand.
"In 1988 I once drove my bus to Jalgaon for three days as no driver was available,” he recalls. “The bus had to reach
Jalgaon as we had confirmed passengers so I took charge as the driver. With my life their lives were on stake too, but
these are all part of challenges you face when you run your own company.”
He wasn’t a bus driver but had learnt to drive a bus in his spare time from his drivers. “Today I have 3,000 drivers
but that day I had none,” smiles Prasanna.
Prasanna Purple trains its drivers and has opened driving school, too. They have also started the ‘Hop On Hop Off’
tourist bus services in Goa and in Delhi. Soon they are hoping to get one started in Mumbai with BEST (Bombay
Electric Supply and Transport Corporation), but as of now the decision is on hold.
Prasanna has visited several countries and thinks public transport in India has the potential to reach international
standards.
"Our government doesn't give that much attention to public transport, which should be a priority,” he says. “People
should use it more often instead of cars.”
Prasanna wants to use more technology in their business, and provide customers with advanced services like GPS
tracking.
He got married in 1986 to Monica and they have two sons. Their elder son Saurabh takes care of the company’s
cargo business while his other son, Harshavardhan, has a footwear manufacturing business of his own.
Today Prasanna travels the world whenever he gets the time to survey the public transport systems of other countries,
so that he can update the services in India too.
He has learnt most of business tactics from sports where nobody is a permanent enemy or friend.
“Though I don't play basketball anymore, it taught me a lot in life,” he says. “When I was playing for Maharashtra
other state player were my enemies but then at the national level they were my teammates so they became friends.”

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research methodology is the process used to collect information and data for the purpose of making business
decisions. The methodology may include publication research, interviews, surveys and other research
techniques.

Research Design
A research design serves as a bridge between what has been established (the research objectives) and how to
accomplish these objectives. In fact, the research design is the conceptual structure within which research is
conducted; it constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement and analysis of data. More explicitly, the
design decisions happen to be in respect of:
i) What is the study about?
ii) Why is the study being made?
iii) Where will the study be carried out?
iv) What type of data is required?
v) Where can be the required data found?
vi) What period of time will the study include?
vii) What will be the sample design?
viii) What technique of data collection will be used?
ix) How will the data be analyzed?
x) In what style will the report be prepared?

The function of research design is to provide for the collection of relevant evidence with minimal expenditure of
effort, time and money. But how all these can be achieved depends mainly on the research purpose.
Research Type:

In this report I have used Descriptive research technique.

Descriptive research includes surveys and fact-finding enquiries of different kinds. The major purpose of
descriptive research is description of the state of affairs as it exists at present. The main characteristic of this
method is that the researcher has no control over the variables.

Sampling Design:

For my survey I have used Convenience sampling technique.

Convenience sampling is a non-probability sampling technique where subjects are selected because of their
convenient accessibility and proximity to the researcher.

SAMPLE SIZE - Sample of 50 Companies were taken in order to conduct the research.

UNIVERSE - In accordance to the specified research universe is Pune city.

recorded by the respondents.
 Through Personal Interaction – In personal interaction an interviewer ask questions in a face to
face contact to the other person.

SECONDARY DATA is the data which are available in the form of fact and figures. The sources of secondary
data are:
