CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter interprets, analyses, and presents data about the Cases of Suicide

attempts among the students of University of Batangas: A basis for mental health

awareness program.

situations.
Personal issues 4 R5: Perhaps some of the
reasons could be
relationships with
significant others, parents,
sibling and other relevant
person who are very close
to concerned individual.
R6: Family, friends, and
school pressure.

Table 1 represents the common reason why students commit suicide, 2

respondents answered that one of the common reasons why students attempt

suicide was Mental illness like depression and anxiety. Another 4 respondents

answered Personal issues like family problems, relationship problems, and etc.

According to Childrenshospital.org(2008), Research shows that

approximately 90% of people who have died by suicide were suffering from a

mental illness at the time. The most common mental illness reported was

depression. Impulsivity and substance use, including alcohol and drugs, also

warning signs for elevated suicide risk. It is important to remember that suicidal

thoughts and behaviors are not the natural consequence of serious life stresses.

People who experience a stressful life event may feel intense sadness or loss,

anxiety, anger, or hopelessness, and may occasionally have the thought that they

would be better off dead. In most people, however, experiences of stressful life

events do not trigger recurring thoughts of death, creation of a suicide plan, or

intent to die. If any of these are present, it suggests that the person is suffering

from depression or another psychiatric disorder and should seek professional

treatment.

Table 2 represents the ways on how should the school/University address

the issue on suicide attempt, one respondent answered that promoting mental

health should address to lessen the issue within the school/University. Three

respondents answered that the most effective way or address to lessen the suicide

attempt is to spread awareness. And 2 out of 10 respondents answered that

socializing is the key to lessen the case of suicide attempt.

According to Mental Health America(2001), believes that all children and

families should have access to the support they need throughout early childhood

to give future generations the best possible start in life. Although diagnosable

mental health and substance use conditions are often identified with adolescence,

37
early life, approximately from birth to age eight, is a time of critical brain

development that plays a substantial role in establishing predispositions for

behavioral health conditions later in life. To ensure that each child has the best

chance to live a mentally healthy life, and to reduce overall costs to society.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to

share resources and stories in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and

stigmatized topic. We use this month to reach out to those affected by suicide,

raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment

services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have

access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention.

Helping someone who is suicidal may seem like a difficult task. While

helping to potentially save a life is of utmost importance in this situation, knowing

the right steps to take is crucial to providing effective help for a friend or loved one

in crisis. You can start simply by paying attention to warning signs, talking openly

about suicide, and letting them know you are there for them. You may be the key

factor in connecting this person to a professional who can help them through this

painful time.

unable to find answer in
handling their situation.

Table 3 represents the main cause on why students attempted suicide

based on the observations of the respondents. Three of them answered that the

main cause of attempted suicide is related to mental health. Two respondents

39
answered disconnection to people. Another respondents answered having

sensitive feeling towards everything.

According to Health line.com(2002), about 90% of people who attempt

suicide have a mental illness. Depression is the top risk factor but there various

other mental health disorder that can contribute to attempted suicide, including

bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

People who have suicidal thoughts are often so overwhelmed by feelings of

sadness and hopelessness that they think they have no other option.

According to Mentalhealth.org(2018), people with a diagnosed mental

health condition are show to be at higher risk of attempting suicide and suicide

attempts have been found associated with depressive disorder.

How did the students who attempt suicide overcome their tendencies?

Theme Frequency Response

R1: Personal support will

do.
R3: By having a support
group of people who will
stay by their side anytime
they need someone to rely
on.
Social support 3 R4: Students, simply need
to talk and supporting them.
They have to share what is
going on around them and
help them think, process
their thoughts, emotions,
and feel them like that you
care about them.

R2: They take medicine for
that.

alertness and relaxation.

Table 4 represents how did the students who attempt suicide overcome their

tendencies? 3 respondents answered social support to overcome their tendencies.

2 respondents answered treatments to overcome their tendencies. Another 1

respondent answered school support to overcome their tendencies.

According to Okun & Keith (1998), social support and strain were

differentiated by partner, family, and friends. This allowed us to examine the impact

of source specific support and strain on outcomes, and to examine the joint, or

buffering, effects of positive and negative social exchanges. (Antonucci &

Jackson, 1987; Cohen & Wills, 1985), studies examining measures of well-being

(e.g., depression, overall happiness, life satisfaction) have concluded that social

support is emotionally beneficial (Cohen & Wills, 1985, for a review). Further, a

relationship between supportive social networks and physical health is also well

documented (House, Landis, & Umberson, 1988, for a review). While the

relationship between support and well-being is likely reciprocal, in that people who

are healthy and happy may elicit positive social relations, a growing number of

41
longitudinal studies support the concept that positive social networks lead to

increased well-being and health (Eaton, 1978; Seeman et al., 1995).

Treatment is the act or manner or an instance of treating someone or

something; the techniques or actions customarily applied in a specified situation;

a substance or technique used in treating; experimental condition (Merriam

Webster).

According to Small et al., (1995), school mental health services as a

"coordinated system that ensures a continuum of care from school to home to

community health care provider and back". The goals and program elements of

school health services vary at the state, community, school district, and individual

school levels. Some of the factors that contribute to these variations include

student needs, community resources for health care, available funding, local

preference, leadership for providers of school mental health services, and the view

of mental health services held by school administrators and other key

decisionmakers in the school systems. (Parish, 1996), it is surprising that so little

attention has been given to the effectiveness of school programs targeted toward

prevention, reduction, or treatment of mental health problems.

The most effective interventions are integrated into the learning

environment (Rones & Hoagwood, 2000) and encourage the adults in the school

community to support and reinforce mental health goals through parent and

teacher education and consultation. Mental health services, including follow-up

and monitoring, are most effectively provided in the child's natural setting, school

and home, and will therefore require collaboration among all the adults in the

42
child's life (Kazak et al., 2010 by encouraging the school counselor to focus on the

student's social and emotional needs so that barriers to learning can be removed.

Table 1 represents on how to help lessen the cases of suicide attempts. 3

of the respondents answered that providing seminar and programs will help lessen

the cases of suicide attempts. 2 of the respondents answered that home visit and

have a personal conversation with the students. The last respondents answered

that advocating and happiness and positive mind and make sure that you give

yourself time not only on your problems.

According to Mark(2019), all respondents were given various opinions and

skills in this study. Just like they can make programs and seminar to lessen the

suicide attempts it will also help because there are possibilities to change the mind

and the sense of the person those who experiencing it. It also for the mental health

because it is a good idea to affect it. But the important of this 6 respondents they

have a differentiate and same opinion on our study that will help to lessen the

cases of suicide attempts

Based on the study Callahan J.(1996), In recent years, a general consensus

has emerged regarding postvention activities in schools following completed

suicides of teenagers. In this case study, standard postvention activities were

carried out in a middle school after two youths from the same neighborhood

44
committed suicide 3 months apart. Soon thereafter, a substantial increase in

suicidal talk, threats, and attempts took place. Inadvertently, some of the

postvention activities appeared to contribute to the romanticization and glorification

of the deaths. Changes in postvention practices were made in order to defuse the

atmosphere of "romantic tragedy," which in turn led to a decrease in suicidal

behavior.
