Chapter I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

A good education has the ability of changing lives. It is making us capable

of competing and learning in a global workplace. By which the 21st century turned

around the system of education in many aspects. There is so much to be done and

discovered in terms of education. There are a lot of things to improve to create effective

learners.

Education is the one which guides the students to their path towards their own

successes. It helps students to value the knowledge they gain and try to change

someone’s perspective about how life works. Schooling provides contentment and

happiness to every student who has the proper education attainment. In this world and in

this time, every person needs to have a higher educational attainment for them to be

accepted by the society that they are in. It develops confidence and helps to develop

personality because schooling teaches students to know their selves deeper and probably

become an asset of the society.

In line with this, academic achievements are also as important as being an asset to

the society. The students’ performance (academic achievement) plays an important role

in producing the best quality graduates who will become great leader and manpower for

the country thus responsible for the country’s economic and social development (Ali

et.al, 2009). Whereas the importance of educational systems would not be great without

the students being shaped into proper educational practices. Thus factors such as

environmental, psychological and personal aspects could strongly affect the students’

performance. On the other hand, these would also depend on the situation where the

students belong and the habits they build in getting a good academic performance.

However, building study habits or being self-regulated would also help student to

get a better academic performance. Self- regulated learning plays an important role in the

students’ academic performance as it serves as a motivation to many. This is a cycle

wherein the students independently plan and assess their learning habit whereas only few

students do this well as it requires courage to successfully create one. Self-regulation is

essential to the learning process as it help students make better learning habits and build

up their study skills. There is also some application of different learning strategies to

enhance academic outcomes and evaluate their academic progress as learners.

One important aspect of self-regulation is proper time management which is the

root of everything. Time management is the skill in which all students should not only

know, but also need to know how to apply. Faisal, Abdulla, Mohammad, & Nabil (2014).

It's useless if students only know how to do it. Students have a lot of tasks and have to

satisfy a lot of different lecturers. Faisal, et al (2014) stated that there are a lot of students

who are unsuccessful in academic facing difficulties in their time management and

complaint that they do not have sufficient time to perform certain task. Due to

inefficiency in time management and not able to meet the timeline, they get frustrated

and stressed. There is an increasing number of studies mentioned that time management

is related to student’ academic performance significantly. According to Olowookere et al.

(2015), students’ improper time management is related to lower academic achievement.

Behaviors like inappropriate time allocation, participating in unnecessarily activities that

consume time, spending a lot of time on social networks and last minute preparation for

examination, have caused a huge interruption for students and are often discussed as one

of the main reasons for low academic performance (Faisal et al, 2014). Once these

actions continue, it could lead into a worst scenario wherein lack of proper time

management took over which is known as procrastination.

At some point of time in our lives, procrastination has been an impulse that

affects merely everyone. Its occurrence has existed from the past and continuously

increased in the 21st century. Procrastination is the act of delaying an intended action

which commonly results to uncomfortably completing tasks. This is considered as a

negative course of action especially when it is academic-related. Academic

procrastination is an existing problem to a large number of students which involves their

school related works such as homework, projects and studying for examinations.

According to the Department of Organizational Psychology in Columbia University, New

York, USA, academic procrastination causes the students to be paralyzed by their

indecisions to act and fail to complete task on time. The students who undergo with this

struggle are called passive procrastinators. As considered effects, Rozental A., et

al(2015) stated that procrastination has been shown to be associated with increased stress

and anxiety, exacerbation of illness and poorer performance in school and work.

The initial discussion serves as a reason for the researchers to conduct a

study about the academic procrastination that is being experienced by senior high school

students. Procrastination has been and is still a tough struggle that students of today’s

century face as part of academic learning. Being able to find out the effects of academic

procrastination to the students’ efficacy and efficiency is considered significant because it

can be a bridge that will help the students to find the solution and right practices to

accomplish so that they can be free from the negative effects of it. At the same time, the

researchers chose to study about academic procrastination among Filipino senior high

school students to prove or disprove the outputs of previous studies conducted out of the

same topic.

Statement of the Problem

This study dealt with academic procrastination among Filipino senior high school

students. Also, this study aims to know how the students perceive with its effect in their

academic works in terms of efficacy and efficiency.

Specifically, this sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age

1.2 strand

1.3 level of academic procrastination

2. What are the reasons why students procrastinate?

3. How do students perceive the effect of procrastination in academic works in terms of:

3.1 efficacy

3.2 efficiency

4. Is there a significant relationship between the respondent’s profile and their perception

on the effects of procrastination to academic works?

5. What course of action can be proposed to promote proper time management among

students?

Scope and Delimitation

This quantitative research aims to know the effects of procrastination to the

students in Senior High School in Malvar. It will also determine how students perceive its

effects in terms of efficacy and efficiency in their academic works.

The respondents of the study will be 304 students from Senior High School in

Malvar, Batangas. Moreover, the time framed for this study is the school year 2019-2020.

This study will not include the effects procrastination to other senior high school

students and other senior high schools. At the same time, it will not include the gender of

the participants as a basis for the output since the participants will be chosen randomly

disregarding their gender. Moreover, this study will not deal with how students have

proper time management. These limitations will not weaken the findings of this study but

serve as a starting point for future researchers by providing factors that others should

consider when conducting a similar research.

Significance of the Study

This study aims to understand the effects of procrastination to Filipino senior high

school students. In addition, the study also aims to understand how students perceive the

effects of procrastination in academic works in terms of efficacy and efficiency. This

study is considered beneficial to the Department of Education, administration, teachers,

parents, students and future researchers.

This research will benefit the Department of Education for they can consider the

research as a basis towards improvement of the educational system in the Philippines.

The results of this study may help them to create strategic methods such as including the

introduction of the effects of procrastination to the students in as earlier as possible as

part of their lessons so that the students can learn to avoid such negative practice.

The information that can be accumulated in this study can be useful to the

administration for their awareness about academic procrastination among students will

become wider so as them being able to think about methods that will lessen such

uncertainty will become more attainable.

This study is significant for teachers because through this, they will be able to

know the effects of procrastination to their students. At the same time, they will know

such practices that will help their students to avoid or lessen procrastination. This will

also help them enhance and improve their way of teaching for the students to retain their

lessons more.

This study is important to parents because through this research, they will have a

background on what their children are facing at school. They will be more supportive of

their children and they will understand what their children are feeling that will benefit

both sides.

This study will help those who are the subject of this research and the students

who are experiencing procrastinatuon. This study will help the students be aware of the

effects of procrastination in terms of efficacy and efficiency in academic works. In

addition, this study will improve students' time management.

This study will also be beneficial to future researchers. Underlying ideas and

theories may be a reference data that is possible for future use or in testing validity in

other related findings. This study will also serve as a reference that will give them a

background regarding the effects of procrastination and how to cope up with it.
