Pakistan and Bangladesh
BY SUMIT CHAKRABERTY

While Pakistan’s chances of making it to the semis were virtually snuffed out by England’s victories over India and
New Zealand, Bangladesh’s hopes were dashed by India on Tuesday. When the two Asian teams play their last
game of the World Cup at Lord’s on Friday, they will rue the opportunities they missed to make it to the final.

VITAL STATS
PAKISTAN BANGLADESH
Ranking 6 7
Head-to-head World Cup wins 0 1
Head-to-head wins in the last 5 ODIs 6 4

1 Hopes dashed
Pakistan had rekindled their hopes of qualifying for the semi-
finals after beating New Zealand and Afghanistan. A win in their last
game against Bangladesh will take them to 11 points. England had lost to
Sri Lanka and Australia. Another defeat, to either India or New Zealand, would
have limited them to 10 points. But that wasn’t to be. New Zealand lost badly
to England, but Pakistan would be peeved that India appeared to give up the
chase too soon with five wickets in hand. Despite the big loss to England,
New Zealand’s huge wins over Sri Lanka and Afghanistan should keep
their net run rate out of reach even if they are tied on points with
Pakistan.

2 Pakistan have themselves to blame

Honest introspection will show that Pakistan have themselves to
blame more than other teams not helping them out. Their disastrous
start, when they got bowled out for 105 by the West Indies, destroyed
their net run rate. They were unlucky to have their game against Sri
Lanka which they would have expected to win—washed out, but were
lucky to eke out a win over Afghanistan by the narrowest of margins.
Pakistan recorded great wins over England and New Zealand, but took too
long to fix their team selection by dropping Shoaib Malik and Hasan Ali.

3 Bangladesh’s big miss

Bangladesh’s narrow loss to New Zealand hurt them the most.
They were playing the Kiwis at The Oval—a venue where they had
racked up 330 and beaten South Africa. This time, however, they
made only 244 after the untimely dismissal of Shakib Al Hasan, who
was caught behind off part-time bowler Colin de Grandhomme.
They did fight all the way, taking eight Kiwi wickets on a pitch that
was offering turn. But here’s where skipper Mashrafe Mortaza
missed a trick. He switched to medium pace instead of completing
the quota of spinner Mosaddek Hossain who had taken an
impressive 2 for 33 in 8 overs.

4 Mortaza on his last legs

The 35-year-old Mortaza has led the team well and deserves
credit for making Bangladesh serious contenders. But he’s clearly on
his last legs, hobbling on the field with his slow medium pace and
unable to contribute much with the bat. At this level, a team cannot
afford to carry a passenger, however much he contributes as a leader.
Perhaps a stronger bowler than Mortaza might have served Bangladesh
better in a couple of close games.

5 Shakib’s world record

Shakib Al Hasan has been the biggest sensation of this World Cup. In the
game against India, he became the first player in the history of the
tournament to cross 500 runs and take 10 wickets. He has always been a canny Mashrafe
left-arm spinner. Now, it’s his batting that has reached new heights after he Mortaza
moved up to the number three position. He appears to have taken a leaf out of AP

Virat Kohli’s book in maintaining a good run rate with risk-free shots and
pouncing on any opportunity to hit a boundary. He should be leading the
Bangladesh team.

India needs to create not only more jobs but also decent ones for its growing labour force, a point academics, workers’ unions
and international bodies such as ILO and the World Bank have emphasized in recent times. The Economic Survey has
proposed the implementation of a national mandatory minimum wage that will help reduce poverty and distress migration.
