a) a straight line passes through the points (2, -5/2) and (-2, 11/2)

(i) The gradient of the line or slope can be found dividing the change in Y by the change in X
therefore in this case

11 5 16
2 − −2 8
𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 = = 2 = − = −2
−2 − 2 −4 4

(ii) To find the equation of the line passing through the two points we use all informations that
we have:
1) it is a straight line therefore it must follow the generic straight line equation : y = ax + b
2) The point (2, 5/2) is a solution of the line equation
3) The point (-2, 11/2) is a solution of the line equation

Therefore we put the values of X and Y of the points in the generic equation and solve a
system of two equations:

11/2 = -2a + b
-5/2 = 2a + b

11 = -4a + 2b
-5 = 4a + 2b

b = (11+4a)/2
-5 = 4a +11 + 4a

b=(11+4a)/2
-16 = 8a

b=(11+4a)/2
a=-2

b=(11-8)/2 = 3/2
a=-2

Therefore the equation of this line is : y= -2x + (3/2)

(iii) The x-intercept is the point of the line where y is 0, therefore to find it we just solve
-2x + 3/2 = 0
-4x +3 = 0
x=¾
The x-intercept is at the point ( 3/4 ,0 )
b) does the line y = -2x +3 intersect with the line we found in a) ?

Two line intersect if there is one point that belongs to both lines. Therefore to find out we can write
a system with the two line equations and see if they have a solution in common

y = -2x +3
y= -2x + (3/2)

y = -2x +3
-2x +3 = -2x + (3/2)

y= -2x +3
+3 = +(3/2)

Since 3 ≠ The two equation don’t have a solution in common and therefore the two
lines never intersect.

c) Same as before, to find the coordinates where the line intersec we just have to write a system of
equation and solve it in order to see if there are solutions in common.

-2x + y = -6
4x + 8y = 32

y = 2x -6
4x + 16x -48 = 32

y= 2x -6
20x = 80

y= 2x -6
x=4

y= 8-6 = 2
x=4

The point (4,2) is the point where the lines intersect.

d)

(i)
The y-intercept of the parabola is the point in wich x=0 :therefore:
y = 0 +0 +2 = 2
The y-intercept is (0,2)
(ii)
(1)
Substituting x=20 we find the coordinates of the point where the line x=20 meets the
parabola:
y = -0.02(400) + 20 + 2 = -8 + 20 + 2 = 14
The point in wich the line meets the parabola is (20,14)
(2)
What we found in the previous question means that when the ball is 20m from
Dominic (on the X) it is at an height of 14m from the ground (on the Y) therefore the
balls goes higher than a tree of height 8.5m that stands 20m from Dominic ( 14 > 8.5)

(iii)
(1)
The X-intercepts of the parabola are the points for wich y=0 (since the parabola is a 2nd
grade equations we can instantaneously see that there are 2 of this points )
to find them we just have to solve the equation:

−0.02𝑥 + 𝑥 + 2 = 0

0.02𝑥 − 𝑥 − 2 = 0

∆ = 1 + (4 ∗ 2 ∗ 0.02) = 1.16

1 − √1.16 1 − 1.077 −0.077

𝑥 = = = = −1.925 ~ − 1.92
2 ∗ 0.02 0.04 0.04
1 + √1.16 1 + 1.077 2.077
𝑥 = = = = 51.925 ~ 51.92
2 ∗ 0.02 0.04 0.04

The x-intercepts are the points: (-1.92 , 0) and (51.92 , 0)

(2)
from part (d)(i) we know that the ball leaves the throwing stick at x=0
and from part (d)(iii)(1) we know that the ball has height equal to zero in two points
(-1.92,0) and (51.92 , 0 ) but we are interested in the one with x>0 because the ball
leaves the throwing stick at x=0 (we are not interested in what the balls does before
being thrown) therefore the point where the ball lands (y=0) is at 51.92 meters from
where it leaves the throwing stick.
