Programme outline Application deadline 2020-2021
1 March (for non-EEA citizens)
The first year consists of electrical and mechanical engineering courses, as well as several techno-economic, energy- 1 June (for EEA citizens)
related subjects and integrated problem solving and project work.
How to apply
In the second year, your specialisation is developed by, amongst others, writing a master's thesis on a subject related to www.kuleuven.be/application
electrical energy, thermomechanical energy, techno-economic aspects, or a combination. You can also participate in an
international exchange or do an internship. Tuition fee 2019-2020
€938.80 for EEA students
Specialisation options: €6,000 for non-EEA students
Thermomechanical energy: emphasis on the mechanical aspects of energy supply and ‘energy machines and Most recent information on
systems’. www.kuleuven.be/tuitionfees
Electrical energy: emphasis on the electrical-power aspects of energy supply and energy conversion.
General techno-economic energy: a broader specialisation, with a focus on non-technical aspects (economy, markets, Chat with our students
legal framework, environment) Student Ambassadors
KU Leuven uses an online application system. You can submit your application form via www.kuleuven.be/application.
Students with a Flemish degree can consult www.kuleuven.be/studentenadministratie.

Profile
Admission requirements
Objectives
2. Proficiency in research
- The graduate is capable of structuring realistic problems (of a more complex nature) as a research question, designing a
research plan, developing innovative solutions and synthetizing. He thereby considers the limits of the system.
- The graduate is able to choose the appropriate level of abstraction on a component, device and system level, given the
process stage of the research problem.
- The graduate is capable of and has the attitude to integrate related energy systems and other disciplines where needed
in his own research.
3. Competent in designing
- The graduate can design energy components and systems with an eye for the dynamic interaction between individual
components in a global system.
- The graduate can deal with changeability of the designing process by external circumstances, such as social tendencies
or political decisions, or advancing insight. He can adjust this process based on these circumstances.
4. Scientific approach
- The graduate can critically examine existing theories, models or interpretations in the field of energy.
- The graduate can use, develop and validate models and experimental techniques and is able to make an informed choice
between modelling and measuring methods.
- The graduate possesses the skills and knows the techniques to become more proficient in his technical field throughout
his entire life. He knows the sources of information, recognizes their value and knows how to apply them in new
circumstances. He also possesses the skills to continue to develop in non-technical elements of the field of energy, such
as economic, environmental and regulatory aspects.
Career perspectives
This master's degree is the ideal preparation for a career in the techno-industrial environment, both nationally and globally,
where your knowledge of energy technologies combined with a thorough appreciation of global environmental problems
and sustainability and economic concerns is sure to be in high demand.
● system integration
Senior engineers generally gravitate towards managementfunctions in industry and policy making, or act as expertleaders
in engineering and consultancy practice.
During your bachelor's and master's programme you can already shape your own profile by choosing a certain
specialisation, studying abroad (Erasmus), doing a work placement, or starting your own business.
The Student Career Centre is happy to put you on the right track towards your first work experience. The centre also
coaches you in the search for an interesting job and helps you with job interviews. For students wanting to start their own
business KU Leuven also has Lcie, the KU Leuven community that encourages students with innovative and
entrepreneurial ideas.
Don’t know where to start? The Student Career Centre's databases contain offers for jobs, volunteer work, innovation
projects and student jobs. You can also visit one of the events organised by the Career Centre.

In the context of the wellbeing law certain data must be stored for each student and they must be informed timely on the
subject of:
the risks to which the student is exposed during the study programme (practicals, traineeships, master's theses,…)
the associated preventive measures for each risk, such as medical follow-up, personal protective equipment and
instructions.
The risks and preventive measures are collected in the HSE-file for students. Through this link you can consult the HSE-
file. The HSE-file will be used for traineeships and/or master’s theses. For more information about traineeships, we refer to
the following site: traineeship.. For questions, please contact the HSE Department.
