Background
The ASEAN New Zealand Youth Conference 2019 (#ANZYC19) aims to promote greater
awareness of ASEAN and its flourishing relations with New Zealand among Kiwi youth. It
intends to present opportunities for youth engagement, study and careers in ASEAN-New
Zealand relations. It will also introduce the participants to the Youth Ambassador
(#YAMBA) programme, of which the ANZYC is a core component.
The Conference is among the key projects of the ASEAN Committee in Wellington (ACW)
currently chaired by the Ambassador of the Philippines, and was an initiative of the
Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017. The ACW comprises of the resident missions
in Wellington of Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The first Conference in 2017 was held at St. Patrick’s College, Kilburnie, and the second
at Palmerston North Girls’ High School in 2018.
Through the Conference’s presentations and group discussions, students will have the
opportunity to interact, dialogue, and learn with diplomats, academicians and researchers.
The Conference also intends to provide students with a forum for interaction, networking
and leadership development.
The event is open to all Colleges / High Schools in the Wellington and surrounding
regions. In addition to the ACW, the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hutt City, and the
Asia New Zealand Foundation will be invited to send speakers.
The AWC is grateful that Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt (SHC) has generously
offered to serve as host and venue for #ANZYC19, and pleased that Ms. Sophia Nem, a
Year 13 SHC Student and Cambodian-Kiwi, will serve as its Secretary-General.
