CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

First of all, you’ll need more than a high school diploma to land a job in business

administration. At the very minimum, an associate’s degree in business will prime

you for entry level positions in the field. Earning a bachelor’s will advance your

knowledge with skills of organizational leadership, managing people and strategic

planning. With a bachelor’s under your belt, you’ll qualify for a variety of business roles

right out of school.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES (In General)

Many people choose to continue their education by earning a Master in Business

Administration (MBA), a highly respected advanced degree that indicates a commitment

to leading in the field. Your master’s will usually take one to two years to obtain.

Top executives may complete a certification program through the Institute of Certified

Professional Managers to earn the Certified Manager (CM) credential. To become a CM,

candidates must meet education and experience requirements and pass three exams.

Although not mandatory, certification can show management competency and potential

leadership skills. Certification also can help those seeking advancement or can give job

seekers a competitive edge.

7
Depending on the type of business field you enter, there may be additional certifications

to earn. For example, the International Facility Management Association offers a

competency-based professional certification program for administrative services

managers. Completing the program may give prospective job candidates a competitive

advantage.

THE PROFESSION

EDUCATIONAL PATHWAY

There are many opportunities, both in high school and through previous college, work,

and/or military experience, to earn credit at Gateway. You can enter your career field at

any point along the pathway and advance as you complete higher-level credentials.

Gateway’s Career and Employment Services offers many resources to assist students and

alumni with their job search.

Transfer credits to 4-year colleges and universities via general credit transfer, associate

degree transfer, and program-to-program transfer agreements.

8
PROFESSIONAL PATHWAY

take the first step toward making that life possible with a business administration

degree. You’ll take just one 5- or 6-week class at a time, building on your knowledge

foundation and taking core requirements and electives that suit your personal needs. You

may be able to transfer eligible credits for classes previously taken. You can have

relevant work experience evaluated for potential credit. Most online business

administration degrees have the option to tailor your program with additional certificates.

Our Bachelor of Science in Business, Master of Business Administration and Doctor of

Business Administration degrees have been reaffirmed for accreditation until 2027 by the

Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), ensuring the quality

of your education.

Whether you earn your business administration degree online or on-campus, you’ll learn

from programs built for adult learners, taught by faculty who have cumulative experience

in a variety of leadership positions — including c-level executives, presidents and vice

presidents. The online business administration degree components allow you the

flexibility you need to balance your education with your work and home life — access

your coursework anywhere with an internet connection.

Terminologies

Accounts Payable

Simply put, an accounts payable report gives you an overview of what your business

owes for supplies, inventory, and services. A quick glance at this report reveals the

identities of your creditors, how much money is owed to each creditor, and how long that

money has been owed

Assets

Every business has assets, which in their simplest terms are things of value. All

businesses need assets to produce products or sell services. An asset is anything a

business owns.

B2B

A B2B business is one that offers products or services directly to other businesses. The

business can be the end buyer, such as when a company hires a copywriter (the

copywriter is the B2B business) or it can be a source of the business, such as a drop

shipper who provides products to other companies who then sell them to the end user.

The drop shipper is a B2B company.

Boil the Ocean

The common application of this phrase is to take on an overly large and potentially

impossible task given the reality of your resources. The phrase implies a lack of

connectivity to reality.

10
Cash Flow

Cash flow is the money that is moving (or flowing) in and out of a business in any given

month. Cash may be coming in from customers, or clients, who are buying products or

services. Cash may be going out in the form of payments for expenses, like rent or a

mortgage.

Continuous Improvement Plan

A continuous improvement plan is a set of activities designed to bring gradual, ongoing

improvement to products, services or processes through constant review, measurement,

and action.

GAAP

Generally accepted accounting principles (referred to as GAAP), are a set of rules and

practices having substantial authoritative support. GAAP is the standard that companies

use to compile their financial statements such as the income statement, balance sheet,

and statement of cash flow.

OBSERVATION AND INSIGHT OF PROFESSION

Being an ICT coordinator of a school isn’t that tough, But it’s the most frustrating job

that I have ever encountered. All you need is to sit in front of a computer and gather all

sorts of data from the school. It’s not that hard, but it ain’t easy as well. Sitting all day,

filling your head with lumps of data? But that job inculcated a message inside our heads.

And that thing is to persevere, carry on the job that was given to you. And most of all, ask

the lord for strength.

OVERALL REFLECTION

Our two (2) weeks of work immersion has been like a journey to our future. It

taught us a whole lot of lessons along our way. As we trailed the pathway to success,

we’ve encountered our mountains and seas. Which was the paper works, a whole bunch

of them. Instead of going over the mountains I strolled around it, not knowing that I’m

losing the pathway, until I realized that I am lost. I cried for help but my voice won’t

reach them. I continued my steps further into deep forest finding a way out without

thinking that I’m losing more of the way. Suddenly I realized that “oh.. I’m only the one

who can save myself right now..” so I turned back and followed my steps back to the feet

of the mountain and climbed it. Not knowing atop of that mountain was the sweetest sight

to see. Yes I’ve learned my lessons the hard way, but I didn’t regret any of it. It’s a

golden experience that I can tell to my future children.
