Cell Division Flash Cards

This time I have given you the question and the answer. Put the question on the lined side of the
flash card and the answer on the white side. All cards must be complete for 50 pts. on Monday.
YES YOU MUST WRITE THE ENTIRE ANSWER. If you don’t finish them come after school
to pick up a copy of the questions.

Question Answer
1. What are Homologous Chromosomes? Chromosomes that are similar, but not 100% the same.
Example Mom’s chromosome # 1 is homologous with
Dad’s chromosome # 1
2. What are replicated Chromosomes? Chromosomes that have a copy
3. What are sister chomatids? Each half of a replicated chromosome
4. What is the shape of a replicated X
chromosome?
5. What is a chromosome? A DNA molecule that codes for your genetic traits.
6. What is a centriole? An organelle that is part of cell division that has an aster
form around it and has spindle fibers attach to it.
7. What is a centromere? The structure that holds the two sister chromatids
together in a replicated chromosome.
8. What is a spindle? The structure that forms in the cell during cell division.
It is made up of individual fibers and is where the
chromosomes.
9. What is a spindle fiber? One part of the spindle
10. What is the nucleus? An organelle where the chromosomes are located
11. What is mitosis? A cell division that keeps the chromosome number
constant (the same). Ex. If you start off with 46
chromosomes you end up with two new cells that have
46 chromosomes
12. What are the phases of mitosis in Interphase
order? Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
13. What happens in interphase? It is the “normal” phase where the cell is doing normal
life functions. ***The chromosomes must replicate
during this phase before cell division can occur.
14. What happens in prophase? The chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers
15. What happens during Metaphase? The chromosomes line up down the middle of the cell.
16. What happens during Anaphase? The chromosomes (sister chromatids) split and go to the
sides of the cell.
17. What happens during Telophase? The nucleus begins to reappear and cytokinesis begins
18. What is cytokinesis? When the cytoplasm divides
19. How many chromosomes are in a 46
normal somatic (body) cell?
20. What is the pneumonic device that IPMAT
helps you remember the phases of mitosis
21. What is an aster? A “star burst” that forms around the centrioles during cell
division. It is really made of proteins.
22. What happens to the nucleus between It disappears (it really dissolves into the cytoplasm)
prophase and metaphase
