STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Bending stress and shearing stress

STRESSES IN BEAMS
Stresses in beams
□ When beam is subjected to lateral
loads it bends until either a state of
equilibrium (stresses induced in a fibres
are just below maximum permitted
values) is reached, or beam fails.
Bending stresses & Shearing stresses

□ Bending stresses are □ Shearing stresses

longitudinal stresses, are lateral or
i.e. acting parallel longitudinal stresses
to the longitudinal acting tangentially
axis of the beam, to the plane of
either tensile or reference, and are
compressive and induced by the
are induced by the application
application of shearing force
bending moment.
Bending stress
□ M = fI □ M = Bending
y moment
□ I = Moment of
□M = f = E
Inertia
I y R
□ f = Stresses due to
bending
□ y = distance from
centroid
□ R = Radius of
curvature
Shearing stress
□ τ = SAY □ S = shear force at cross-
section
It
□ A = area above the point
□ Y = distance of centroid of
the above area measured
from the centroid axis of
the section
□ I = Ixx
□ t = thickness of that point
