University Laws

1. In accepting an offer of a place at Cranfield University you are agreeing to comply with the provisions of
all the Laws of the University as may be properly issued and pertaining to registered students.

2. The Laws of the University can be found at:

http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/about/governance/corporate-governance/

An outline of guidance and information is also included in a General Student Handbook, which is issued
annually.

Payment of Tuition Fees

[1]
3. Tuition fees are payable annually in advance. Where courses or programmes extend beyond a 12
month period, tuition fees will usually be due for each year of study: unless otherwise stated clearly in
your offer letter, the tuition fee stated will be the fee due for the first year of the course or programme
and may be subject to year-on-year increases in annual tuition fee rates. The first year’s fees must be
paid on or before initial registration, unless satisfactory guarantee of payment has been provided, in the
form of a written acceptance of liability to pay from a recognised award making body, an overseas
government or a recognised employer. Your sponsor must provide written evidence of such financial
liability before you register at the University. An undertaking from a private individual is not sufficient. If
your sponsor fails to honour their commitment to pay your tuition fees, you will become personally liable
for their payment to ensure your continuing registration.

4. The tuition fee includes all fees for registration, tuition and the initial assessment during the specified
registration period. The University reserves the right to charge additional tuition fees for changes or
extensions to the registration period, and for additional or remedial tuition and assessment.

5. The tuition fee also includes membership of the Cranfield Student Association, while you are a
registered student of the University.

6. The tuition fee does not include accommodation costs, or materials required of you for your private
study.

7. Failure to pay your tuition fee may result in the early termination of studies: there is no right of appeal
against the decision of the University under these circumstances.

8. If you withdraw from your course of study, or if your registration is terminated early by the University,
you continue to be liable for all tuition fees and charges already due (i.e. for that academic year) and
are not entitled to a refund of any tuition fees already paid. You may also be liable to repay any form of
grant, bursary or other form of financial assistance already paid to you.

Other Expenses

9. You are responsible for your own living expenses, and must therefore ensure that you have secured
the necessary funding before starting your programme. Guidance on appropriate levels of living
expenses is provided in the University prospectus. No assistance from the University may be
assumed, except for bursaries as notified in writing in advance of registration.

[1]
This statement does not apply to British Military Students attending Cranfield Defence and Security as part of the Academic
Provider Contract.
10. For a small number of courses, an additional bench fee of up to £7,500 per annum may apply to the
published research tuition fee. The bench fee covers additional costs of technician support, analytical
techniques instrumentation, specific equipment, materials, facilities and/or associated materials in
certain specific disciplines or research areas.

Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights

11. The copyright and other intellectual property rights in relation to theses and other work prepared and
submitted by students in the course of their studies is assigned to and vested in the University, except
[2]
where specifically agreed otherwise in writing. Permission to publish your work will not be
unreasonably withheld.

Duration of Study

12. The dates in your offer letter indicate the “period of study” associated with the course or programme
you have applied for. For full-time students, this represents in most cases continuous study throughout
this period: for part-time students, this represents the period of time within which the University would
normally have expected you to complete all elements of the course or programme.

Please note that you will be registered with the University for longer than the defined period of study.
Your registration period may also include any approved periods of time relating to the deferment of
submission of a thesis, or any re-presentation or correction of a thesis. It will also include the period of
time between the submission of the final piece of work for assessment and confirmation of a final result.

Period of Offer

13. Except where agreed otherwise in writing, an offer of admission will remain open for 28 days only or up
to the start date of the programme whichever is earlier.

Withdrawal of Offer

14. The University reserves the right to withdraw this offer if any of the information provided by you at the
point of offer is found to be incorrect or incomplete, or if you fail to provide information or evidence
which confirms that you can meet one or more of the conditions contained in this letter. The University
may also withdraw this offer if it unexpectedly is unable to provide the course of study for the dates
specified in the offer letter.

Right to Cancel and Duration of Contract

15. You are reminded of your right to cancel your acceptance of this offer within ten working days of
formally accepting it. For the purposes of the Distance Selling Regulations, it is necessary for the
University to confirm, and for you to agree, that the contract may not be performed within a thirty-day
period beginning the day after you accept our offer of admission; it will be performed at the advertised
dates (subject to the disclaimer below – paragraphs 22-23).

Registration of doctoral students

16. The University reserves the right to include within your registration a formal review process to identify
your aptitude to study for a doctorate. This may include either a probationary period, where you are
initially registered for a Masters level award (typically an MPhil), or the right to transfer you from a
doctoral award to a Masters level award on evidence of failure to make appropriate academic progress.

Proof of Identity and Qualifications

17. On registration, you must provide proof of your identity, which is normally limited to your passport, or
original birth certificate with a form of photo identification. You must also provide proof of your right to
study in the United Kingdom, and proof of your academic and professional qualifications.

Data Protection

18. All personal information obtained by the University both from yourself and other sources will be used to
process this offer and (if you register as a student of Cranfield University) to manage your student
record and student experience.

[2]
In the case of programmes that are part of the Academic Provider Contract the Intellectual Property Rights are normally
assigned to and vested in the Ministry of Defence.
19. The University will share the information internally as appropriate and may share the information with
your previous examining bodies. In the case of international applicants, the University will share the
information with the UK Border Agency, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and other relevant
agencies. The University may pass this information as appropriate to these and other outside
organisations, including the police, government, and other institutions in order to prevent or detect
fraud.

20. Your information may also be used by the University to undertake research or to plan or improve our
services. In addition, the University may advise you of other study opportunities and services provided
by us and partner organisations. If you do not wish to receive this information, please contact
enquiries@cranfield.ac.uk

21. For students who register at, or attend, the Shrivenham campus of the University, you should be aware
that this campus is based at a Ministry of Defence (MOD) establishment: your information will be
shared with the MOD for security clearance purposes and defence or other related industries or
employers that you may visit as part of your programme of study.

Support for students with disabilities or learning difficulties

22. If you think that you are likely to require any support because of a disability and/or learning difficulty
while you are on the course, you are advised to contact the University for further advice or guidance.
All requests for support will be considered in line with the criteria for ‘reasonable adjustments’ as
outlined in the Equality Act 2010. The University encourages you to contact it as soon as possible: the
sooner you do so, the more likely it will be able to have your support in place.

Proper Law and Jurisdiction

23. In accepting an offer of a place at Cranfield University, you are agreeing that the resulting contract
between us shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the law of England and you submit
to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England.

Disclaimer

24. The University undertakes to use all reasonable endeavours to provide the necessary teaching,
supervision and academic facilities. The University cannot guarantee that teaching or supervision will
be provided by any particular named individuals.

25. Our programme of courses is subject to continuing development and changed circumstances may
necessitate cancellation or alteration to the programme of courses. We reserve the right to make
variations if such action is considered necessary and in such circumstances will take all reasonable
steps to minimise any resultant disruption, but we do not accept any liability arising out of or in
connection with any such changes.
