Play + ing = Playing
Cook + ing = Cooking

WAS
Affirmative: I ​was​ work​ing​ when my husband arrived.
Negative: I ​was not ​work​ing​ when my husband arrived.
Interrogative: ​Was​ I work​ing ​when he arrived?

WERE

Affirmative: My friends ​were ​work​ing​ when my husband arrived.

Negative: My friends ​were not ​work​ing​ when my husband arrived.
Interrogative: ​Were​ my friends work​ing ​when he arrived?
