COURSE DESCRIPTION: BIOL 3405 investigates the nature of microorganisms, including essential &
current topics in microbiology. Such topics include, but are not limited to, the role of microorganisms in
disease and health, microbial growth, control, and manipulation of microorganisms, and the regulation of
our planet via environmental processes such as biogeochemical cycling. Questions and participation in
discussions are encouraged. Lecture and laboratory grades are combined for this course. Lecture and
laboratory grades are combined for this course, each worth 50% of your final grade. This class is
worth 6 units.

EXAM FORMAT
Lecture-Two multiple choice, short answer, true/false questions exams from the lecture material will be
given during the regular quarter. Each exam is worth ~100 points and will require a Scantron™ answer
sheet and #2 pencil. The final (third) exam ( ~ 100 points) will be cumulative, consisting of "big picture"
topics throughout the course. There will be two quizzes worth ~30 points. (Quizzes are worth 15% of
your grade) I hold fourty (40) additional "discretional points" and will use them as I see fit. (Pop
Quizzes, Written Assignments, Participation etc.) I will require CSU EB identification to obtain
exams on exam dates. Roster numbers will be assigned. Have a Scantron with you at all times.
(Discretionary points and exams are worth 75% of your lecture grade)

ASSIGNMENTS
Late extra credit assignments WILL NOT be accepted. Assignments must be turned via Blackboard's
Turn it in. I WILL NOT accept assignments via email unless it is prearranged with me. Mandatory
Assignments will be assigned during the course.

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is mandatory. Attendance will taken once each week randomly and will be worth 10
points, totaling 100 points. (10% of your lecture grade) It is you r responsibility to ensure that your
name is written in the attendance roster everyday. You will only get points if your name (initials) are
written on the attendance roster the day attend ance is taken . If a mistake is made, you must address
the discrepancy within 2 class periods. Attendance credit will only be given for a valid excuse (with
proper documentation) for missing class such as doctor appointment. Vacations, weddings
(bachelor's/bachelorette's parties), death anniversaries, and birthday extravaganzas ARE NOT
considered valid excuses for missing class.
1
LECTURE EXAM POLICY & LECTURE EXAM MAKE-UP POLICY:
~fake-up exams will be given only in unusual circumstances and are given at the discretion of th e
m structor. Vacations, weddings (bachelor's/bachelorette's parties), death anniversaries, and birth day
extravaganzas DO NOT count as a valid excuse for missing class. If you miss the exam I may choose to
double your score for the following exam. Everyone must take the final exam. You know the date of the
exams so please make sure you don't make travel plans on these dates. A make-up final will be provided_
for extreme circumstances. I will require CSU EB identification to obtain exams on exam dates. I will
also assign seats and all belongings (cell phones and other electronic devices) must be stored in
your backpack on exam day.

ASSIGNMENTS
I may give up to 3 extra credit assignments and NOTHING ELSE. I DO NOT round class grades so a
69.45% is a D+ and not a C-. If you are taking this class Credit/No Credit, the university policy is that
C- (70% or better) is a passing score.

Late extra credit assignments WILL NOT be accepted. Assignments must be turned via Blackboard's
Turn it in. I WILL NOT accept assignments via email unless it is prearranged with me. Mandatory
Assignments will be assigned during the course. Do not try to turn assignments in a few minutes
before the deadline; for some reason blackboard does not work.

Please keep track of your scores from BlackBoard, if you do not like your scores, please drop/withdraw
before the drop date deadline (10/6/14) and withdrawal date deadline (11/12/14).

If you have an academic issue, please make an appointment to see me in PERSON to avoid possible
misunderstanding. Corresponding with me entirely via email maybe a bit tenuous.

LAB ATTENDANCE:
Lab attendance is mandatory. More than 2 absences will result in an automatic failure of the course.
Please arrive on time and stay for the entire lab session, or until excused by the instructor. (late arrival =
absence) No make-up exams/quizzes for laboratory.

LABORTORY: Two exams will be given over the regular quarter and both are practical exams, worth
50% of your laboratory grade. Skills test will be assessed as well, worth 5% of your laboratory
grade. In addition, seven quizzes will be given and the 2 lowest scores will be dropped, worth 15% of
your laboratory grade. An "Unknown" report will be required and is worth 15% of your laboratory
grade. A lab notebook with checked at least 2 times during the quarter, worth 10% of your laboratory
grade. Attendance in laboratory is mandatory, worth 5% of your laboratory grade. You may leave the
laboratory only after your microscope has been cleaned, your biohazardous materials are disposed of
properly, gas jet turned off, and your lab area is clean. Safety/clean-up infractions will be assessed from
your total score. There are no make-up exams for laboratory.

have a pop quiz that counts towards the totality of the final grade if the offender
cannot be located. (Composed of the material of my choosing) If the offender can be
found then, s/he will have 5 points deducted from the totality of his/her grade. This
topic is non-negotiable and may result in an immediate deduction of 5
points/offense if someone asks me about it. Each offense will result in an individual
quiz and multiple offenses. No exceptions. If it is an emergency, please a leave the class
and take the call or text outside. Behavior deemed disruptive or disrespectful to me or
classmates will have an immediate deduction of 5 points/offense & may result in
being dropped from the course. Tablets and Laptop users must sit in the 1 st 3 rows
