WHO MAKES A BETTER LEADER?

SOMEONE WHO IS LOVED OR SOMEONE WHO IS FEARED?

As people of the society and at the same time a follower, we always have that one
say about what a leader should be. Maybe someone who is not corrupt, an honest
individual, who love their people and someone who will choose the peaceful way of
dealing with the problems of the country; or maybe a leader who is domineering and
possesses an intimidating aura that makes his people and follower to step back and
surrender and deals with the nation’s problem in cruel way. But if I will be asked of who
makes a better leader: someone who is loved or someone who is feared, I will stand after
the leader who is loved. This is blecause I strongly believe that a leader who is loved can
make better decisions for the nation and a leader who is loved can move the hearts of
his/her subordinates.
Leadership, as we all know, is not an easy role and needs huge responsibility that
concerns great critical thinking in making decisions. A leader must possess a quality that
will fit his position. Aside from that, a leader must be committed to what position he had
and should not be only giving commands to his people. He must act accordingly and do
things on his own, of course with a must of considering what his subordinates feel and
think about. He should know how to do things that will make his people love him. In other
words, a better leader should be someone who is loved and at the same time, respected
and admired because this will bring transparency and enables mutual relationship
between the leader and his subordinates where they can both understand the opinions of
each and make mindful decisions towards upbringing significant changes in their
environment. As what James Humes quoted, “the art of communication is the language
of leadership”, this simply implies that communication between the leader and the people
is really important in a sense that they can both have a say and opinion about a certain
circumstance. Through clear and good communication, they can build a virtuous
relationship where both are open to what they feel and think about; and fairness is applied
to all of them. And this kind of relationship is real and shouts democracy. Just take the
leadership of Julius Caesar and Ghandi in his peace movement in India as an evidence.
The two of them, as a leader, were loved by their people and have created and executed
a great plan and decisions where they have led their nation into success and prosperity.
Additionally, the people who are satisfied towards the regimen of the3ir leader can act
accordingly and create limitations to themselves where they can be productive and
optimistic on upbringing the success of their country.
On the other hand, a leader who is feared can’t make a real relationship like what
the leader who is loved with his subordinates. This kind of leader is actually the total
opposite of the leader who is loved. This is because, communication between this kind of
leader and the people is not good. A feared leader is someone who shouts intimidation
towards his people will not only gain oppositions but will gradually lose his control over
his subordinates. Like what Hitler of Nazi Germany and Ferdinand Marcos of our country
did. They are just an example of a leader who is feared. If we may take a look back or
research about Marco's regimen in our country, it actually brought horror to Filipinos. Just
the memories of the EDSA People Power we can learn about the rebellion that Filipinos
did just to dethrone Marcos. Other than that, the batas militar and the martial law are two
of the reasons why Filipinos greatly feared the administration of Marcos.
Of all the reasons and arguments, I will still stand after the idea that a better leader
is someone who is loved. Nothing is more better if a follower loves his/her leader. It just
shows that the follower seen something out of his/her leader's personality thaf makes
his/her heart move.
