THE ADVERBS

JOHANNA GONZÁLEZ
Adverbs are words that modify the meaning
of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
• A verb

I  never   eat  fruit

• An adjective / adverb

You are  so good

I spend  too much  money

Position of an adverb that modifies a verb
An adverb that modifies a verb can be placed in one of these
three positions:
• First position of the sentence (if you want to highlight)
Tomorrow  I will fly to London

• Last position of the sentence

I returned from New York  yesterday

• Central position
Central position means before the non-auxiliary verb:
I  always  work hard
Do you  always  wake up so early?

As an exception with the verb to be in the present simple

and past simple tenses the adverb goes after the verb:
I am  sometimes  lazy
Position of an adverb that modifies
an adjective / adverb
• In this case the adverb is placed before the word it modifies:

Your house is  very  nice

• This rule has only two exceptions: adverbs enought and ago:

I did well  enough  to pass my exam
