QUESTION TAGS

NOTES: Question tags are the short questions that we put it at the end of a
sentence.

If the main part of the sentence is in positive form, the question tag will be in
negative form and if the main part of the sentence is in negative form, the question
tag will be in positive form.

Example:
• You work in a school, don’t you? ( main sentence in positive and question
tag in negative) Negative question tag
• She’s a doctor, isn’t she?
• They haven’t met him, have they?
• She isn’t going, is she?

NOTES:

i) Language functions take place during communication.


ii) We use language for a variety of formal and informal purposes.
iii) There are specific grammatical structures and vocabularies are often used
with each language function.
iv) When we ask someone for something, or we ask someone to do
something, we use language functions.
v) Many ways of asking for something. We usually ask for something in a
polite and indirect way, for example, using can, could, would you mind if
and may:

Example:

A: Can I have the pencil please?


B: Of course, here you are.
A: Could I ask you the time, please?
B: No problem. It’s half past five
A: Would you mind if I borrowed your book, please?
B: Of course, here you are.
A: May I have the notebook, please? (May is more formal.)
B: Yes, you may.
