 Understanding
Immunotherapy, a New
Form of Cancer Treatment
I
mmunotherapy is a type of
biological therapy that is
very prevalent these days to
cure cancer patients. It basically
empowers one’s own immune
system to fight cancer. The immune
system, as we know can combat
certain pathogens that cause
infections and other diseases.
The therapy has become an
increasingly vital cancer treatment
option over the years. It can be
given alone or in combination with
other treatments. The potential
of the human’s immune system
is something that cannot be
underestimated. Our body already
has a strong and smart immune
system; immunotherapy enhances
it to battle with the cancerous cells.
This form of therapy sees cancer
treatment in a whole new light.
The technology received praise
from the world and it came into
the limelight when the 2018 Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine
was awarded jointly to two
researchers oceans apart, James
P. Allison, Ph.D., of The University
of Texas MD Anderson Cancer
Center, and Dr. Tasuku Honjo
of Kyoto University in Japan to
acknowledge their efforts to bring
immunotherapy: a breakthrough
treatment that turned the body’s
own immune system against
cancer. Both worked separately
during their careers to study a
protein called T cell protein
CTLA-4. When this protein
attaches to another protein found

on the surface of cancerous cells,
the immune system recognizes and
attacks cancer cells by blocking
the CTLA-4 protein. Their research
eventually led to the drug Yervoy
(ipilimumab) which was found
helpful in treating certain types of
cancer. Their years of hardwork
have finally begun to pay off; it has
ushered a new hope for cancer
patients.
So, how is this new form of
cancer treatment different
from the traditional forms of
cancer treatment, particularly,
chemotherapy? Unlike
chemotherapy that attacks
the carcinoid tumors directly,
immunotherapy treats the immune
system. Immunotherapy makes the
immune system more robust to
improve immune response. They
also teach the immune system to
spot cancerous cells and destroy
them. While chemo works as long
as the effect of the drug is there
in the body, immunotherapy
has a long-lasting effect on the
patients. Other differences are
how both the form of treatments
affects the patients’ overall health.
Chemotherapy attacks all kinds
of rapidly dividing cells, whether
healthy or cancerous, which causes
side effects like hair loss and
nausea. However, immunotherapy
isn’t completely free of side effects;
it can probably cause skin rashes,
diarrhea, or other health issues
depending on how the immune
system responds. On one hand,
where chemo has a faster result,
immunotherapy takes a longer
time to shrink tumors.
There are, however, several hurdles
that are pushing back this next-
gen technology to be the forefront
of cancer treatment. There are
various challenges that doctors are
dealing with. Firstly, the treatment
is very costly, and secondly, it is
very slow. After investing so much
time and money, if the patients
realize that the treatment is not
working, it would be extremely
heartbreaking considering the
unnecessary expenses, severe side
effects like infections, hormone

hy sleep
is such an
important
part of our daily
activities? Why
humans spend a
major portion (about
one-third) of their lives
just sleeping? Sleep is
as important for the body
as food or exercise. Sleep has
been crucial to living beings with
a nervous system. Even files,
worms, and fishes sleep. But
it has always been a curiosity
about why do organisms have
a wake-sleep cycle. Sleeping
reduces stress, repairs wear and
tear of cells during the daytime,
reduces inflammation, improves
memory etc.
Well, researchers have found
yet another reason to take a good
night sleep. The research could
explain how important sleep is
and how sleep disturbance can
actually hamper brain performance,
affect aging, and lead to various
brain disorders. As per the study
published in the journal Nature
Communications, scientists at
Bar-Ilan University in Israel
revealed how sleep is related to
chromosomes. They experimented
on live zebrafish using 3D time-lapse
imaging tech and demonstrated that
how sleep is required on neuron
level.
It was the first time in the history
of scientific explorations that
researchers were able to define

resolution, an experiment that put
the importance of sleep again on the
map. Each neuron needs sleep to
boost nuclear performance. During
the hours of living beings being
awake, their chromosome dynamics
are low. DNA damage is caused by
many day-to-day processes such
as oxidative stress, radiation, and
neuronal activity. The damage is
a natural process; however, DNA
damage is consistently accumulated
in the case of lack of sleep and can
reach an unsafe level which can lead
to serious health hazards.
As per the research, sleep increases
chromosome dynamics and also
fixes the DNA damage caused in each
neuronduring the hourswe spend
being awake. The balance between
sleeping and being awake must
be maintained for nervous system
health as the DNA maintenance
process is not efficient enough
during the hours of being awake.
Hence the body requires a sleep
period with least body activities

right, but a large portion of

have access to basic medical
facilities. One of the major
reasons for this is the dearth of
qualified doctors. The ratio of
doctors to people is a shocking
1 per 1000. What it means

 A Highly Innovative Approach to Treating and
Supporting Individuals with Developmental
Disabilities: Rethink Autism

T Rethink Autism
he first several years in
the life of a child are the
most important. It is when
children learn how to talk, read,
write, form friendships, develop
bonds with their or family and
begin to form a perception of the
world around them. This is a
period in their lives when they
are most impressionable.
However, certain children are
unfortunate enough to be born
with developmental disabilities
that hamper their overall
development. One of them is
autism. It is mainly characterized
by difficulties in socializing,
communication, learning, and
certain repetitive behaviors. Signs
of autism usually surface in the
first three years of a child’s life,
with some cases being diagnosed
in later years. Developmental
disabilities such as autism affect
hundreds of millions of children all
across the globe each year.
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
is one of the only treatments for
this population recommended by
the medical community. However,
there are too few caregivers trained
in ABA, which leaves a massive
burden on the families of children
suffering from developmental
disabilities, given the severe
shortage of experts to treat it.
A company named Rethink Autism
Inc. has come up with an ingenious
way to extend help to the millions
suffering from a developmental
disability by providing a simple way
to train their family caregivers as
well as teachers and others in ways

children with developmental
disabilities posing a significant
challenge for the economy as a whole.

The University of Gothenburg
has been doing its research on
uterine transplantation for more
than 15 years now, and under the
research, the world got its first baby
born with robot-assisted uterus
transplantation on April 8th, 2019;
a major technological breakthrough.
The baby boy was born completely

says Pernilla Dahm-Kähler, a
leading robot-assisted surgeon,
gynaecologist, and one of the
research scientist at Sahlgrenska
Academy, University of Gothenburg.
Under the research headed by Mats
Brännström, Professor of Obstetrics
and Gynecology at Sahlgrenska
Academy, the donor was operated
with robot-assisted keyhole surgery,
which was much less invasive for
the donor compared to traditional
open surgery. Considering the
complications and safety issues
involved in uterus transplant, this
research was extremely important
as it was the first time that the less
invasive robot-assisted surgery was
made possible.
The donor was operated with
robotic arms that performed the
surgery. The robots were guided by
two surgeons, sitting at a personal
workstation a few meters away with
a joystick-like tool and magnified
3D screen image. The operation
was performed with immense
precision. The donor was operated
through one-centimeter incisions
in the abdomen. Another incision
was made to remove the uterus and
then it was immediately inserted in
the recipient’s body through open
surgery.
This new technique is extremely
beneficial to the donors as the
process is less painful and helps
them to get back on their feet
faster. Presently, the uterus was
transplanted in the recipient using
the traditional method i.e. open

going to be able to transplant the
uterus in the recipient using robot-
assisted keyhole technique,” said
Niclas Kvarnström, the in charge of
transplant surgery, who performed
the difficult task of connecting
vessels in the uterus recipient.

at Sahlgrenska University Hospital
in October 2017. 10 months after
the transplant, an embryo formed
with the help of IVF (in vitro
fertilization) was inserted in the
transplanted uterus. Nine months
later, a healthy baby was born and
also the pregnancy was free from
any complications. It was also
recorded that the mother was in
good health throughout. The team
of surgeons believes that the project
was a great success and one of the
biggest milestones achieved in
medical history. It was one of the
most challenging cases performed
by them in 2017-18. However,
the team was also successful in
performing the first
uterine transplant
using an
organ from
a deceased
donor.

was the first
baby of its
kind, and they
call it “the Robot

is the ninth baby born
with a uterus transplant

I
t is often said that as a person
grows old, it is vital that he or
she keep themselves occupied
either through hobbies, social
interaction or volunteering for
various activities. Old age often
brings about forgetfulness and
most people just brush it off
as something that is just an
inescapable part of life. However,
what most people are unaware of
is the hidden dangers of growing
memory loss associated with
growing older. Mild Cognitive
Impairment (MCI) has only
recently been clinically accepted as
a sign of decline in brain functions.
What’s worse is that has now
been officially been identified as
a sign of the early onset of severe
neurodegenerative disorders like
Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
In most of the cases, such
disorders are only detected when
they reach advanced stages, a
period which makes treatment
all the more difficult and renders
the patient dependent. The most
recent research even suggested
that about 50% of the cases of MCI
end up resulting in one form of
neurodegenerative disease or the
other. But an international team
of researchers has stumbled onto
a technique that could pave the
way for easy testing for MCI and
subsequently, early diagnosis of
neurological problems. The best
part of the new technique for
testing is that it could be done at
home with nothing more than
a smartphone application.

Results of the recent
study have led to another
team even developing the
application. Tests carried
out on the app have yielded
positive results. It features
a fairly simple multi-
sensory test to determine
if a candidate suffers from
MCI. The candidates are
told to press a button if
they see a light or hear a
sound. The point of this test
is to analyze the speed at
which a person can detect
a sound or flash of light.
The sensory stimuli and the
resulting response to it are
indicators of early stages of
MCI. So the early diagnosis
of MCI can enable doctors
to implement effective
treatments to contain the
worsening of the situation.
It is based on the theory
that people suffering from
MCI respond to stimuli in
different ways than how
healthy people respond to
the same.
This is a major improvement
from the conventional ways
to detect MCI. Some of the
current diagnostic methods
include careful observation
over a period of
time and a
few
blood tests coupled with some
smell tests. The responses to
sensory stimuli uncovered
by the new form of testing
correlate with what has been
observed among patients
that are known to suffer
from MCI. The application,
when released, would help
with better outreach to
people who suffer the risk of
neurodegenerative disorders.
Most patients do not have
access to medical professionals
due to either location
constraints or due to a lack
of awareness. These reasons,
coupled with a general
tendency to procrastinate, led
to precursors being diagnosed
very late, thereby limiting the
chances of effective treatment.
In spite of the current
levels of advancements in
medical technologies, we
know precious little about
neurodegenerative disorders.
It is still largely unclear as to
why certain people tend to
fall victim to such debilitating
diseases, while others seem
to remain healthy well into
their nineties. Moreover, there
is no definitive cure or mode
of treatment that is known
to effectively reverse or even
limit the rate of degeneration.
Stem cell therapy, for all
its observed benefits and
regenerative capabilities, has
shown little or no success
in countering the ill effects
of diseases like Alzheimer’s
disease, Parkinson’s disease,
Dementia, and so on.
However, certain alternative
forms of medicine have shown
to bring about some levels
of improvement in patients
suffering from disabling
neurological diseases. Yoga
and meditation have been
known to contain further
deterioration and even
bring about improvement.
Various studies and research
conducted by numerous
subject matter experts have
consistently shown that
practitioners of advanced
forms of yoga and meditative
techniques have revealed
astonishing results. MRI
results have revealed increased
brain activities and even
improved levels of cognitive
