READING AND WRITING

PROCESSING READING

I. Instructions: Look for a website where you’ll find articles on reading preferences of adolescents in the Philippines. Fill in the following grid
based on your search. Then ask your classmate to verify the information that you have provided by going to the same site and investigating
the information you have gathered. He/she must write his/her comment at the back of your paper, it will be considered as the second part of
this activity.

Locate information: Where did you find the article? Write the website.

http://ejes.eu/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/3.pdf

Evaluate information: Was the information useful? Why or why not?

Yes. Because before, we always thought that the reading preferences are much important if you want to be a good reader.

Evaluate information: Were you able to use the hyperlinks found in this site? Were they helpful? Why or why not?

Yes, because they were able to prove that the information on the article are true.

Synthesize Information: If you have gone to several websites before choosing this site, what made you decide to choose this site?

Other sites were not located at the Philippines and also they were not able to prove their statements. (hyperlinks in the references does not
work.)

Synthesize Information: Based on your reading of this site, summarize the information you have gathered. (100-150 word paragraph)

The article mentioned that “reading is life.” Some students will agree but not everyone. It also mentioned there that if a man’s prior activity is
reading then there will be a big chances that he will be concious on what he will be reading it may be for academics purposes or personal
purposes. This study aims to find the student’s reading preference and the students reading performance, does the reading preference affect
the performance of the students? With the results they were able to conclude that the Elementary Education prerferred dictionary followed by
newspapers, magazines, short-stories, and etc, whileSecondary Education preferred encyclopedia followed by magazines, short stories,
textbook, etc. they were also able to conclude that reading preferences and reading performance does not relate with each other, meaning,
reading preferences does not affecct the reading performane of a student, it is a personal responsibility to be good at reading.

Communicate information: If you were to react to this article, what would you place on the comment you will post?

It doesn’t matter what reading preferences you like as long as you make it a hobby you will be able to be a good reader.

II. Answer each question with a paragraph of at least 150 words.

1. Were you able to read the text without any difficulty? Why?
For me, I believe that I was able to read my chosen text effectively and I was able to understand what I read. The main
problem that I have faced with this specific text is its length; Because it is a full research paper about the reading preferences of
Filipino teens, it took me longer to finish reading the whole text. Also, I had somewhat of a difficult time trying to figure out what
pieces of information from the text I will use as part of the summary I have put above. This meant that I would constantly have to
go back and re-read certain parts to see whether it was important enough to include in the summary. In conclusion, the text was
easy for me to understand when I was done reading it, but the only problem I faced was choosing what information will I choose
for certain answers.
2. Are there differences in the way you read printed texts from the way you read texts from the screen of your computer,
cell phone or tablet?

Like most of my classmates, I wear glasses and sometimes contact lenses, I find that reading from a computer, phone,
or Ipad screen, can really hurt my eyes; So, I find it hard to disagree that there are differences between the way I read on a
computer, phone, or Ipad virsus the way I read a physical book. An example of this would be breaks, when I read on my
gadgets I usually stop to re adjust my eyes more often than I do when I read an actual book. I think it is like this because of
the harmful rays of my devices. I also prefer reading from a physical copy because I am interested in the idea of being able
to highlight the text so that when it comes back to finding the information that I think is important, I can just look at the
highlighted text. In conclusion, I like physically reading more because I find it more helpful and maybe calming.

III. Peer Comment.

My thoughts on the article that DL Natanawan chose is, what I initially believed is that, if the person prefers the genre or type of reading, then
their reading skills will improve because their brain is enjoying the reading. However, after reading the article and DL’s summarization, I have realized
it is all in how the reader reads and their overall ability that affects their reading performance/ how well they read and NOT about what they are reading.
