A Note From The Director

The tale of Carmen and Spanish cavalry soldier Don Jose

is translated into a modern-day story of a parachute
factory worker Carmen Jones and a loyal Corporal named
Joe. Carmen is smitten with Joe and determined to win his
affection. It's wartime and Carmen always appears to be
at the heart of any fight that's going on. When Joe is
detailed to go and arrest her, he falls in love with Carmen
and allows her to escape while he deserts the army. While
waiting for Joe, she attracts the attention of prize-fighter
Husky Miller and follows him to Chicago for his im-
portant boxing match. Carmen ditches Joe without hesita-
tion but Joe is not to be put off that easily and he follows
Carmen to Chicago. Joe, desperate and maddened with
jealously, confronts Carmen at the stadium in an ending
that will have you at the edge of your seat. Carmen Jones
Roshunda Jones
by Oscar Hammerstein II is based on Prosper Merimee's
Director of Theatre Opera "Carmen." Dorothy Dandridge and Harry
Belafonte starred in the movie adaptation of this classic
Broadway musical.

CARMEN JONES by far is one of the most complicated musicals I’ve ever directed. The
show is based on an opera so the students had to embrace a whole new style of singing. I
think we have some future Leontyne Price and Marian Anderson’s among us. I have abso-
lutely loved how the company has embraced this modern day opera. They have worked dil-
igently to create the world of this musical and we are thrilled to share the story with our
audience. My extended thanks go to Mr. Collins, Mrs. Dickson, Ms. Stone, Ms. Fleming,
Mr. McCullough, Ms. Salinas, Ms. Estes, Mr. Jordan and Mr. Taylor for collaborating with
me on this project. I couldn’t have done it without you. I also would like to thank the dedi-
cated Carver Alumni who come back every year to lend a helping hand! You rock! Special
thanks go to our wonderful principal Ms. Ross and our administrative team for their sup-
port. Appreciation is also given to our extremely supportive Performing Arts Counselor,
Ms. Brown. Thanks for always supporting the Arts! Thanks is also given to our diligent
custodians under the leadership of Ms. Audrey for being accommodating to us during the
rehearsals. Another extended thanks goes to the front office staff for always lending an
extra hand. Thanks to our parent support group who always take care of us. Last but cer-
tainly not least, a huge thanks is given to all the Carver students who have dedicated so
much time and energy to produce a memorable show. I wish I could name you all individu-
ally. Without further adieu, we are proud to present Carmen Jones! Enjoy the show and
