CIRCULAR MOTION, WORK, ENERGY AND POWER
FINAL QUIZ No. 2

I. Solve the following problems.

A. CIRCULAR MOTION
1. A Japanese astronaut working in the International Space Station is in a circular
orbit around the Earth with a maintained altitude of 500 km from the surface of
the Earth. The space vessel is moving with a constant speed of 8 kilometers per
second. What is the acceleration (in m/𝑠 2 ) of the astronaut? Consider the radius
of the Earth. (10 pts.)
2. A tiny vehicle having a mass of 0.8 kg travels
with uniform speed inside the vertical circular
track with radius of 5.00 m as shown in the
figure. When the vehicle is at the top of the track
it has a normal force equal to 6.00 N, determine
the normal force on the vehicle when it is at the
bottom of the track. (10 pts.)

B. WORK, ENERGY, AND POWER

1. During a 10-minute period, a weightlifter lifts a 30-kg dumbbell 50 times, from
the floor level to a height of 1.75 meters. What is the average power (in
horsepower) done by the weightlifter? (15 pts.)
2. One roller-coaster car in a famous Taiwanese theme park has a mass of 250 kg.
When it is on top of a 40-meter hill, its speed is 5 m/s. It dives down to the
lowest point of the track and then climbs up again to a height of 25 meters. What
is the speed of the roller-coaster car at this height assuming the friction between
the wheels of the coaster and the track is negligible? (15 pts.)
3. A train weighing 1000 kN is being pulled up to a grade of 2% grade. The train
resistant is 5000 N. The speed of the train is increased from 6 m/sec to 12 m/sec
in a distance of 300 m. Find the maximum horsepower developed by the
locomotive. (15 pts.)
4. A horizontal force of 1500 N pushes 1000 N block up an incline whose slope is
3 vertical to 4 horizontal. If 𝜇𝑘 = 0.20, determine the time required to increase
the velocity of the block from 3 to 15 m/s. (15 pts.)
