eader of Opposition Simon Bridges is
batting, almost single-handedly, to take
bilateral relationship with India to the
next level on his first official visit to the country. 
It seems that the National Party Leader has
understood the nuances of doing business with
India by being a friend first before talking about
anything about business. At least this is what
is coming out from Mr Bridges’ numerous
public utterances and speeches in his ongoing
India visit. 
Earlier on Tuesday, September 3, speaking
with The Indian Weekender from New Delhi
over the phone, Mr Bridges acknowledged that

Usha Kallianpurkar sang last
week in Auckland under the aegis of
the Mohan Nadkarni Foundation’s
fifth Mohan Nadkarni memorial
concert. It was her first performance
in New Zealand.
Usha presented two bada khayals
(full-length renditions) in raags
Puriya and Bhupeshwari in that order
before and after the interval.
Steeped in classicism of the
traditional Kirana gharana (a
school of singing in India’s Uttar
Pradesh state), her presentation was
reminiscent of renditions of the great
old masters of the gharana. (One of
the biggest names of this gharana is
the late Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen
Joshi.)
At the conclusion of her Puriya,
the auditorium resounded with peals
of applause from the knowledgeable
audience at the Grey Lynn Library
Auditorium.
The concert, which was broadcast
live on social media platforms, also
drew fulsome praise from watchers
far and near.
Her post interval Bhupeshwari,
which also goes by the name
Pratiksha, is a raag that is rarely
performed these days.

Indian man killed in
Waikato road accident was
married just seven months ago

A
n Indian man travelling with his friend
in Waikato died in a car accident on
Thursday, August 29, the circumstances
of which are being investigated by the Serious
Crash Unit.
The deceased was identified as Kieran
Goerge Jose, a resident of Waikato working as
a nurse with Waikato District Health Board.
Friends of the deceased told The Indian
Weekender that Kieran was married seven
months ago and had applied for his wife’s
visitor visa with Immigration New Zealand.
Mr Jose came to New Zealand three and a half
years ago and was on a resident visa here.
Police media last Thursday reported that
one man was killed and three injured in a two-
car collision in Paeroa-Tahuna Road, Otway,
Waikato.
The three other injured in the accident were
taken to the hospital with moderate injuries to
Waikato and Thames Hospital.
Auckland Malayali Samajam, a community
organisation based in Auckland, came forward
to complete the official procedure with the
Indian High Commission to repatriate his body
to his hometown in Kerala, India.
A community viewing was held for the
deceased on Saturday, August 31 at Parish of
the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church,
in Auckland which was attended by over one
hundred community members.
Mr Jose’s body was repatriated on Wednesday,
September 4, via Singapore Airlines to Kerala,
India where his last rites will be performed.

Deceased Mr Jose was travelling with his
friend Nithin from Waihi when this accident
occurred.
Mr Nithin told The Indian Weekender that he
fell asleep on the front passenger’s seat when
he felt the vehicle skidding, and the accident
occurred.
Mr Nithin added that he has no memory of
what happened next as he went unconscious;
the next thing he remembers was being taken
to the hospital.
Mr Nithin came to New Zealand as a nursing
student in February 2018 and was friends with
Mr Jose for some time.

New school donations scheme
announced: What families need to know
E
ducation Minister Chris Hipkins on
Wednesday, September 4 announced
the release of school donations
scheme whereby Decile 1-7 schools will be
given an option to opt in to receive funding
from the government $150 per student every
school year. This will result in opt-in schools
from not asking for voluntary donations from
the parents of the students.
“We’re taking significant financial pressure
off many Kiwi families by taking care of school
donations, with Decile 1-7 schools able to opt
in to receive $150 per student every school
year,” Chris Hipkins said. Around 1700 schools
will soon be able to opt in to receive additional
funding from the government.
Currently, education in any New Zealand
state school is completely free, although many
schools request parents to contribute through a
once a year voluntary donations.
The announcement will potentially take away
that burden from parents of many schools, as
long as schools opt-in to the government’s
donation scheme.
“We know how difficult it is for parents to
afford the donations that schools request, and
the pressure it places on parents who aren’t
able to afford them. Many students will now
be able to get the education they need with less
financial pressure on their parents.
“The release of requirements for
schools  today clarifies for Decile 1-7 school
boards what they need to consider before
deciding whether or not to opt in to the scheme.
Guidance for Parents has also been released
by the Ministry of Education to educate parents
what they can be asked to pay for, and what
is simply voluntary. The guidance for parents
document also says that parents can attend the
school board meeting where they will be
discussing whether to opt-in or not if they wish
to attend. The opt-in schools can still ask for

a voluntary donation for an overnight school
camp, although it is for parents to decide to
contribute or not.
Meanwhile, the schools not opting-in the
government scheme for additional funding
will continue to ask for voluntary donation of
$150 per school year. Although, regardless
of schools are opting-in or not from the
government scheme, donations are voluntary,
and so one can choose if they want to pay none,
some or the entire donation.
If parents choose not to make a donation,
their child cannot be stopped from attending a
camp or field trip if it is part of the core learning
programme (curriculum).
Labour Party has campaigned last elections
on scrapping of school donations and had
earmarked $265.6 million in budget 2019 for
next four years to put an end on voluntary
school donations.
However, this offer was not made available
to Decile 8-10 schools. Earlier in July
2019 the New Zealand Principals’ Federation
has criticised the government decision to leave
out Decile 8-10 schools. Schools have until
November 14 to decide whether or not to opt
in to the scheme and those who sign up will
receive their funding in early 2020.
The Ministry of Education will monitor
schools that opt in to ensure they do not
continue to seek donations from parents.

‘Government on track with its promises in the year
of delivery,’ says Transport Minister Phil Twyford

negligence and underinvestment.

The Minister refused to be bogged
down by the criticism among some
quarters, particularly in big-ticket
policies like KiwiBuild, where the

“We have acknowledged that
there was a housing crisis. We have
acknowledged that the KiwiBuild
policy was not delivering at the
early stage and we have made some
changes,” Mr Twyford said.
“We built some 2100 houses in
public housing just last year.
“The previous government has
reduced the number of houses in
public housing by 1500 over the nine
years,” Mr Twyford said.

his year a record number of five Kiwi-
Indian women are standing in local
elections in Auckland.
Local elections decide who is on your local
council, regional council, district health board,
and other important organisations such as
licensing trust in your area.
Among the five Kiwi-Indian women standing
this year for local elections two are standing
for community boards, two for District Health
Boards and one for licensing trust.
Indeed, the numbers are still less than the
national average of women candidates in local
elections.
In 2016, there were 35 per cent women in
community boards, and 35 per cent in trusts and
44 per cent in District Health Boards, where as
opposed to this, this year of all the Kiwi-Indians
in the fray for local elections, only 20 per cent
are women.
However, this is still a greater number of
women candidates throwing their hats in the
ring than in any previous occasion.
Clearly, Kiwi-Indian women are coming of
age politically.
They already dominate and enjoy major share
of representation in the national parliament
where a whopping 66 per cent Kiwi-Indian
MPs are women and are now gearing up to
stand in local elections.
It is noteworthy that two MPs are women
out of a total three Kiwi-Indian MPs in current
parliament.
The Indian Weekender spoke with them
about their aspirations and vision in local
politics along with their thoughts about their
Kiwi-Indian heritage.

he Bihar Jharkhand Samaj of Australia
and New Zealand on Monday,
September 2 celebrated the Teej festival
with the community members in a private
residence in Papatoetoe.
Given a small presence of the Bihar and
Jharkhand community in Auckland, the
community members arranged a small function
in South Auckland where members
gathered to conduct special puja and
celebrations. to participate in

on the following morning with puja and
prayers. Sweets offered to the deities on
this occasion are gujia (pedakia) and thekua
along with offerings of seasonal fruit,” Mr
Prakash added.

he Fijian Immigration Department is
expected to rollout the first 5000 epassports
as early as next week.
The department and a group of technical officials
from the Muhlbauer ID Services in Germany are
presently working to put in the final touches to the
epassport system.
Permanent Secretary for the Office of the
Prime Minister, Sugar Industry and Immigration
Yogesh Karan says they are pleased to have the
Vice President of Muhlbauer ID Services Ludwig
Huber and his team of engineers and technicians
in the country this week for the final round of
epassport tests and verification.
He says that they had a factory acceptance
test in Germany and this was done to help staff
familiarize themselves with the new system which
was successful.
Karan also says that they are continuing with
integration and testing and this virtually means
that the system must be compatible with the
international border management system.
He adds that the department along with the
assistance of the group from Germany, would also

No visa required for 109 countries to enter Fiji

his has been revealed by Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in a
written submission tabled in Parliament
yesterday. However , another 86 countries need
visas to enter our country.
The Department of Immigration, Mr
Bainimarama said was the entity responsible
for the administration of Fiji’s immigration
services.
He said they work under the Immigration
Act 2013 and Passport and Citizenship Acts to
protect Fiji’s borders.
“Within the department is a section called
compliance and investigation. The core
responsibility of the section is to manage visa
holders compliance with their visa conditions,”
Mr Bainimarama said.
“The section is also tasked with carrying
out investigations into persons of interest, visa
holders become persons of interest when they
overstay their permitted stay period in Fiji.”
Mr Bainimarama said with the visa scams and
immigration malpractice happening globally,
the department was now working with Office
of the Solicitor General to update the current
immigration laws.

response offered so far by the government, to a problem that has existed for quite some
time and is rapidly aggravating, causing much economic loss and human-pain, is lacklustre This week in New Zealand’s history

Ties in oil, gas sector to be focus of PM Modi’s Russia trip

ndia and Russia are set to roll
out a five-year roadmap for
stronger cooperation in the oil
and gas sector, apart from pacts
on skills development, mining,
medicine, education and agriculture
as Prime Minister Narendra Modi
visits Russia’s far-eastern city of
Vladivostok where he will meet
Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Briefing the media on the Prime
Minister’s visit, Foreign Secretary
Vijay Gokhale said the possibility of
opening a maritime route connecting
Chennai with Vladivostok will be
explored as it could link Europe
as well through the Arctic route.
Gokhale said India is also looking at
cooperation in the farming sector and
exploring the possibility of sending
skilled manpower to Russia.
In Vladivostok, Modi and Putin
will hold the 20th India-Russia
annual summit on September 4.
During his stay, Modi and the
Russian President will visit one of
Russia’s major shipbuilding yards.
On September 5, Modi will attend
the Eastern Economic Forum as
chief guest and hold bilateral talks
with several leaders on the sidelines.
He and Putin will also visit an
international judo championship in
Vladivostok in which a six-member
Indian team is participating, Gokhale
said. He said a number of agreements,
including in the coal mining and
power sectors, are expected to be
firmed up during Modi’s visit.
Replying to a question, the foreign
secretary said Russia fully supports
India on the Kashmir issue and on its
concerns on cross-border terrorism.
He said both sides are expected to
firm up a five-year roadmap laying
out possibilities of cooperation in
oil and gas sector. At present, India

the Global Fund for AIDS, TB
and Malaria (GFTAM) for the 6th
replenishment cycle (2020-22). This
is an increase of 10 per cent over the
amount contributed by the US in the
5th cycle.
The Global Fund is a partnership
designed to accelerate the end of
AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. As
an international organization, the
Global Fund mobilizes and invests
more than $4 billion a year to support
programs run by local experts in
more than 100 countries.
India has had a sustained
partnership with the Global Fund
since 2002 both as a recipient and
as a donor. So far, India has received
$2.0 billion from the Global Fund
for attaining targets related to HIV/
AIDS, TB and Malaria reduction. In
the current funding cycle (2018-21),
the Global Fund has allocated $500
million to India.
As a donor, India has contributed
$46.5 million so far till 2019
including $20 million for the 5th
Replenishment.
Announcing the decision, Union
Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said,
“India’s pledge for the Global Fund
strongly demonstrates its strong
political leadership to achieve the
universal health for all and its equally
strong commitment to work across
borders to join hands in fighting the
epidemics of these three diseases”.
He said that India was the first
implementing country to host a
replenishment milestone of the
Global Fund and now has become
first among G20, BRICS and
implementer countries to announce

Federation (ISSF) Munich World
Cup in May, participants and coaches
from around the globe were talking about an
“Indian tsunami” sweeping through the ranges
in major events this year. The Indian coaches
had a smart retort, “It is just a small wave; the
tsunami is yet to come.”
Late on Monday, at the end of four ISSF
Rifle/Pistol World Cup stages (New Delhi,
Beijing, Munich and Rio de Janeiro), Indian
shooters have collected a staggering 22 medals,
including 16 golds, finishing the cycle of World
Cups as the world’s leading shooting nation
for the very first time. Powerhouse China,
with 31 medals in total but only six golds,
finished second. To put the unprecedented haul
in perspective, Indian pistol and rifle shooters
had won only 11 gold medals in the history of
ISSF World Cups till 2018. The performance
puts India in strong reckoning for a rich medal
haul in the Tokyo Olympics considering the
World Cups this year featured the strongest
competition — with Olympic quota places
up for grabs, the field was packed with world
champions and Olympic medallists.
India’s show in Rio was capped by two
teenage sensations — Saurabh Chaudhary
and Manu Bhaker, both 17, who defeated the
second Indian team of Yashaswini Deswal
and Abhishek Verma in a close final for a this season; the pair won gold medals in mixed

SPROUT
INGREDIENTS:
SALAD
• 2tbsp - sprouted black chickpeas
(Kala chana)
• 2tbsp - sprouted lintels (Whole
moong dal)
• 150gm - cottage cheese (Paneer)
• 1 - red onion, small
• 4 - cherry tomatoes
• 2tbsp - peanuts
• 1tbsp - cumin seeds
• 1 - green chilli
• 11/2tsp - black salt (kala namak)
• 1tsp - chaat masala
• 2tbsp - fresh coriander, chopped
• 1 - lemon
• Pumpkin seeds, flax seeds and
sesame seeds
METHOD
• In a bowl add sprouted black
chickpeas, sprouted lintels and mix
well with the spoon.
• Crumble tofu with your fingers and
add it to the chickpeas.
• Peel, wash and cut onion, cut cherry
VEGETABLE SALAD
INGREDIENTS:

• In a pan, dry roast the peanuts over
medium flame, remove them onto a
plate to cool.
• In the same pan dry roast cumin
seeds until fragrant, crush them FOR DRESSING

• Cut green chilli and mix it to the
above ingredients, along with salt,
chaat masala, coriander and a juice METHOD
of lemon.
• Sprinkle seeds and give a good mix.

HOW TO MAKE SPROUTS: take
black chickpeas in a bowl then add
enough water to cover them and leave
them overnight or for at least 6 -7
hours. Drain the chickpeas and then
take a wet muslin cloth, spread it into
a bowl, add drained chickpeas in it;
cover the chickpeas with the muslin
cloth and leave it for 4 -5 hours till you
see that the chickpeas are sprouted.

• 1 - capsicum
• 2 - zucchini’s
• 1 - eggplant
• 1 - red onion, large
• 1 - broccoli
• 1 - garlic clove
• 1tsp - sesame seeds
• 1tsp - flax seeds
• 1 - lemon
• 1tbsp - olive oil
• 1tsp salt
• 1/2tsp black pepper, crushed
• Pre heat oven to 180 degreesC.
• Line up baking tray with sliver foil.
• Wash and cut carrots, capsicum, zucchini’s, eggplant and onion
into pieces about the same size.
• Wash and cut broccoli into bite size florets.
• Peel and crush the garlic, in a bowl add everything and give a good mix.
Keep aside.
• In a small jar, squeeze lemon and add all the ingredients for the dressing, close the
jar with the lid and give a good shake to mix it properly.
• Add dressing to the vegetables and give a good mix.
• Spread the vegetables evenly on a lined baking tray and roast them for 15 to 20 minutes till you see the edges are
brown in colour and the vegetables are tender ( Stir around the vegetables after 10 minutes ).
• Transfer the vegetables into a bowl and then add sesame seeds, flax seeds; mix well.
• Serve

of our country is Ganesh Chaturthi
which is celebrated in honour of Lord
Ganesha’s birth.
There are many different versions when it comes
to Ganesha's birth.
While some believe that he was brought into the
world by Goddess Parvati, others believe that he was
a creation of his parents Lord Shiva and Goddess
Parvati. Every year, the 10 day long festival begins
by bringing a clay idol of Ganesha home.
For the entire occasion, at least one member of
the family stays with the idol to give him company
and special treats such as modaks and laddus are
prepared.
On the last day, devotees carry the idol to a nearby
water body to immerse it. It is believed that the idol
dissolves in water and Lord Ganesha returns home
to his parents Shiva and Parvati at Mount Kailash.
Among others, Bollywood celebrities also
celebrate the festival by bringing idols of Ganesha
home.
Bollywood personalities such as Kangana Ranaut,
Arjun Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Kartik Aaryan, Anil

This year 2019, for NZ fashion week was by
far special. They included a model that was on
wheel chair at the Sustainability show, which
was so heart-warming to see.
The barrier of what you expect a model to be
like was broken. It was like the doors opened
for everyone.

market for us.
We got to see emerging designers like
Adhala Lenzo- such a colourful show, the
use of colours in designs were amazing, and
such flare. African culture in these outfit really
wowed the audience.
The designer kept the upbeat culture and
brought these outfits to life.
The mood setter definitely Not For You
showcased their new collection street wear, by
far my fave look for this season.
A lot of amazing styles for menswear were
seen in this show.
The styles we got to see was graffiti covered
jackets, the use of red and whites in men’s
clothing the bomber jackets, and what totally
amazed me was the recent introduction of the
women’s wear.
For street clothing that was plenty sexy,
body play suits, turtle neck back in fashion, it
looked effortless and mesmerising at the same
time.

he Manawatu Muslim
Association on Monday,
September 2 presented a
plaque in appreciation of the love
and support received from the
community after the Christchurch
mosque attacks this year.
Speaking to member of the
executive committee of MMA,
Dr Zulfiqar Butt said the Muslim
community living in Manawatu
was overwhelmed with the love and
support received after the dreadful
mosque attacks.
“We received loads of flower
bouquets, hundreds of cards,
messages, pieces of art after the
attack and the entire community
stood by us during one of the darkest
times of New Zealand,” Dr Butt said.

& tertiary institutes, community
groups & organisations, trusts and

New Islamic centre in Papatoetoe

A
new Islamic centre has opened in the
Papatoetoe, South Auckland that will
serve as a learning space for the youth,
women and children of the area.
A three-bedroom house has been rented on
167 Tui Road in Papatoetoe where five times
prayers will be held, and weekly Islamic
programmes that were earlier held at a garage
of a Muslim community member.
“We used to have a weekly programme
hosted by one our brothers from other Masjids
at our garage, and this has been happening for
over a few years now – so we thought getting
one established place dedicated to only prayers
and Islamic events and programme will be ideal
for the community in Papatoetoe,” Mohammed
Jamseer, trustee of Papatoetoe Muslim Youth
Trust told The Indian Weekender.
“A place where Muslims can congregate
to offer their five times daily salah and where
our kids can learn the Quran and Sunnah,” Mr
Jamseer said.
The trust formed a formal committee in
2018 registered as a charitable organisation as
Papatoetoe Muslim Youth Trust.
The trust is currently paying $550 per week
as rent for the property excluding power and
other utility bills, and it will be rented to single
male boarders to cover the expenses for some
time and fundraising activities held.
The living and dining rooms will be utilised
for five times congregational prayer, Quran
classes for the kids and youth programmes.
“We envision to make this a fully-fledged
recreational centre for our youths someday,”
Mr Jamseer said.
The location of the new Islamic centre is ideal
for the community and travellers in the South
Auckland region as it is in close proximity
to Manukau city, Hunters Plaza, MIT, AUT
Manukau Campus, Motorway 1 and other busy
routes such as East Tamaki Road, Huia Road
and Great South Road.
Currently, the trust is working closely
with Aotearoa Muslim Youth (Mangere),
Musalla Fatima (Manurewa) and various
other organisations with the aim to expand its
affiliations to other youth groups both locally
and nationally.
“One of our many goals will be to make sure
that how every Muslim men, women, youth
and child in our locality gets connected to our
Islamic centre.
“We envision a future in which thriving and
integrated Muslim youths serve both our local
community and NZ as a whole in which they
are considered as an indispensable component
of the country’s political, economic, religious
and social fabrics,” Mr Jamseer added.
