like to steer boats by the compass. That is to say, I read the course off the GPS and
then swing the wheel until the compass card and lubber line match what the screen
says. (I’ve worked up a deviation table for my boat’s compass and pretty much have it
committed to memory.) That done, I look ahead for a handy water tower, lighthouse,
cliff or cloud and head for it. If it’s a long leg, I’ll mentally adjust for wind and current.
Periodically, I check the GPS and correct the course, if needed. I find this procedure lets
me, personally, keep a straighter wake than when I steer by looking at

That treatment of technology as tools extends well beyond GPS. If you read my boat test
of the MJM Yachts 35z on page 48, you’ll discover that I laud the installation of Mercury
Marine’s Active Trim system aboard that boat. I state how the system trims the boat as well
as I can trim it manually; that I cannot beat it. In fact, I have run dozens of boats with Active
Trim and have rarely seen an instance where manually trimming the drives or outboards

Q:CURSES,
FOULED
AGAIN!
Dear Mick, my depth sounder worked well at spring launch
but deteriorated toward midseason. I suspect that my trans-
ducer is fouled with marine growth. It is a new installation
and did not receive anti-fouling paint. What can I do now? I
was not planning on hauling the boat for a few months yet.
Jack Adams

A:
Smyrna, Delaware

You can haul the boat. You can hire a diver to scrub your trans-
ducer. Or you can anchor in clear, shallow water and, using a
mask, snorkel and fins, check out the ’ducer yourself. A mask
and fins are handy tools for all boaters who keep their boats
in the water. Which choice to make will depend upon your
pocketbook and your abilities.

WITH CROSS-

Six tips for bringing your boat to the
trailer through the wind.
Crosswinds and currents have plagued
mariners since humans jumped into dugout
canoes. At least early boaters didn’t have to deal
with crosswinds at launch ramps, but today’s
trailer boaters do.
When a stiff breeze or current streams
perpendicular to the ramp, the difficulty factor
notches up considerably, especially when trying
to load a boat on a trailer. Here are six tips for
coping with crosswinds and crosscurrents at
the boat ramp. —Jim Hendricks QUICK

Six inches can often make a huge difference in many things, but we’re talking about boats
here. The new Cruisers Yachts Cantius 42 is just 6 inches longer than the former Cantius
41 (now retired) but, more important than adding half a foot, this cruiser’s debut marks
a huge rethink of how people use their boats. And I’ll give away my conclusion: Cruisers
Yachts nailed it with this new Cantius 42.
One word kept coming to mind: flow. The cockpit flows seamlessly (no step) into the
salon because the triple-wide sliding doors tuck completely away, creating an entertain-
ment zone literally from transom to helm. The cockpit has an L-shaped settee, which,

a robust build, and its self-touted “eco-friendly” moniker has merit. Further, it impressed
me with numerous small details, the likes of which make it obvious they were conceived
and executed by those with major sea time.
Conceptualized and overseen by Bob Johnstone of J/Boats fame, designed in collaboration
with naval architect Doug Zurn, and built in collaboration with Boston Boatworks, the MJM
35z’s basic laminate is created using wet pre-impregnated epoxy composite, a technique at the
heart of the boat’s mission statement. The “wet pre-preg” process uses less resin to achieve

The current UIM/APBA

Robertson said. “Rounding
