EFFECTS OF BEING A WORKING STUDENT IN ACADEMIC
PERFOMANCE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is the most powerful weapon that can change the world

But what if you are a working student? Working while studying is a common
phenomenon among students in some Universities. Most of the students nowadays
would like to help their family for the expenses on their study.

That’s why they were looking for a job—for them to have money that can help for
their studies.

So this study would like to highlight, how students handle their time on studying
and going to work.

According to pike – a researcher for England “ most of the studies have been
pretty clear and consistent in saying that working fulltime can be beneficial
particularly if its on a campus”

So This study focuses on how students --who is a working student—The

researchers aim to found out the effects of being a working student and on how
they balance their time when it comes on work , on their family, school activities,
friends and other.

Since being a common student is really difficult , the researchers felt the urge to
take a deep look and came into further studies about a working students.

In Moris Triventi’s study, he looked into the effect of working in higher education.
He found that working at low-intensity had positive effects but higher-intensity
jobs, 35 hours or more per week, tended to have negative effects. Some of the
positive effects are increased independence, ability to budget, managing a
schedule, and gaining soft skills, such as communication and problem-solving
skills. Some of the negative effects are higher risk of dropping out, delayed
graduation rates, and negative effects on academic performance. He found that
full-time workers tend to have less time for academic studies and school activities.
Non-workers average 17.0 hours of studying per week and part-time and full-time
workers study 15.7 hours a week. Full-time workers also attend class less time per
week. Part-time workers in this study were able to deal with the effects of working
while in school (Triventi, 2014).

In Rajeev Darolia’s study, there was a correlation between number of credits

completed and number of hours worked per week. This study states that 80 percent
of students work at some point in their undergraduate program and numbers of
hours worked per week increases each year. Some students take fewer credits due
to work commitments. Part-time and full-time students tend to spend less time
studying (Darolia, 2014). This can lead to delayed graduation dates and more debt
from more years of schooling. The time-to-degree ratio is higher, which in turn
costs the students less future earnings. The study points out the negative effect of
working to be lack of time for school-based activities and leisure activities, which
can help with overall health (Darolia, 2014).

These articles helped by guiding us to ask questions about how many hours the
participants work per week and how many credits they were taking. Then, we can
correlate their hours of work to their grade point average, (GPA). This is to see if
lower intensity work would aid or hinder academic performance.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the Work Study Program is to know how being a working student
affect their performance at school, and to know working students handle their time
for their family, friends and other.

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

One of the disadvantages of being a working while studying is that they are often
short on time and commonly find themselves with limited time to study, sleep,
socialize and maintain healthy eating habits. In a study conducted by one of the
main complaints among working students is that they find themselves without
enough time to eat right Instead of consuming healthy foods, such as fruit and
meats working students often grab a quick meal comprised of low quality foods
that contain sugar and high sodium. This is not to say that students should feel
discouraged and not work while in highschool or college , but instead be mindful
of the commitment and plan accordingly. For example, students who work
everyday might benefit from a 7 day food preparation technique at the beginning of
every week.
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY
This Chapter presents the methods in collecting data. This represents the research design,
research locales, and population.

RESEARCH DESIGN
This study used descriptive research to determine the Effects of Being a Working Students on
Academic Performances among selected students who studied at Colegio de San Pedro and other
schools around san pedro laguna

RESEARCH LOCALES
Structured questionnaires were distributed among selected students ofsome Universities. The
researchers used primary and secondary data to gather information in analyzing the research
study. Primary data were gained by given questionnaires to the respondents, while secondary
data were collect through internet, articles and other published materials.

POPULATION
The target population for this research defined to include the working students in Colegio de San
Pedro and some Universities since these are the working students within the researcher’s reach.
In this study,

SAMPLING
A stratified random sampling procedure was used for selecting the participants in this study. This
technique was employed to ensure a fairly equal representation of the variables for the study. The
stratification was based on private owned schools in San Vicente province of Laguna.

Table 1 shows the question that researcher’s asked to the students. It consist of 6 questions with
4(four) choices ( strongly agree, agree, dis-agree, and strongly dis- agree).
Question number 1; shows that 13 respondents answered that they’re agree, 21 answered agree, 14
answered dis-agree and only 2 answered strongly dis agree.
Question no. 2 ; shows that 17 answered strongly Agree, 27 answered agree, 6 answered dis-agree and
none answered strongly dis agree,

Question. no. 6 shows that 9 answered strongly Agree, 11 answered agree , 10 answered dis-agree, and
20 answered strongly dis- agree

Then table 2 shows the percentage of the survey that the researchers did.
On number 1;. 42% of the correspondents are agree. And 4% is the least.
Number 2; 54% of the correspondents are agree. And 0% is the least.
Number 3; 36% of the correspondents are strongly agree. And 14 % is the least.
Number 4; 42% of the correspondents are strongly agree. And 8 % is the least.
Number 5; 42% of the correspondents are strongly agree. And 6% is the least. And lastly.
Number 6; 40 % of the correspondents are strongly dis-agree.

That’s the survey chart and the total percentage of the survey being conducted.

As the researchers observed, most of the correspondents dis – agree when it comes to the negative part
of being a working student.
CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION
This research shows that it’s really hard to work while studying. Most of the working students
is lacking in sleep, being tired from work then go to school. And they don’t know how to
manage their time properly. But still, a small percentage of students says they’re okay having a
job while studying. .
In 50 students participants in this study, the researchers prove that working and non working
students have the same belief with the thought of working while studying.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Therefore the researcher recommend to those who want to work while studying, you should
manage your time first. ask yourself if you’re capable of doing things. As a working student we
need to focus on two topics or two lifestyle. The lifestyle of a worker and a lifestyle of a student
at the same time. If we just focus on one topic or lifestyle then we won’t be able to be
responsible. We need to be flexible as much as possible
