INSTRUCTION: Give 3 examples for each classification of Philippine folk dance.

According to Geography (National Dance)

1. Rigodon Originated from Spain, this dance is commonly performed at formal affairs like inaugural balls where
prominent members of the government participate and enjoy.

2. Cariñosa is a word that describes an affectionate, friendly and lovable woman. This dance is performed in flirtatious
manner with fans and handkerchiefs to assist the dancers hide-and-seek movements.

3. La Jota Manileña is a dance named after the capital city of the Philippines, Manila, where an adaptation of Castilian
Jota a floats with the clacking of bamboo castanets played by the dancers themselves. The costume and the
graceful movements of the performers noticeably inspired by Spanish Culture

According to Nature

1. War Dance – Maglalatik was originally performed in Biñan, Laguna as a mock-war dance that demonstrates a fight
between the Moros and the Christians over the prized latik or coconut meat during the Spanish rule, this dance is
also shown to pay tribute to the town’s patron saint, San Isidro Labrador.
2. Game Dance – Lubi-lubi is a Bikol dance a combination of simple folk and social steps (literally, Lubi means
coconut. A game called Lubi-Lubi is played with coconut shells). According to the Bikol this dance originated in
Leyte and Samar where it is still dance like the balitaw.
3. Festival Dance - Pandanggo is a Philippine folk dance which has become popular in the rural areas of the
Philippines. The dance evolved from Fandango, a Spanish folk dance, which arrived in the Philippines during the
Hispanic period.

According to Movements

1. Active – Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish colonial era. The dance
involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in
coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance.
2. Slow and Fast Combination - Kuratsa is highly favored by the Waray people of the Eastern Visayan region in the
Philippines. Strictly speaking, The Kuratsa must be done the amenudo; that is, only one couple dances it at a time.
the Kuratsa is however, very different in the manner of execution to the Mexican counterpart.
3. Moderate - Cariñosa (Spanish pronunciation: [kaɾiˈɲosa], meaning the loving or affectionate one) is a Philippine
dance of colonial era origin from the Maria Clara suite of Philippine folk dances, where the fan or handkerchief
plays an instrumental role as it places the couple in romance scenario.

According to Formation

1. Square – Rigodon is an elegant dance that was brought to the Philippines by the Filipinos who returned from
their travels abroad during the Spanish era. ... Traditionally, a ballroom waltz dance would follow the Rigodon.
2. Long Formation - Sakuting is a dance from the province of Abra. It was originally an all-male dance performance
presenting a mock fight between Ilocano Christians and non-Christians using sticks. The dance is traditionally
performed during Christmas at the town plaza or throughout the town, from one house to another.
3. Set - Binadyong is a lively Filipino dance that dates back to oldentribes who incorporated the dance into
ceremonies that includedprayers and rituals
