QUESTION 3 JR97Q3

3.1 Design an unregulated power supply that uses two silicon diodes, which
will deliver an average current of 200 mA to a dc motor having a
resistance of 60 ohms. The applied voltage is 220 V(RMS) at 50 Hz.
NOTE:- Show all calculations and draw the circuit diagram. Give the
appropriate minimum power ratings of the diodes and the motor used
in the circuit. Assume the voltdrop across any diode to be 0,6 V. (16)

3.2 Calculate the RMS voltage and current rating of a fuse that is placed in
the primary winding of the transformer, that would prevent the
secondary circuit from drawing more than an average current of
250mA. (4)

3.3 An oscilloscope has the following settings:timebase = 2mS/div

amplitude = 5V/div

With reference to question 3.2, draw the voltage waveforms, on the

graticules provided on figure 1 (to be handed in with your answer
script), that would be measured by an oscilloscope when connected
across:

3.3.1 the secondary winding of the transformer.

3.3.2 the dc motor.

3.3.3 one of the diodes. (9)

The oscilloscope has the following settings: timebase = 2mS/div

amplitude = 5V/div
QUESTION 2 JL95Q3

2.1
2.1.1 Design an unregulated power supply that uses a step down transformer and
two Silicon diodes.
This power supply must be able to deliver an average dc current of 18,92mA to a
load having a resistance of 1000.
The supply to the primary of the transformer is 220V (RMS) at 50Hz.

Show all calculations.

HINT:- (1) Draw the circuit diagram first.

(2) Assume the forward voltdrop of the diodes to be
0,6 volts.
(15)

2.1.2 Draw a neatly labelled diagram of the voltage output waveform that occurs
across RL, as would be displayed by an oscilloscope that has been set up
to display two full cycles.
Indicate the peak value and the time span of one cycle. (5)

2.2 Draw a simple circuit diagram that shows how an LED and a photo diode
may be used to count the number of bottles passing a point on a conveyor
belt.
Explain the operation of the circuit. (10)

QUESTION 2 N2K0Q2

2.1 Draw the circuit diagram of a full-wave bridge rectifier circuit showing
the transformer, the diode bridge and the load resistance. (4)

2.2

Assume the forward volt drop of the diodes to be 0,6 volts and negligible
reverse saturation current.
QUESTION 2 (continued)

Calculate:

2.2.1 The peak value of Vm on the secondary side. (2)

2.2.2 The peak volt drops across RL. (2)

2.2.3 The peak current flowing through diode Dl. (2)

2.2.4 The average current flowing through diode Dl. (2)

2.2.5 The RMS voltage across the entire secondary windings of the
transformer. (2)

2.2.6 The RMS value of the voltage across the primary winding of the
transformer. (3)

2.2.7 The minimum PIV rating of diode Dl. (2)

2.2.8
2.2.8.1 Draw on the answer sheet provided a labelled diagram of the voltage
waveform in the time domain as an oscilloscope would measure it, that
occurs across the load resistor R, for two complete input voltage
waveforms.

Indicate on the diagram also the time period of one cycle. (4)

2.2.8.2 Draw on the answer sheet a labelled provided labelled diagram of the
voltage waveform in the time domain as an oscilloscope would measure
it, that occurs across the diode Dl for two complete input voltage
waveforms.

QUESTION QUESTION

Wave form across Wave form across

The output voltage of a basic zener shunt regulator is 7,2 V. The load current that the
regulator can supply varies between 0 to 60 mA. A 7,2V zener diode rated at 1 W is used
in the regulator. The dc input voltage varies between 10 V and 12 V. Take the
minimum zener diode current to be 10% of the maximum zener current.

1 Draw the basic shunt voltage regulator.

2 Calculate the range of values for Rs (series resistor).
3 Determine an average value for Rs and then determine it’s power rating.
