Ethnomusicology Resources

This guide is designed to help you find information on various aspects of ethnomusicology. Consult BearCat,
Baylor Libraries' online catalog (http://bearcat.baylor.edu), for complete holdings information and availability of
materials. If you need assistance the library staff will be happy to help you.

 Where do I begin?
A good place to start would be the “Ethnomusicology” article in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians (available to Baylor constituents at www.grovemusic.com and also in print: Crouch Ref. ML100
.N48 2001). This article gives an introduction, history of the field, discussion of contemporary theoretical
issues, and detailed bibliography.

Another important resource for ethnomusicology is Nettl, Bruno and Ruth M. Stone, eds. The Garland
Encyclopedia of World Music. New York: Garland, 1998- . [Crouch Ref ML100 .G16 1998, Accompanying
recordings: Crouch Permanent Reserve CD GARLAND 2 v.x]
The encyclopedia includes the following volumes:
v.1. Africa
v.2. South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean
v.3. The United States and Canada
v.4. Southeast Asia
v.5. South Asia: The Indian Subcontinent
v.6. The Middle East
v.7. East Asia: China, Japan, and Korea
v.8. Europe
v.9. Australia and the South
v.10. The world's music: general perspectives and reference tools

 Where can I find bibliographies of ethnomusicology resources?

There is a brief but important list of annotated ethnomusicological resources in the fourth chapter of Duckles, Vincent H. and Ida
Reed. Music Reference and Research Materials: An Annotated Bibliography. 5th Ed. New York: Schirmer Books, 1997.
[Crouch Ref. ML113 .D83 1997]
This list includes general resources as well as those focusing on a specific region, people, or culture. Examples of resources in this
list include:
