4.4.1 Five-Wiper Top Plug with Plastic Insert

The five-wiper top cementing plug (Figure 4.4.1.A)
is a standard plug for Halliburton. This plug is
black and is available for 3 ½- to 20-in. casing sizes
in synthetic (oil-resistant) compounds. The plastic
insert in this plug can be drilled with either PDC
bits or roller-cone rock bits. Table 4.4.1.A provides
part numbers and dimensions of the top plug.

Five-wiper bottom cementing plugs (Figure 4.4.2.A)
are available in 5- to 20-in. casing sizes in synthetic
(oil-resistant) service. The bottom cementing plug is
red or orange to distinguish it from the top cement-

drilled out after cementing with a roller-cone rock
bit or a fixed-blade PDC bit. Table 4.4.2.A provides

The top plug was designed with standard inserts and

is black (Figure 4.7.1.A). They are molded with an
oil-resistant compound for synthetic service. The top
aluminum insert plug should be drilled out with a
roller-cone rock bit because of the large amount of
aluminum in the plug insert. PDC bits should not be
used to drill out this plug. These plugs are available in

Casing Sales Manual Cementing Plugs

4.8 Light-Duty Wooden Plugs

Wooden and plastic light-duty plugs (Figure 4.8.A)
can provide an economical method of separating
fluids from the cement and achieving easy drillout.
These plugs should be used where high-pressure
sealing and shutoff are not necessary.

Table 4.8.A provides information about top deep-

cup wooden cementing plugs, an example of which
is shown in Figure 4.8.B. These two-wiper deep
cups provide good separation of the cement and

DN002953
displacing fluid as well as adequately wiping the
casing ID. These plugs are available at an economi-
cal cost in 4 ½-in. to 20-in. casing sizes. These plugs
can be drilled out in a minimal length of time with Figure 4.8.A—Light-duty wooden plug
either roller-cone rock bits or PDC bits.
