Section 4: Candidate Declaration

4.1: Medical Conditions and Safety


I declare that:
• It is my responsibility to ensure that I am in appropriate health to take part in the course.
• If I become ill or am injured and the British Council is unable to take instructions from me
then I give permission for the British Council to inform and take instructions from my next
of kin.
• I participate in the course at my own risk. I acknowledge that the British Council accepts
no responsibility for any injury, illness; loss or damage howsoever caused other than that
arising from the negligence of British Council staff. I will report any incidents and
accidents to the British Council without delay.

4.2: Child Protection


I declare that:
• I have never been convicted of any offence involving any type of harm to a child or
children, nor have I ever been warned or cautioned in relation to such a matter
• There are no civil or criminal proceedings of any nature pending against me at the date
of this declaration relating to any allegation concerning any type of harm to a child or
children
• I will adhere to the British Council’s Child Protection Policy, Child Protection Code
of Conduct (4.1). I confirm that I have received this document at the time of signing this
application.
• I authorise the British Council to ask for criminal records information in relation to any
allegation concerning any type of harm to a child or children in other countries if
necessary. I expressly authorise the British Council to pass personal details to the
relevant authorities in countries where I have lived or worked for the purpose of
obtaining criminal records information.
• I give my permission to The British Council to check the above-mentioned criminal
records periodically.
• I understand that if I withhold any relevant information, or present false or inaccurate
information, I may render myself liable to disqualification from this programme.

4.3: Image Consent


By signing this form, I hereby
• Agree to the British Council/Premier League photographing and/or recording me and
give permission to the British Council and Premier League to use any material in the
photographs and/or recordings where the copyright or any other rights are owned by me;
• Confirm that the British Council and Premier League shall be entitled to use, free of
charge, the photographs and/or recordings made of me (without having to identify me by
name), in their original format or edited, adapted or altered, for the purposes of the
British Council’s/Premier League’s internal and external promotional and publicity
materials and for any programmes, publications, websites, electronic publications and
social media services worldwide produced by or on behalf of the British Council and
Premier League; and
• Agree that the British Council and Premier League shall be entitled to pass the
photographs and/or recordings of me, and my name, to external press and media
agencies, publishers and broadcasters, and to partners and other third parties with
which the British Council or Premier League works anywhere in the world, for the
purposes set out in this Consent Form.

The British Council will use the information you have given on this form together with other
information provided on feedback questionnaires to administer and evaluate the success of
Premier Skills. Your information will be used by the British Council and shared with the Premier
League to administer Premier Skills. Where you have provided information relating to any
sensitive and/or personal information we will only use this to ensure the equality of services
provided and your safety. By submitting this form you consent to our processing sensitive
personal data about you where this is necessary, for the purpose above.

British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries that meet
internationally accepted standards. You have the right to ask for a copy of the information we
hold on you, and the right to ask us to correct any inaccuracies in that information. If you have
concerns about how we have used your personal information, you also have the right to
complain to a privacy regulator.

Premier Skills child protection code of conduct

The Premier Skills programme believes that child protection requires everyone to take
responsibility. We recognise that the care and welfare of children is paramount and that all
children have the right to protection from all types of harm, including physical, sexual or
emotional harm, and from neglect or bullying. We acknowledge that bullying is a category of
abuse, and maintain that bullying of any kind is not acceptable.

All children and Premier Skills youth participants have a right to be protected from abuse
regardless of their age, gender, disability, culture, language, racial origin, religious beliefs or
sexual orientation.

Premier Skills recognises that we have a fundamental duty of care towards all children we
engage with, including a duty to protect them from abuse. We achieve this through compliance
with UK child protection laws and relevant laws in each of the countries we operate in, as well
as by adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) 1989.
As such, Premier Skills defines a child as anyone who has not reached their 18th birthday
(UNCRC 1989) irrespective of the age of majority in the country where a child is, or their home
country.

Premier Skills is committed to:


• Valuing, respecting and listening to children
• Ensuring all necessary background checks are made when recruiting staff
• Maintaining strong child protection systems and procedures for staff
• Training our staff and providing a common understanding of child protection issues to inform
planning and practice
• Sharing information about child protection and good practice with children and
parents/guardians
• Sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents
and children appropriately
• Providing effective management for staff through clear processes, supervision, and support
• We will provide adequate and appropriate resources to implement this policy and will ensure
it is communicated and understood.

We encourage any coach, coach educator, adult, parent/guardian, youth participant, or child
with concerns about the background or behaviour of a person involved with the Premier Skills
programme OR with concerns about the welfare or safety of a Premier Skills programme youth
participant or child to inform their Premier Skills contact at the British Council.

Inaction is not an option if you have concerns about the welfare of a child or young person. If a
child needs immediate medical treatment, you should call relevant authorities and tell them it is
child protection issue, and immediately notify your Premier Skills contact at the British Council
of the actions you have taken.

British Council child protection code of conduct

ALWAYS:
• Listen to and respect children, empower them and let them participate in planning and
delivering activities as much as possible
• Be aware of situations which may present risks for children and take appropriate actions
• As far as possible, be visible when working with children
• Consider your physical appearance. Adults working with children should dress appropriately
for the task undertaken
• Contribute to ensure a sense of accountability so that poor practice or potentially abusive
behaviour does not go unchallenged
• Report any concerns you may have about the protection or wellbeing of a child/children
to your Premier Skills contact at the British Council.
• Observe confidentiality and do not talk about any situations of actual or suspected abuse
that occurs except in accordance with this policy. This is necessary to protect the privacy
of those involved
• Consider child protection when arranging or participating in an event or trip where
children are present See Trips & Events: Child Protection Checklist
• Work to prevent and promptly address bullying among programme participants, as part
of creating a safe environment

NEVER:
• Hit or otherwise physically assault or abuse children
• Act in ways meant to shame, humiliate, belittle or degrade children
• Show differential treatment, or favour particular children to the exclusion of others
• Use language or make suggestions which are inappropriate, offensive or abusive
• Spend excessive time alone with children away from others
• Develop relationships with children which could in any way be seen as exploitative or
abusive
• Develop intimate and/or sexual relationships with children
• Pay for sexual services, of any kind, at any time, with anyone under the age of 18 years
old, even if the age of sexual consent in the country is under 18 years.
• Expose children to pornographic materials in electronic or any other form
• Permit children to take part in activities that are illegal, unsafe or abusive
• Take or condone the taking of illegal drugs or drink alcohol when working with children (or
prior to contact)
• Sleep in the same room as a child if this has not been agreed by their parent/guardian
• Invite, or allow, a Premier Skills participant into your home or transport a child alone in a car
• Enter a child’s private home unless there is a responsible adult present
• Use personal e-mail accounts, social networking sites, mobile phones or other means of
communication to contact children. Always use business e-mail accounts and copy in
parents when sending out communication to children
• Take photos of children during programme activities without prior written by the
parent/guardian
• Let allegations go unreported, including any made against you
• Agree to keep any information relating to the abuse of a child confidential. You should
always follow the procedures for reporting concerns

This is not an exhaustive or exclusive list. The principle is that you should avoid
action or behaviour which may constitute poor practice or potentially abusive
behaviour.
