DISCUSSION / QUESTIONS:

1. What similarities and differences you have observed between onion and cheek cells?
- The differences that we have observed between onion cell and cheek cell are their shape and
structure. Onion cell is a brick like cell while cheek cell has no specific shape.
2. Why do you think chloroplasts are not present in onion bulb cells?
- The chloroplasts are not present in onion bulb cells because it is places underground and cannot
absorb sunlight needed for photosynthesis, only the green leaves of the onion exposed to sunlight
have chloroplasts.
3. What part/s of the microscope you used in order to magnify the image of your specimen?
- The part of the microscope that we used to magnify the cell is the eyepiece and dise diaphragm to
focus the specimen.
4. What is the purpose of staining?
- The purpose of staining is to identify the different parts of the cell clearly because the specimens are
transparent.
5. How were you able to get your specimen in view/ focus?
- Looking through the eyepiece adjusting the mirror and the diaphragm to get the desired brightness.
- Adjust the coarse adjust knob to raise the stage until the specimen’s cell are visible
- Use the fine adjustment knob to sharpen the focus.

CONCLUSION:
1. What is your conclusion after examining the plant and animal cell?
- In examining the plant cell (onion cell) and the animal cell (cheek cell), it was hard for us to focus
the objective and adjust the light to find the two cells. But, we tried harder and we studied on how
the microscope focus on the specimen and later on, we got a perfect view of the two cells. They are
both transparent, both are easy to obtain, and they don’t have chloroplasts. The onion cell can be
peeled off from the onion while cheek cell can be scrapped off from the use of toothpick or cotton
buds. Their shape are not similar because onion cell has a brick like shape while cheek cell has no
specific shape.

REFLECTION:
1. What difficulties you encountered?
- The difficulties we have encounter is to adjust the focus and adjust the light to find the cells. Since,
we are not familiar of the different parts of the microscope, it is difficult for us to use it but, as we
continually observes and performed, we may be able to identify it and use it easier. In the plant and
animal cells, it must be placed properly with the desire angle so that it is easier to locate and clearly
see the cells.
2. What is the most challenging part?
- The most challenging part we’ve encountered is to adjust the light in diaphragm to get a clear and
better view of our specimen.
3. What learnings did you get?
- The learnings we get from this, is how to use the microscope properly, how to place the specimen,
discover the onion and cheek cells parts and structure.
