Power Train Electronic Control System

SMCS - 4800; 7610-DTN

The following components are the main parts of the power train electronic control system: "Neutral Start
Function", "STIC Steering and Transmission Control", "STIC Steering and Transmission Lock Control",
"Transmission Lockout Switch", "Parking Brake Function", "Backup Alarm Function" and "Diagnostic
Operation".

Neutral Start Function

The power train ECM will not allow the engine to be started unless the direction control switch is in the
NEUTRAL position. The operator controls this feature by placing the direction switch in the neutral position.
The operator can then turn the key start switch to the START position. After the conditions are met, the ECM
activates the start relay which allows the starting motor to turn.

Direction Control Switch.

The VIMS refers to the STIC steering and transmission lock control as "STRG/TRN LCK".

The STIC steering and transmission control is positioned at the end of the left armrest. The transmission
direction control switch (4) is a three-position switch that selects either neutral, forward, or reverse. The upshift
switch (1) makes momentary contact in order to select the next higher speed. The downshift switch (2) makes
momentary contact in order to select the next lower speed.

STIC Steering and Transmission Lock Control

When the STIC steering and transmission lock control (3) is moved to the LOCKED position, steering is
disabled and a switch is depressed. The input from the switch causes the power train ECM to shift the
transmission into neutral.

When the STIC steering and transmission lock control is moved to the UNLOCK position, the operator has
control of the steering and the transmission. The power train ECM will not shift the transmission into a speed
until the direction control switch is first moved into the NEUTRAL position.

A remote transmission lockout switch is located in the bumper on the left side of the machine. When the
transmission lockout switch (6) is in the LOCKED position, the input from the switch causes the power train
ECM to shift the transmission into neutral and the transmission lockout indicator (5) is turned on.

Note: When the transmission lockout switch is in the LOCKED position, steering remains enabled.

When the transmission lockout switch is moved to the UNLOCK position, the operator has control of the
transmission. The power train ECM will not shift the transmission into a speed until the direction control switch
is first moved into the NEUTRAL position.

Parking Brake Function

When the parking brake is disengaged, the transmission will shift normally. When the parking brake is engaged,
the transmission will not shift out of neutral to first speed forward or first speed reverse. If the transmission is in
first speed forward or in first speed reverse and the parking brake is moved to the engaged position, the

transmission will shift into neutral. If the transmission is in second speed forward or in third speed forward, the
transmission will remain engaged.

When the power train ECM shifts the transmission to neutral, the power train ECM will not shift the
transmission into a speed until the transmission direction control switch is moved to the NEUTRAL position and
returned to the previous position.

Driving Through the Parking Brake

If there is a hydraulic failure and the parking brake cannot be released, a drive-through mode is provided. The
parking brake control knob must be placed in the DISENGAGED position. The machine may be moved if the
direction switch is moved from first speed forward or first speed reverse to the NEUTRAL position and back to
the previous position. The machine should be moved only for a short distance.

Backup Alarm Function

The backup alarm is activated whenever the direction control switch is in the REVERSE position. The backup
alarm alerts personnel that the machine is moving backward. When the direction control switch is put in the
REVERSE position, the ECM activates the backup alarm relay which activates the backup alarm.

Diagnostic Operation
The power train electronic control module (ECM) detects faults that occur in most of the input circuits and the
output circuits. A fault is detected when the signal at the contact of the power train ECM is outside a valid range.
The power train ECM then records the fault. If the fault goes away, the fault information remains stored for
future reference.

The diagnostics of the power train ECM are available to assist with the troubleshooting of detected faults. A
service code is used to specify each fault. These service codes are shown in the display area of the Vital
Information Management System (VIMS). Service codes consist of three identifiers: MID, CID and FMI.

Module Identifier (MID) - The MID is a three-digit code that is shown on the display area. The MID is shown
for approximately one second before the service code that is shown in the same area. The power train ECM that
has diagnosed the fault is logged by the MID. The following examples are of some MID.

VIMS ECM ... 049

Power Train ECM ... 081
Implement ECM ... 082

Note: The MID of the power train control is 081. Make sure that the number 081 precedes the service code of
the fault when you are troubleshooting the power train system. The VIMS also shows service codes of the faults
that are not related to the power train system. MID 081 identifies the power train ECM as the source of the
service code.

Component Identifier (CID) - The components that are faulty are noted by the CID. The following components
are examples: start relay and reverse solenoid. The CID is a four digit code that is shown on the display area.
The CID and the FMI are shown together after the MID has been displayed.

Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) - The FMI tells the type of failure that has occurred. The following situations
are examples: voltage above normal, current below normal and abnormal frequency. The FMI is a two digit code
that is shown on the display area. The CID and the FMI are shown together after the MID has been displayed. A
decimal point "." precedes the FMI.

The power train ECM does not have a display area for displaying diagnostic information to service personnel.
Diagnostic information concerning the power train system is sent on the Cat Data Link to the VIMS. Service
personnel must be familiar with the VIMS in order to troubleshoot the power train system.

Service Manual, RENR6318, "Vital Information Management System (VIMS)" for diagnostic procedures that
use VIMS.

Manual module Systems Operation, "Electronic Control Module (Power Train)" for the machine that is being
serviced.

Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, RENR6306, "994F Wheel Loader Power Train".

Control Throttle Shifting

Control throttle shifting reduces the loads on the drive train during a directional shift. Control throttle shifting is
activated when there is a fault in the impeller clutch solenoid or the impeller clutch. The power train ECM will
send a message to the engine controller during a directional shift in order to reduce engine speed prior to the
shift.

When control throttle shifting is active the VIMS will display "CTS ACTIVE".

Programmable Top Gear

Programmable top gear allows the top gear for the transmission to be set. The Electronic Service Tool (ET) must
be used to set the maximum allowed top gear in the transmission.
