CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background

The advancement of information and communications technologies (ICTs)

in the past decade has had a great impact on education. Research shows that ICTs

can potentially benefit teaching and learning if used appropriately (Fadel &

Lemke, 2009; Roschelle, Pea, & Hoadley, 2000; Schacter, 1999).

Dias’s (1999) alternative view to ICT integration is that it should be used

in a seamless manner as part of the daily learning process that takes place in

classrooms. Means and Olson (1997) and Ertmer (1999) define ICT integration as

the use of technology to promote students’ learning by challenging them with

complex and authentic tasks and learning, in a collaborative environment where

ICT furnishes students with information to support their inquiry and investigation

process. The emphasis is on the learning context and ICT integration should be

analysed in the context in which it is being integrated.

Information Communications Technology (ICT) is found everywhere from

formal to informal situations because of the requirements of this century which is

highly digital. Schools which are one of the most important units of the society

should be ornamented with various technological tools, because the generation of

this century, which are ‘Digital Natives’ as PRENSKY (2001) called, learn better

via technology.

MA.DAREL HIKMAH is one of schools located in Pekanbaru. As a

formal institution, this school also provides English subject to their students. In
teaching and learning process especially in English subject, the technology is used

by the teacher. It is based on the curriculum 2013 which says that technology or

ICT is used in every subject of study. And it also becomes a media for teaching

and learning process.

Based on the description above, the writer is interested in carrying out a

research entitled: “The Students’ Perception on Using Technology in Teaching

English at Tenth Grade of MA. DAREL HIKMAH”.

B. The Problem

1. The Identification of the Problem

Based on the background of the study mentioned above, the

identification of the problem of this research are:

a) Some of teachers use textbooks in teaching English

b) Some of teachers use marker and whiteboard as media for teaching

English

c) Some of teachers read the book in teaching English

2. The Limitation of the Problem

Based on the identification of the problem above, the researcher

focuses on the students’ perception on using technology in teaching

English at Tenth Grade of MA.DAREL HIKMAH.

3. The Formulation of the Problem

The problems of this research can be formulated in the following

questions:
a) How is the students’ perception on using technology in teaching

English at tenth grade of MA.DAREL HIKMAH?

C. The Objectives and Significances of the Research

1. The Objectives of the Research

Based on the formulation of the problems, the objectives of the

research are:

a. To find out the the students’ perception on using technology in

teaching English at tenth grade of MA.DAREL HIKMAH.

2. The Significances of the Research

The significances of the research are:

a. To broaden the researcher’s knowledge about teaching English by

using technology

b. To give some input for students of MA.DAREL HIKMAH in

learning by using technology

c. To fulfill one of the requirements to finish the researcher’s

undergraduate study program (S1) at the Education and Teacher

Training Faculty of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim

Riau.

D. The Definition of the Term

There are so many terms involved in this research. The researcher, in order

to avoid the misunderstanding while reading this paper, feels that it is important to

explain the terms used in this research. The terms are defined as follows:

1. Perception
According to Pickens, perception is the process by which someone

interprets and organizes sensation to produce a meaningful experience

of the world (cited in Lindsay & Norman, 1977). It means that

perception is something that people think based on their own

experiences. In this study, perception means the way the participants

think themselves about factors which may cause them for rarely

speaking English

2. Using technology in teaching English

As the use of English has increased in popularity so has the need

for qualified teachers to instruct students in the language. It is true that

there are teachers who use ‘cutting edge’ technology, but the majority

of teachers still teach in the traditional manner. None of these

traditional manners are bad or damaging the students. In fact, till date

they are proving to be useful also. However, there are many more

opportunities for students to gain confidence practice and extend

themselves, especially for ESL students who learn the language for

more than just fun. For them to keep pace with ELT and gain more

confidence they have to stride into the world of multimedia technology.

Boles (2011) said that Technology can play a major role in the way an

English course is taught and in the way a student learns. It can foster

interaction and motivation in students in ways that a class taught

without technology simply could not.

E. The Reason for Choosing the Title

The reasons why the researcher is interested in carrying this

research are based on several considerations:

1. As far as the researcher is concerned, the title of tis research has never

been investigated yet.

2. The topic of this research is relevant to the researcher status as a

student of English Education Department of State Islamic University

of Sultan Syarif Kasim.

3. The problems of this research are interesting to investigate in term of

teaching and learning English.

4. The researcher wants to know the students’ perception on using

technology in teaching English.
