ASSIGNMENT – 2 –OM

NUCON SWITCH GEARS PVT. LTD.

Location – Ludhiana, Punjab, India


Is the company chosen for analysis with respect to studying the layout of the production plant
and modifying it for achieving efficiency in production. The business of the company is the
manufacturing of quality switchgear and exporting to USA.

Model 1 – Is the current layout of the plant, after studying it carefully, I have analyzed the
following problems-
1. The movement in the plant is in a zigzag motion, which results in a relatively longer
lead time to complete the manufacturing of 1 switchgear (3-5 days, 22hrs operation
per day).
2. Logistics Centre is clubbed with the storage resulting in excessive unnecessary
movements.
3. LC has to transport materials to all the departments of the plant and is the
indispensable part of the production layout.
4. Work in progress material before it enters the next stage i.e. in the case of steel shop
needs to be sent for storage in the LC, resulting in waste of time due to repetitive
transportation.
5. Confusion with relation to, in which stage is the material in steel and copper shop, as
they share one single continuous assembly line.
6. For steel storage, every time steel had to be sent or received from the storage
department, which resulted in excessive unnecessary movements.
7. Bottleneck in the MV/LV assembly line due to sharing of one common assembly
line.
8. Storage section of the plant is split into 2 parts resulting into confusion about which
material is kept in which section of the store.
9. Steel shop machineries is kept in a haphazard manner resulting in more time for the
product to complete this stage.
10. MV and LV assembly line face delays due to time spent for the transportation of
material from the storage to their respective assembly lines.
Model 2 – After a mindful analysis of the current layout, I have devised a relatively better
layout keeping in mind the following points - decreasing lead-time, reducing unnecessary
labor movements and cost reduction.
 The raw material in the new layout will move in a type of a spiral and not in a zigzag
haphazard manner.
 In the new plant layout, LC will be in the middle of the plant to facilitate quick and
ease in the transport of wip material.
 A new wip store can be created near the steel shop rather than sending the material
every time to LC.
 The assembly line of mv, lv, copper shop and steel shop are separated to reduce
confusion about which stage does the wip has to enter next.
 The machines in the steel shop are re-arranged. This new formation increases the
percentage of forward moves.

Difficult to get trained staff to work as they are located away from the main city
utilities is major issue as they are away from nearest police or fire station
