Message from HOD
Prof. S. Bhattacharya
It indeed gives me great satisfaction and pride to be at the helm of affair of vibrant department
with dynamic faculty colleagues, talented B.Tech and hardworking M.Tech students,
dedicated Research Scholars, and a very efficient supporting staff. The pool of alumni of our
department with their hard work and skills have given the department ample recognition
globally in only a matter of twelve years (1st Batch graduated in year 2002). After establishing
in the field of teaching and R&D, the present endeavor of the department is to increase
interaction with core and software companies in term of collaborative projects, laboratory
upgradation based on the industry standard and student involvement in training and
placement. Collaboration with foreign institutes of excellence in the field of Electronics
Engineering is also present drive of our department. In this regard, I wish to invite foreign
universities/institutes and industries as well as concerned companies to interact with the
department and give our students opportunity to show their talent and knowledge by
involving them in summer training, on and off campus placement and state of art projects.

About ISM
Background
The Indian National Congress at its XVII Session of December 1901 passed a resolution stating that “in view of the fact that
the tendency of recent legislation namely, The Indian Mines Act VII of 1901, is that all Indian mines must be kept under
supervision of mining experts, the Congress is of opinion that a government college of Mining Engineering be established
in some suitable place in India on the models of Royal School of Mines, in England, Mining Colleges of Japan and at other
places in the continent”. The McPherson Committee formed by Govt. of India, recommended the establishment of an
institution for imparting education in the fields of Mining and Geology, whose report, submitted in 1929, formed the main
basis for establishment of the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
The Indian School of Mines was formally opened on 9th December 1926, by Lord Irwin, then then Viceroy of India to address
the need for trained manpower related to mining activities in the country with disciplines of Mining and Applied Geology.
ISM Today
Situated in the heart of the country’s prime coking coal belt, 260kms from Kolkata with a campus spread over an area of
393 acres, (with 218 acres of existing campus and 175 acres under acquisition and development) the fully residential ISM
has all the facilities of world class academic institute. What started as an institution to impart mining education has
graduated into a full‐fledged technical institution of international acclaim offering a host of programmes like B.Tech.,
M.Tech., M.Sc Tech, and MBA. In addition the School offers M.Phil and full as well as part time Ph.D programmes, while
also awarding D.Sc as the highest degree of academic achievement.
The campus is a 100% residential campus with all facilities for faculty, students and staff. The school today is making foray
into the newer areas of academic endeavors in tune with changing lives. In the recent budget, Government of India
proposed the upgradation of ISM to complete IIT from the academic year 2014‐15. Currently the conversion process is in
progress and to receive it status very soon.

About Department
Department of Electronics & instrumentation was established as a supporting department in 1976. However the institute
started expanding its’ admit in other fields too and in view of that it became a full‐fledged department in 1998 and was
renamed as Department of Electronics Engineering in 2010. The department started running B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D
programs in Electronics and Communication Engineering. In July 2013, the department started a new B.Tech course on
Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering. Admission to the B.Tech course is held through IIT‐JEE, which has always
ensured the flow of best brain pool of the country and for M.Tech course through GATE. Main strength of this department
include highly qualified faculty members, whose research and teaching skills are at par with the best institutes in the world.
The department today boasts 10 state of the art laboratories including Fibre Optics, DSP, Nanoelectronics, VLSI, Microwave
& Antenna, and Embedded Systems etc.
In addition to regular academic activities, the department undertakes R&D and consultants projects. Department also
organizes various short term courses, workshops & guest lectures/one day seminars/national/International conferences
to update knowledge.
A national seminar FECIT (Frontiers in Electronics, Communication and Instrumentation technology) was organized in Nov
2011. The department has an active IEEE‐Student Chapter and a Society of Electronics Engineers (SEE) which caters to the
professional needs of the students. CONCETTO, a national level tech fest is organized every year, where students compete
with best brains in solving challenging industrial problems. The summer training/internship of the 6th semester is arranged
in various reputed organizations and institutes such as DRDO labs, ERICSSON, LG INDIA, BSNL, RELIANCE, NATIONAL
SEMICONDUCTORS, GAIL, CGCRI, CEERI, CSIO, CIMFR, BARC, OPTIWAVE PHOTONICS, IITs, IISc and various universities of
Canada, USA, UK, China, Malaysia, Australia, Ireland, etc. Students are placed for job through campus selection and some
pursue higher studies abroad including prestigious institutes such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA,
Laval University, Canada, University of Texas Arlington, USA, NTU VUS, Singapore, University of Leeds, UK. The department
of Electronics Engineering has been doing very well from its inception towards this goal. This fact was reflected in survey
conducted by EFY (Electronics for You, 2009), which crowned the department as 2nd best in Electronics Engineering
Institutes in East Zone and 8th in the Country. First International conference on Microwave and Photonics (ICMAP‐2013)
was organized on December 13‐15, 2013 and second conference on the same (ICMAP‐2015) is getting organized in
December 11‐13, 2015. Several workshops and short term courses on Optical Communication, Wireless Technologies and
Microwave Engineering are organized for better exposure to the researchers, faculties and industry professionals.
